I didn't recognize it, and yet I took a picture at that same spot just last Spring. The water level difference is amazing. Here's that same view on May 9th last year:

Want to post an image to keep the ball rolling in the meantime? Or I can if you prefer!

Where's he posting from? I've seen issues with captcha from countries that restrict internet access (like China) because they're blocking access to the location trying to serve up that captcha in the first place. Not sure when the captcha is kicking in for him since I've never seen one on this site, but if it's happening because of his attempted file upload (using the "Upload" link in this board) then tell him to try uploading the image elsewhere and then linking to it instead. A site like imgur.com makes that easy to do (but there are many).

Holy smokes, the trip reports just keep coming!

Bummer about the trip, but I can understand how someone can convince themselves they're fine even when they're not. I got really close to going on my September trip last year even though one of my wrists was badly messed up - the thought of not going was almost unbearable, so I kept trying to convince myself it would be okay. In an odd coincidence I was booked for basically the same loop as you. Maybe Lavieille is bad luck?

Lavieille was never shut down to my knowledge. The bloom extended into Hardy's Bay at the south end of Lavieille, but the rest of the lake was fine. I actually had a couple of nights booked on Lavieille for last September but wasn't able to go due to an injury.

Lavieille itself hasn't been closed, just Hardy's Bay at the far south end of it. But still... thinking I might plan a route through Lavieille soon, just in case!

Nice route!

Downstream is of course always preferable, but you won't encounter any significant current, aside from where the portages around rapids exist of course.

I haven't paddled Loughrin Creek but I imagine in May you'd be fine. If a route isn't passable due to water levels in May, then it's never passable.

Mink Lake is just a boring stretch of nothing, whereas Maple and Erables (and Mouse and Club!) are nice. But then you're suggesting skipping 1 km worth of portages to tack on 8+, so I guess it depends on where you're spending your nights. Certainly the route through Maple and Erables will have fewer people around and have better campsites (Mink campsites are also pretty lousy).

I'd say you've picked the right direction for the loop, yeah.

When are you going? I'll be through the Booth - Little Dickson section in mid-May so I'll be able to give you an up to date report when I get back.

1) What I've read is that they're not all that great, especially the Presto - > Marshy portage which can be flooded in places. Apparently the first 2/3rds of the 5K from Round Island to Dickson is pretty good, the last third is a lot of up and down. You will probably find it a rough day traveling from Booth to Dickson (or presumably Little Dickson) in a single day.

2) I'm booked on Little Dickson for a night. If they had concerns about the water quality there, it would be closed for bookings. I'm not worried about it.

@swedish_pimple it wouldn't surprise me if she was half blind, yep. But I was sitting on the edge of the beach next to a tree, so I might have been hard to spot. I moved only enough to move the camera.

@Steve E: Yep, it was pretty cool. Doubt I'll ever have something quite like that happen again.

@dontgroandaddy: I hear you. I once climbed into my kayak in a tiny little creek at the end of a portage only to spot a calf a few feet away on one side. Then I looked to my other side, and there was mom. I thought I was in deep trouble, but she didn't seem to care.

@Blobsquatch: I think the camera was the reason. I was looking through the lens so it wasn't really happening, or something like that. If I'd been just sitting there watching her walk up to me I'd probably have been seriously spooked, but as it was it honestly never occurred to me to be nervous.

@boredenman we're talking about backcountry sites where you don't have a reservation for a specific campsite and the rules are somewhat looser - I think everyone here has camped on a lake they weren't booked on from time to time. You wouldn't have that issue with a car camping site. Even if someone decided to poach it from you, a quick trip to the front office would get them kicked off rather quickly.

Now that being said, people do leave early from car camping sites too, and don't always check out when doing so, so the park might let someone else book your site if they think the occupants have left. Best to leave something on your site that makes it clear it's still in use, just in case!

Great read Peek - thanks for posting. The baby loon thing was awesome.

Also, just how much whiskey are you carrying with you?

I've never been able to dawdle in the mornings. Up early, boil water for oatmeal and coffee on the twig stove, then I'm packing up and moving on. I'm entirely go go go from the moment I crawl out of the tent (which is always pre-sunrise) until I'm on the water, the one exception being the morning cup of coffee. That I will take the time to enjoy, preferably sitting somewhere with a nice view of the morning sun.

This happened on my August trip last year. I was on the beach site on Merchant's Lake, sitting down by the water with my coffee and (fortunately) my camera, and this beauty just came strolling down the water's edge until she parked herself right in front of me.

I posted some of this video on an Algonquin facebook group not long after the trip, and it was also in my video trip report so it may not be new to some of you, but I thought it'd be worth posting.

My apologies that it's slightly out of focus. This particular camera has a problem with auto-focus on videos.

There are lots of good sites on Big Trout so you shouldn't have any problems finding something you like. On the east end of the lake, the far east island site is supposed to be nice (it's shown in the AA PCI index if you want pics). Last summer I stayed on the westward facing point site southwest of the island site. Nice rock to sit on and enjoy the view, deep water for diving (probably good to sit and fish from too). Only problem was finding a flat place to set up my tent. I managed, but I think it was the only reasonably flat spot anywhere on that site, so if you're bringing friends you'll want to look elsewhere!

I've stayed on five or six different sites on Big Trout, and they were all at least good, if not great.

@trippythings makes perfect sense to me, but until I unload my kayak I've got no room to collect anything ;)
