First they picked Opeongo away from Opeongo Outfitters, then they saved the Brent store, then got the LoTR Store, now the P-Store (I hope they keep the name).
Here's some Algonquin history for you. The P-store actually held the opeongo store concession before AO did; and while I can't confirm....I'm certain the Ope concession was awarded to AO in part to prevent the P-store from having a monopoly....and yet here we are.
The Ope store was managed by Erik Saltmanis on behalf of the Miglins and his nickname was salty which led to plenty of confusion when Swifty from AO took over.

Absolutely not. Section 8 of the charter protects us against unlawful search and seizure. The powers of search and seizure granted by section 487 of the criminal code are subject to reasonable grounds to believe and unless the warden had found an egregious offender worthy of search they would be wise to never force the issue as they would almost certainly lose a court case where evidence was gathered as a result of any search and then lose the authority all together.
This is a high standard. Akin to catching the person in the act. Arriving to check in for a permit at Algonquin provides 0 grounds to even suspect a person of wrongdoing let along a belief they will commit wrong doing.

What a great idea for an extension on the 3rd loop. Have you ever submitted it to the park as feedback for the future? With the rapidly growing popularity of backpacking I would think they should be considering something like that. With a birdseye view you could hike all the way down to rainbow lake on the old rail line. I’m sure ground level it’s not quite so easy but what an amazing extension that could be.

The other site on panther lake is nicer. Neither of them are great though. Panther used to just have a single site when they first opened it up. A couple of friends and I were among the first to ever use it as part of a backpacking trip many years ago. I remember checking in and the guy printing the permit at the west gate was so confused as he didn’t even know it was for backpacking. The canoe route map at the time showed it as a portage trail still.
Anyway, great hike. It’s too bad they closed that section that used to go to loft lake. Not sure if you would have chosen that instead but it was always nice to have more choice. So strange they would not look to reopen that section given how busy the trail has been since 2020. I guess they figure people will lose interest as international travel opens up again.
Thanks for sharing, love reading about the backpacking trips, there aren’t a lot of hikers on here.
Oh, and impressive last day. That would have been tough for sure.

You’ll start seeing picnic tables on all the sites pretty soon.

No question that I have used and kind of appreciated the odd well crafted table or log seat but if I had to pick it would be leave no trace 100%. And I'm hoping there is a special place in the underworld for anyone dropping cig butts anywhere anytime but most particularly in the wilderness.

I haven’t been there in many years. I’m sure the spring is still behind the cabin for a cold drink but I would love some info on the trail too as I may end up there this summer.

The impetus behind site specific booking and issuing permits base on campsites instead of individuals is not based on some sort of assessment of who uses the APP interior. It has been described by Ontario Parks as a way to align car camping and interior camping policies and procedures. It is an administrative change spurred on by an overarching initiative by the Provincial Government. It is not a change in response to user requests.
It would be nice if APP saw this looming and then tried to take this opportunity to realign their offerings, but I doubt it. Administrative changes like this are spurred on by the need to control costs and revenue. Could you imagine how expensive (and futile) it would be to bring all of the thousands of APP interior campsites up to an improved standard?
Totally seperate of this initiative, and governed by a different mandate, APP may very well come out with a teired system of campsites to specifically address Accessibility to Ontarians with Disabilities (AODA). I foresee the park creating new campsites or re-developing existing campsites on lakes like Cannisbay or Opeongo to ensure that APP and Ontario Parks complies with the AODA Act.
But this has nothing to do with the seperate requirement to change towards campsite bookings. Jon is transparently conflating his need to control outcomes with the admirable goal to provide opportunities. I believe this is a misguided and dangerous approach specifically as it applies to canoe tripping in a park as large as APP.…
Respectfully my friend MartinG, I'm not sure I accept that APP is doing this to harmonize car camping and backcountry camping...is there evidence of this? Nor do I accept that it is primarily a money grab (although I'm not against investing in our Parks). I have tripped in Killarney and the French River most recently - places that have moved to site specific and "tighter area-specific" reservations respectively...makes it muc

No one wants to see prices go up and I’ll be the first with pitch fork in hand if they really Jack the rates up and I can COMPLETELY understand why solo and double paddlers would be livid at the thought of a change to per site fees as opposed to per person and I would definitely have my torch out to storm the gates against that.
But does it really matter if you camp on the east end of the lake versus the west end? It’s not like we were allowed to camp Willy nilly up to now (since the 80’s anyway). If you can’t get to your specific lake now due to whatever circumstances, you setup on a portage or an open campsite. If it’s site specific and you can’t get to your specific site due to whatever circumstance, you setup on a portage or an open campsite. The spontaneous roaming of Algonquin has been gone for a long time. I recall in the 80’s they had a regional permit system (am I dreaming that?) where you had choice of 3-4 lakes to spend your night on and that evolved to the current system of a specific lake, largely due to the number of people ending up paddling around a full lake while the next lake over was empty. This possible change is almost assuredly due to people complaining of circling a large lake looking for the 1 empty site late at night.
Yes I’m sure there is also profitability involved but my experience is the lakes are jammed and have been getting ever more jammed every year and OP has to do something to try and create the best experience for the largest number of users. People camp off site now, and will continue to due so in the future. This does nothing to address that. If arriving at big crow lake and getting to choose a campsite on that lake is important to you I guess we see things differently. I would rather show up at big crow lake and paddle directly to the site I’ve already chosen. This doesn’t distract from my experience of paddling many hours to reach that lake.

The people who can afford this without a second thought to the cost aren’t likely to be interested. The person that would want this, isn’t likely willing to pay for it with the incredible public parks we all have access to.

I doubt that will be popular, and I sure wish I was rich to put that to the test. If this place is nice(based on location it probably great) and money were no object I think most of us would join.
Kanye west just decided he doesn’t feel like performing at coachella in a few weeks. 1 day of “work” for $8 million dollars….and he doesn’t feel like it. There is a different group of people out there.

Pukaskwa?
Do a full gear dump. Ruthless weight cutting will be your friend.
Your big 4 (tent, sleeping bag, sleep pad, pack) should be a max of 10 pounds.
Hit some local trails of at least a few hours hike with a weighted pack.
