Good stuff! I had a tree fall on a campsite on Merchant two summers ago. Not terribly close to my tent, but it could easily have killed my friend if it had fallen in a different direction.
But any tree falling you can walk away from is a good tree falling!

Thanks Barry! And I'll hopefully address the audio issues going forward.
The yoke was only ever held together with glue - wood glue to be specific. It held for ~6 years without issue so I'm not too concerned about it - and besides, I'm not sure I can pull it apart at this point anyway!
I may build a new one this winter and make that part of the yoke a single piece instead of three separate ones. That would let me sink a couple of screws into it for a more secure hold. But I just moved and haven't even found my tools yet - and I'm moving again in a month. So we'll see!

You're a machine Bo.
I've yet to make it to Lake Travers - I think it's the farthest possible access point for me. One day!

Video 3 and video 4 were released a week apart - I can't have been much faster!
<pretends there wasn't a 4 1/2 month gap between part 2 and part 3>
Glad you enjoyed it!

Yeah, you’re not going to enjoy my videos if you don’t like music in them. With that as the criteria it will certainly be too loud!

@bo: glad you enjoyed them! Lavieille has pretty much become my favourite place in the park, at least for the time being. Between it being a gorgeous lake, there being no easy way to get there and the added discouragement of Dickson being closed, it feels further away from crowds than much of the park these days. Can't wait until my next trip takes me back there, although I don't think I'll get there this coming season. Big Crow to Big Trout was a 6 hour travel day. Kayaks are fast ;). I'll see if I can track down the book - thanks for the recommendation!
@rgcmce: someone made the same comment on YouTube for the first video. While the second video was posted long before that comment, I don't see the issue with that video and paid much more attention to volume levels for parts 3 and 4. Did you see the issue with all of them, or did you never make it past the first one due to the volume level disparity?

I've stayed on that site before - it's nice and has a great beach. The only downside is that the wind is often right into your teeth there, but there's really no decent sites on the other side of the lake anyway. The site at the river mouth right near it is also very nice.

I know why you missed it Martin - you couldn't decide which tux to wear.
Just between you and me, there's a Swift Cruiser in my future. The excuse for it is so that I can take my daughter camping with me, but we'll see if it ends up becoming my solo boat too.
I haven't ordered it yet - maybe in the next year or so.

@Drew: A fourth campsite would have taken the comedy routine to a whole new level, no doubt. The Petawawa and Crow River day from Francis to Lavieille was an interesting experience. I was wet and uncomfortable most of that day, but the sun came out just as I reached Lavieille and then I had nothing but gorgeous weather to relax and recover in.
@trippy: I think I'll be happy to call 15 my one-day limit for portages ;). I wonder if you came from Clamshell all the way to Lavieille? That'd be 21. I would definitely have liked to break things up a bit more evenly - Radiant to Francis was an eyeblink, but there aren't many places to stop along the way and I'm not a fan of river campsites. Plus I was happy to be set up on Francis before the rain came in, so in that sense it worked out well.

Last summer I had the chance to do a one-way solo trip from Cedar to Canoe Lake. It was an amazing, memorable trip - great weather, some tough travel days (15 portages in one day in a sea kayak is not something I'd recommend!), and incredible campsites.
I published two videos from this trip last year, but only recently found time to finish the series. So here's all four videos of this trip - hope you enjoy them!

Welcome Austin!
Having time to relax and enjoy where you are is generally a good thing, but if this is a trip just to push yourself to see what you're capable of, I completely understand that as well. My main thought about this route is that the advantage in putting in longer days and having 5+ days of trip time is that you can get away from the lakes near the access points into places quieter and more remote. This trip is doing a big loop around the busiest area of the park so you're not really going to get that. Not sure if that's a factor or not for you, just putting it out there.
If you get bad weather or windy days you're not giving yourself a chance to catch back up if you get off script, but as you're never far from your original access point it's simple enough to abandon and head back to the car if you need to.
Potter's Creek can be a slog in low water.
Trip Planning » Radiant Lake » 1/22/2021 8:57 am |
Radiant is a lovely lake, but it has a handful of cottages on it, and there was a small motorboat tooling around when I was there, which was a huge detracting factor. I like to pretend I'm somewhere remote and that definitely spoils the illusion.
Nice enough lake, but I won't be in a hurry to head back that way.

If the world ever goes back to normal I may have to take you up on that. Two heads lost between Big George and Wabimimi are better than one.
If Algonquin isn't socially distanced enough for you, then I hope the bunker you're posting from is well stocked ;).

Thanks Uppa.....I'll do my best.. Yes, we have to meet up in person one of these years. We were suppose to meet each other on White Partridge a few years ago but the WP Express got derailed due to washouts on the road in that year. I still owe you a steak.
It wouldn't have mattered if the WP Express had made it through, I was hunkered down on Round Island waiting out two days of torrential rain followed by snow, and then escaped back to Annie Bay via a 12km logging road portage. I never made it to White Partridge either. That was a memorable trip!

I am entirely too excited to see this video. I’ve been wanting to do this route for the past couple years but never noticed the bushwhack potential until you pointed out the road. Makes the route more appealing as the two 2+ km portages getting to and out of Cedar didn’t look like fun. Looking forward to seeing how it is.
You are more than welcome to join me if you'd like to!

Thanks for the great info everyone! Drew, I think the bushwhack is going to be a go. Most likely will do this as a summer trip rather than my Spring opener though. I'll definitely be filming the bushwhack attempt!
