Trip Planning » Portages Off Opeongo » 2/23/2023 12:58 pm |
Does anyone know what the condition of the portages are from Opeongo to Little Minnow/Myra/Marmot/Baldwin? Overgrown in spots/covered in blowdown, or clear and easy to follow?
My gut feeling is that they're likely all in reasonably good shape given that they're right off of Opeongo, but I'd be curious to hear from anyone who's walked any of them.
Thanks!

For me it's probably Maple Cr west of Skuce. Me/dad/brother had done a ton of trips through the park by that point, many of them quite long, and many of them through Low Maintainence portages. But that creek was something else.
Birchcliffe Cr is in second place, but we actually turned around and went back to Biggar since it was taking so much longer than expected and we realized it'd likely be well past dark when we'd get there.

EDIT: We did also spent WAY TOO LONG lost in the woods trying to take the 3,160M "bushwacker" portage into East Galipo Lake last May. It should have been a shorter day. I guess we assumed the route was along the road more, and maybe a little more obvious.... the correct GPS file would have assisted greatly. My bad... fun memory looking back.
That's a fun one. I remember the sense of relief me and GFromKitch felt when we finally saw East Galipo through the trees!

I got an email from someone a while back who visited it. They told me that the MNR removed the bolts from the bottom and tipped it over. They found remains of the cupola (i.e. the top wooden cabin) too.
With respect to the location, they indicated that the placement on my map was quite accurate.

@trippythings that seems most likely. I too found that the remainingReservableQuota field was present when I checked (yesterday).

Haha, soon! Look for a followup post in the next month or two.
We ended up putting a lot more time into design than we'd originally anticipated, but the result will be an even better map =)

Perhaps Bob might chime in, but here's a trip log he published:
You can put in/take out at Basin Depot, or at Stringers Lake, though Stringers might have some water level issues at the put-in?
It might also be possible to put in in Sligo, but I've never took any time to check since I doubt that'd be viable for more than a day trip (in terms of parking).

Oops, it looks like I made a mistake and didn't mark that as an unofficial low water portage.
The route itself is official, it's just otherwise impassible when water levels are low.
To that end, I'm not sure why the reservation system is doing that...
Trip Planning » Park Lake, Victory Lake and Snow Lake » 7/10/2019 1:24 pm |
Apologies tentsterforever, but that's incorrect.
I know for a fact that the sites on Park and Victory are in good condition (I've seen a bunch of photos of the Park L site, and have stayed at the Victory L site myself). The site on Snow (there is only one, not two like my old map shows) is, as you note, in very poor condition.
Since these sites are on crown land (i.e. not in the park), they are unsigned.
When water levels are low it is indeed challenging to get into Snow and Victory from Park L (Victory especially). The time I stayed at the Victory L site it was mid-August and we were justtt able to navigate into the lake.

I'm wondering what the portage from Luckless to Lynx is like? Is it a fairly clear/wide trail that's typically in decent enough shape? Or a poor/hard-to-follow trail in poorer shape?
My guess is the former, but I haven't been able to find out much online about it.
TIA

Hi all! Looking for an oddly obscure piece of info for the map.
Has anyone done the 395m portage across the middle of Big Porcupine Lake? I googled around and didn't find anything on it, unfortunately (presumably, most people skip it).
In particular, I'm just looking to confirm that it's a fairly clear/wide trail that's typically in decent enough shape.

Nope it won’t be ready for next weekend unfortunately
