Not sure if they are still around (haven't looked) but I bought a Rayovac headlamp at CT back in 2005 for $19, takes 3 triple A's.  It's still going strong.

Has 3 settings.  LED, red Led and normal bulb.

Last year I had a portage trip, the 13-15th.  No issues with mosquitoes and the black flies were flying around but not biting.  They still weren't out in full either.  My father and I were fine without any bug protection and my son (4) was fine with just a head net (bugs flying into his face were bothering him).

We didn't have to worry about any bugs the 14th as it rained which turned to snow and the 15th was still cool When we left so no bugs.

I'm heading up for a backpacking trip next weekend.  I may bring a headset as precaution but I'm not expecting to have to use it.

Hey everyone,

I'm thinking about added Neoprene socks to my gear collection.  I typically enjoy wandering around campsites and sitting in the canoe in barefeet but I was thinking for the portage trail neoprene socks may be a good add to the collection.

I've seen some on Amazon and of course some at stores like sail (wonder if Costco has em?).

Truth is no body I know has used them and I much prefer forum members opinions/reviews then the general Internet.

If some of you could be so kind to let me know which brands you've tried, where you bought them from, what you like/dislike about them and a rough cost I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks in advance Chris!

Water levels were good.  I'll post some videos of this route over the next week or two.  Latour could get worse if we don't get any rain

Thanks for the update Shaun!  3 weeks today I'm doing that same route with some friends.  Hopefully some wet weather at least keeps the levels at bay.  I'm not counting on it but I can always hope right?

By the way awesome video as well.  I watched both yours and Joe's this morning.

Man this recipe sounds amazing!

I have the same questions as CanoeClair.  Are the bell peppers cooked then dehydrated? or dehydrated raw?

Thanks for sharing.

Great report Ian!

I've never been to this part of the park.  I've done up a couple route ideas for it but never ended up going there.  Perhaps a trip to that area is in the near future for me maybe.

The Tim from Tim lake to Rosebary has no water issues; same goes for the Nip from Loontail creek to Ramona portage. During last 7 days there were two heavy rains in the area, so for a while it should stay in good form. In general AP is at the lowest I have seen and some portage landings can present a problem (i.e. walk in the mud).

Thanks for the info regarding the Tim Eddy!  Hope you had a great trip.

Hey Dave,

I do not use a bear proof container for my food (not that there's an issue with people who do).  I just hang my food bag between two trees and I have never had an issue and I've been on multiple trips over the years.

As for bugs, Like others have said just plan for the worst.  I haven't been in the park since May so I can't comment on current conditions.

I have never used purification tabs myself but I do use a water filter.  But if you can take advantage of that spring Swedish was talking about do it.  Nice, fresh and cold water.

Have fun on your trip!  I hope you and your step son have a blast.  I took my oldest son (4 years old) into the backcountry this past May and he still hasn't stopped talking about it.  Algonquin has its hooks into him now

One of my favorites is the site on Grassy Bay that is across from where the Petawawa comes into Grassy Bay.

Stayed their last year, nice open spot, breeze kept the bugs away and there's a big flat rock you can dry any wet gear off or have an afternoon nap.  I don't fish normally so I'm not sure if the fishing is any good but there were lots of minnows swimming around the shore.

There are multiple vantage points into different parts of grassy bay as it's a point.  I've been through there twice and have yet to see moose but I know they are in there.

Also offers the option for day trips up the Pet. Or go through white trout and venture out of big trout for further options.  On white trout just before entering the narrows to big trout there's a big field where an old farm/depot used to be.  It's marked on Jeff's map.  It's a good area to spot a variety of wildlife, well at least in my experiences.

Sure, Chris. I'm taking the Tim to Rosebary, then the Nip to Burntroot and back by the way of McIntosh creek and the Petawawa to Magnetawan. Should be very quite between Rosebary and Burntroot and very busy after that.

Awesome route!  I have not been to Burntroot or the Nip yet.  Next year a buddy and I are doing a week long trip similar to yours, we're just continuing down the nip to cedar and looping back.  Looking forward to the solitude (hopefully) on the Nip.

I was down Macintosh creek back through to Magnetawan last year with some buddies.  We lucked out, only seen people on their way out and we were on our way out seen a couple coming in.  Lots on Ralph Bice of course.

Eddy are you planning on doing a trip report after?

Ya if you could let me know Eddy that would be awesome.

I'm not going until August, and I figure I will be lining the canoe. Which I am fine with, adds to the fun .

I was just curious with the lack of rain this year what the levels were like.

Enjoy your trip Eddy! Where about's are you headed?

That I'd like to see!  I've often heard about the low water levels there so I look at the topography every time I paddle through, and I can't image what it would be like trying to line parts of it.  Actually, I can imagine - waist deep bog in a few sections.  Is it even possible?  I remember bog wading what I think was the Madawaska in the mid eighties with a buddy and our girlfriends, and all I can picture is the African Queen and leeches.

I will let you know just how fun it is if I have to do that.  Although I forsee your dipiction being very accurate though, muddy and leechy.  Hopefully I don't have to do that though.

Anyone been down the Tim River recently?  Just looking for info on water levels between Tim Lake and Rosebary.

Didn't see any low water advisories on the site but that doesn't mean their not low.

I know typically later in the season (August) their are normally low water warnings for that stretch.  I was down that stretch in May and some spots were low already.

Thanks.

I think the best short route in the park is Cedar, Catfish, Burntroot, Nip, Cedar. That route has everything. I wrote a trip log on it a few years back and would do it again in a heart beat.

Hey Martin,
I've been trying to convince my friends to do this route for our guys annual portage trip for the last two years.  Every year I do up 5 routes and we vote on them.

I've heard a lot of good things about that route/area.  A few good YouTube videos too.

Thanks for info and great pics Dave.

That beaver dam is massive!

I had planned on travelling counter-clockwise, lucky choice on my behalf.

Looking forward to doing this.  When i have a bit more time and my sons are older I wouldn't mind taking them on the bigger loop.
