Trip Planning » Ice Out vs. Black Flies » 3/08/2016 1:30 pm |
From what I've read, the earliest Black Flies can really become noticeable is the last week of May. Am I mistaking?
We planned a trip starting on May 6th but it looks like we'll have an early ice out. Will we be swarmed by black flies?

I was also given one for Christmas by a friend! Looking forward to trying it out.
It might just be me but I'm pretty sure I can taste the purifying water tabs when I use them.
Trip Planning » Baby Joe Campsite » 3/02/2016 1:16 pm |
Hi JB, Thanks for the info!
We'd be going early season so camp won't be in. Because of the timing for this trip, we chose this area of the park since we've never been. Otherwise we'd stay away from the crowds as much as possible.
Either Baby Joe or Burnt Island it is. We'd want to stay at Baby Joe on the last night to have a shorter trip home the next morning.
Thanks again!

Does anyone have any information on the lone campsite on Baby Joe Lake?
Thank you!
Trip Planning » Planning Canoe Lake to Sunbeam - Early May » 1/23/2016 12:39 am |
Thank you very much for all the input. It's all very useful information
We're going to sit down and talk about in the next couple of days. Probably opt for a longer version of this trip and we will take the currents into consideration. Any other currents in that are I should be aware of? Thanks!
Trip Planning » Planning Canoe Lake to Sunbeam - Early May » 1/22/2016 12:28 pm |
Hey everyone,
Early May I'm planning a trip to the normally very busy area north of Canoe Lake. I've never explored this area before so I'm excited to check it out. I'd love to here suggestions regarding what route to take, campsites and anything in particular we should check out. We are planning on doing 4 nights and are not looking for particularly long or intense travel days this time around (although if it comes down to it, we will have smiles on our faces all day either way).
Here is what we currently have in mind - totally open to changing it up based on your suggestions and experiences.
Day 1 - Canoe Lake to Baby Joe
Day 2 - Baby Joe to Sunbeam (Via Vanishing Pond or Burnt Island - not sure yet)
Day 3 - Nature & Chill Day
Day 4 - Sunbeam to Either just North or just South of Tepee Lake (Via Aster Pond)
Day 5 - Back Home
Thanks you for any input and advice you may have!!
Matt
Where In Algonquin? » Marker Tree in Algonquin? » 1/16/2016 7:24 pm |
Trail trees or trail marker trees are hardwood trees throughout North America that Native Americans intentionally shaped with distinctive characteristics that convey that the tree was shaped by human activity rather than deformed by nature or disease.[1] A massive network of constructed pre-Columbian roads and trails has been well documented across the Americas, and in many places remnants can still be found of trails used by hunters and gatherers. One unique characteristic of the trail marker tree is a horizontal bend several feet off the ground, which makes it visible at greater distances, even in snow. Even today, modern hunters look for horizontal shapes while hunting deer, elk and moose.

Hey!!
I came across this tree that looks like it could be a trail tree or marker tree. I haven't heard of any in Algonquin Park but I figured it could make a lot of sense. If my memory serves me right, I THINK this was at the entrance of the portage from Head Creek into Cache Lake, or perhaps the second to last portage along Head Creek.
Here is a photo:
What do you guys think?

Wow thanks for all the information - helped a lot in my decision making. In the end (yesterday), I purchased the Wanderer 2 and here's why.
Although it is somewhat heavy for a 3 person tent, I ALWAYS split our tent into 2 separate packs which for me, made the weight acceptable (I don't really do any hiking trips). The reason I didn't go with the Volt 3 is because they did not have anymore of the standard Volt - only the the Volt 3 A/C. I camp on the edge of the St Laurence River where it can get quite windy so I wanted a tent that had more wind protection. I was kind of stuck on the Lightfield 2, but as I don't do any 4th season camping, I convinced myself it would be overkill. I stayed away from the MSR tent because although the ultralight set up was very appealing, the person who helped me at MEC mentioned that if I was to be facing a decent amount of wind, the MEC set up would withstand/protect better. I loved the larger than standard size of the Wanderer 2 and to top it off, (not sure if it was a pricing mistake), the Wanderer 2 in store wast at $289.00 - I had to bring the MEC cashier to the tent section where the price was posted because on her computer, and on the website it was priced at $349.
I really do appreciate everyone's feedback. Thank you!!

Hey! Hope everyone is enjoying the winter so far!
I'm looking at purchasing a new tent but am having a lot of trouble picking the right one. I received a gift certificate to MEC, so I am planning on buying it there. I camp 4 to 5 times a year, mainly Canoe Camping in Algonquin with a decent amount of portaging (Always do 1 carry). I also camp on the edge of the Fleuve St-Laurent near Tadoussac every year (so it can get pretty windy - cold windy). I'm looking for a tent that can comfortably fit 2 people. I camp starting at the end of April and have a last trip in mid October. I was set on the MEC Lightfield 2 Tent but after some research I realized it might not have great ventilation for the summer months. Here are the tents I am looking at in my budget. I'd love to hear everyone and anyone's thoughts/experiences. Thank you very much!

Heading up to APP from Montreal tomorrow night/morning for the last camping trip of the season!
Anybody else heading into the park? We're doing a small loop starting at Smoke, down to Bonnechere Lake, Up to Head, to the Madawaska making our way back to Smoke. Looks like we might be in for some mixed weather - always an adventure when we go to Algonquin!
