I like my excalibur. I have successfully dehydrated spaghetti sauce and chili using parchment paper - not very watery sauces but definately wet.

How's the Excalibur for dehydrating chili, stew, or other saucy dishes?

With the nesco, I had used additional fruit leather trays on the bottom-most racks to capture the liquids of the dishes. It worked well as these trays would end up as a leather of the sauce. Does the Excalibur have a similar arrangement that allows it to dehydrate such meals?

The unit we purchased did not come with solid racks or mats, so we had to buy a separate package of silicone dehydrator mats. Unfortunately, I haven't tried dehydrating saucy dishes yet, so I'm equally curious as to how that will turn out...

That'd definitely be a deal breaker for me to hear negative reviews on that front. The nesco was solid for a good ten years for me in that regard. The last customer service convo I had with them where I explained having replaced a Thermo resistor several times and their solution was a new power head kinda ticked me off

I am always wary of taking non-official "regulations" as gospel. The FOP text includes some interpretation of the regulations. The regulations don't mention utensils. The fact that metal foil, medicine bottles, etc are permitted is not because the regs say so, but would probably be that they aren't food or beverage containers.

You can't have a glass jar of spaghetti sauce, or a glass coke bottle.
You can't have a can of beer or a can of sardines.
You might be able to have a glass jar full of sanka (dehydrated coffee) (probably not what they were thinking)
You could have a heavy metal pouch of dried something to be reconstituted. (possibly what they were thinking)
You can have a plastic food or beverage container because they burns (though maybe they prefer you pack it out.)
You can have a metal thermal flask (intended for repeated use)
Is a paper/foil pouch for hot chocolate "burnable"?

Keeping park clean
4 (5) No person shall possess any non-burnable food or beverage containers in any part of Kawartha Highlands Signature Site Park other than containers,
(a) that are specifically designed and intended for repeated use and for which no deposit is charged; or
(b) that are specifically designed for dehydrated food.  O. Reg. 22/11, s. 2 (2).

I've stayed on #12. As mentioned it has a commanding view of McCarthy creek and the lake. It was a nice site, with a good breeze. bugs were bad that weekend, but not on the site probably due to the breeze.

I have a taron 2. From a specs perspective, other than the layout difference you mention, the taron is heavier fabric (floor and fly).

Have not seen/experienced the two in person.

The taron withstood heavy downpour  (and puddles) in killarney last year very well.

The difference with the Universal is the ability to use a canister in addition to white gas and international fuels.

The remote canister means you can run it upside down in lower temperatures, and you can use a windscreen without overheating concerns. It does simmer reasonably well with the canister.

that's a useful clarification. An additional question, based on the thread about achray being gated off.

Is there a good reference for what APs are accessible (or not) after season?
or
can I assume that an AP like Rock Lake is open so long as no snow on the ground - and would just get the permit at the east gate (from ottawa)?

sorry if this is obtuse

I have 2 ~25 year old hiking packs that are both showing their age.

The cordura on both has a vinyl/pvc/something coating that is deteriorating.

One is more of a delamination: it is browning and peeling off. This was a cheap one when i got it. The other is sticky and delaminating in spots and literally smells of excrement. This one is the old MEC Seratus brand.

I like the bags, and they are structurally sound, but the coatings failure make them unusable.

Is there some soak/wash that will eat away at the coatings and leave the cordura?

Thanks

Question - what is the latest I can reasonably expect to not be a terrible father bringing my 9 year old for a call weekend?

Circumstances mean late Oct is the  best we can hope to get a free weekend. I'd not go if the weather was going to be wet, but am I crazy to think about a call trip with my son?

Thnx

I've had good success at value village acquiring wool sweaters in multiple weights from base-layer to heavy duty. They are priced right don't have the sense that they need protecting or extra care.

For pants, you might consider worker uniform pants from Walmart. Less than $30 for the simplest dickies, they are tough, poly-cotton, and coated with something to repel some moisture.

This question has a simple answer I can't find an on the ontarioparks website.

Why can't I see availability / reserve anything using the online reservation system after Oct 8?

thanks

I agree that a rack is definitely the way I would go - for the reasons cited, etc.

Is this a long-term use item or for this trip and maybe some later use? I have a Sportrack rack from Canadian Tire (http://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/sportrack-raised-rail-roof-rack-system-0401570p.html#srp) that serves the role as required (going on 3 years with occasional summer use for canoes and winter use for ski box)

*The devices to attach to the roof rails are probably more trouble than thule or yakima (but they work and hold securely)
*I suspect they are louder than thule/yakima (but very hard to say)
*I think they are considerably cheaper

I will look more closely at thule/yak the next time to try to find quieter one, but I won't be rushing that chase

thank you. He is right at the cut-off weight (60 lbs), so he will need the larger size, but the fit of individual models will matter most.

My son (9) will need a new PFD this year. I will be visiting a paddling-focused shop to get one, but I'm wondering if there are suggestions about brands / models / features to look for.

He is getting to the size where lift handles seem to be going away. He is not a strong swimmer, so I would still prefer one with more buoyancy, and a handle. Hopefully that would let him paddle, too.

thanks
