Trip Reports » Kiosk Lake Feb 13-16 » 2/17/2022 4:53 pm |
Every time I see a winter trip report I think "okay, it's time to get into winter camping!".
... and then I don't get into winter camping. Thanks for the writeup and the great pictures!

I've used a few hacksaw type saws over the years (I have not tried the Boreal21, of which I have heard good things), but eventually switched to a Silky Pocketboy 170. It's smaller and lighter and definitely gets the job done for anything I want to cut.

Yeah, that's why I mentioned I'll have to do fewer trips and make them longer in order to justify the distance. As much as I love Algonquin, its main feature to me is convenience - I can get there in a few hours and start my trip. But if I have to drive 10-12 hours to pay a quarter of what I would to go camping in Algonquin, I'll likely be driving 10-12 hours.

Even though the chances of getting caught are slim, I'm in Algonquin to relax, not stress about getting caught. I'll probably have to say goodbye to Algonquin (for the most part) when this goes into effect and plan longer trips to farther away, less absurdly priced locations. La Verendrye in Quebec maybe?
Trip Planning » Ice out reso's are stacking up » 2/11/2022 12:41 pm |
They won't let you book before May 13th... now. But they will open reservations for earlier dates if and when they've declared ice out. Their usual routine is when it seems likely things are clear, they schedule a flyover. If the flyover confirms ice-out then they'll declare an opening date for interior camping to begin, and then reservations are open from that date onwards.
From previous years I seem to recall that they have a thing for opening camping on a Friday, and the flyover is usually a day or two prior.

Both lakes are open to camping again. Dickson reopened last June, not sure when Ryan was reopened. If they're closed for fishing I saw no notices of that posted anywhere when I passed through them last July.

They also have a thing for opening reservations on the Thursday for trips starting on Friday (if I'm remembering correctly, which maybe I'm not). They won't open reservations when "we can see ice out coming", they'll open reservations when they've confirmed ice-out with a flyover and declared an opening date.
Before that they ended up having to contact hundreds of people to change their bookings - and then maybe do it again - and again, and they finally just threw in the towel on that approach. Before *that* they used to just trust people to make up their own minds about whether or not to go camping in the current conditions instead of deciding that on our behalf. I know there are some campers who are still pretty salty about being 'nannied' to the current extent by the park administration.

May run into you on your late July trip. If you see a kayak, odds are it’s me so say hi!
