Trip Planning » Access to Sunday Lake? » 5/01/2019 7:30 pm |
Yes, it's legal to take that road to that starting point. I can't speak to its current condition, but my recollection is that it's at a fairly high elevation compared to the surrounding terrain, so I'd be hopeful it isn't washed out.
To get to it, head to the Big Pines Trail parking lot, then head up the road (unsigned) at the west end of the parking lot. From there, drive until you see the gate. There is a small parking area on the left, and a marked portage down to the lake on the right.

Really? Hmm I’m not sure why...

Haha, that's actually why I've been a bit less active in posting for the last while
Back to mapping ;)

All 20 sites on Misty still exist. Not all sites are reservable (for the exact reasons you mention).
Edit: You beat me to it Uppa

@goneagainjon - Unfortunately the Avenza Map Store license is not compatible with the license I released the map under.
Essentially the simplified version of how things were set up is: the map is copyrighted, meaning that it (basically) cannot be distributed without explicit permission. However, I added an exception such that you may re-distribute it if you agree to a specific set of terms about how and when that is permitted.
If you're interested in the specifics you'll want to read the Creative Commons license I used for details, but the jist of it is you can distribute it to others only if it's done so non-commercially, credit is given, and it's not a derivative work.
The problem is that in signing the license with Avenza you need to agree to a number of things that contravene those terms (among other things, you need to certify that ownership the maps at all times remain with you, authorize them to reformat the map and add security features to it, etc).
While I wanted to distribute the map quite openly, the restrictions I added on how it may be shared were very important in my feeling comfortable doing that. In particular, I was okay with one member of the canoeing community sharing it with another member of the community (as my way of giving back), but the moment any money or business was involved I wanted to have control on how or if that happened. I hope that makes sense
APPaul's solution is a great one though! The KMZ is compatible with a wide range of software and has coordinates embedded. I don't think Avenza maps accepts that format, but someone similar should (Google Earth for example).
FYI the new map will be available as a free jpg, on iOS/Android (in a different app), Garmin GPS's and Google Earth when the time comes =)

@trippythings - Feel free to send it to him. I can as well if you need it @John McClane
FYI the ETA on the new map is hopefully a few weeks, at least for the digital version. Just in case that affects your decision.

The plan is to have GPS and iOS/Android versions of all of them, just haven't gotten around to it quite yet.
There's always more to do than there is time, and the priority has been the new Algonquin map

Working on it as we speak :D
Yea, as Paddlerunner mentioned we've been aiming for end of April or early May. Will probably be early May.
But the good news is that we're almost done! Just putting the finishing touches on it at this point

Hello there fellow AA'ers! I know most of us are very familiar with Jeff's maps. The Algonquin map shows almost all lakes with the fish that inhabit them. My question is? Why doesn't Temagami? Algonquin and Killarney do. Does anyone know of or where I can find this info? Maps or a link? Not looking for honey holes just what fish species are present there. Any info would be greatly appreciated,
Splakin
Good question!
It's very difficult to get fishing info, but it's extremely hard to get accurate fishing info.
Speaking about Fish Online specifically, it's better than it used to be, it's still full of mistakes (this is second hand, but I heard that when it launched, it was internally considered an embarrassment).
In Algonquin I've been lucky enough to have met people who know a lot more than I do, who I trust, and who were gracious enough to share their knowledge (in particular, Greg Betteridge and Stephen Molson, both of whom did fisheries research in the park). Killarney is a special situation where I was able to piece together accurate information from all of the scientific reports that have been written about the park.
It's important to me that my maps are as accurate as possible, and I'd rather not include a feature if I don't feel I can do a good enough job. That was the situation with the Temagami map.
@Catto9 - Out of curiosity, what other species do you want to know about? How does the fact that a lake is stocked impact where you might want to go? I've considered adding an indicator for stocked lakes before, but it's been suggested to me that the fact a lake is stocked has little correlation with fishing quality (e.g. Ouse Lake is stocked but when the fisheries unit measured returns from that lake, they were practically nil)

Haha!
Yea, someone sent me photos of that a few months back so it's fixed on the new map

Thanks Clarkey71! That's great to know
Re: A Spare Campsite - I can guarantee you that's not why that site doesn't appear on the map. There are a ton of lakes where the park leaves 1 or more sites free for that reason, but all of the sites appear on the map. This is presumably a recent change that isn't yet reflected on the map (or there was a breakdown in communication internally - also possible).

Awesome! Thanks Barry and Martin =)
@UpTheCreek - Woohoo, that's really handy =D
Would it be possible to get any other GPS data from you by chance?
Trip Reports » Missing, un-mapped and un-reservable campsites? » 12/22/2018 4:24 am |
@Gord, does this look right?
@UpTheCreek - Thanks, someone mentioned that one to me a little while ago and I was looking for verification that it did indeed exist, so thanks! Does this look correct?
@Barry - That site was added between 2014 (when the last version of my map was published) and now. It appears on the MNR's map.
