Trip Planning » How are the bugs? » 7/06/2020 1:04 pm |
Just came out yesterday. Bugs were quite unfriendly on portages, but virtually nonexistent on any of my campsites other than the deerflies. I was wearing a bug jacket while travelling.
I was up and moving very early though - the bugs likely wouldn't have been as bad if I had been portaging at 1 PM instead of 6 AM!
Trip Planning » Tim and Pet water levels July 2020 » 7/06/2020 12:20 pm |
Just got home from a trip that took me down the Tim to Shippagew (starting from the portage to the Tim from Little Trout) and then up the Petawawa from Misty to Daisy.
The Tim was fine, no problems, no noticeable shallow sections. The Petawawa was quite shallow between the 135m and 450m portages - I didn't have to drag, but it was quite slow through that section. No dragging anywhere though. Another couple weeks of no rain and you may be walking that whole stretch though!

I think the answer is that they won't be, at least not for this year. Although the online booking system does now let us provide license plate numbers (and tent and boat colours) so maybe they're checking plates against a list.

I'm trying to figure this out myself! I just got home from 5 days through the Magnetawan access point. I thought it was still 'print your own', but when I reached the access point everyone had the official, permit-office-printed, permits in their car windshields. Someone was at the access point and confirmed the Kearney permit office was open.
So I went camping anyway and left a printed-out copy of my permit in the window. Used my inReach to message my wife and had her call the permit office to let them know I was camping and didn't realize they were open. All they told my wife was "He's fine", so I'm not sure what the official position is right now.
Trip Planning » Questions from a first timer, reservations, safety, » 7/06/2020 7:59 am |
1. If you're leaving Tuesday then you wouldn't have to make a booking for Tuesday. The Monday booking covers Monday night, and you'd be heading out on Tuesday.
2. I bring burgers for the first night, which ride up in a cooler that never leaves the car, it's just to keep them cold as long as possible. I know plenty of people who bring frozen food in for the first two nights. With a bit of care in wrapping and storing it to stay cold, it's not much of a stretch for food to last that long in the summer. Beyond that you're probably into cooler territory. I don't imagine many people here ever take in a cooler, but I've certainly seen people do so. A very small cooler like those zip-up ones might be reasonably practical as you could hang that without too much trouble.
3. I doubt it's going to matter to your kids, but Crotch Lake has a power line that runs through it, which for me is a turnoff. Can't comment on the campsites on either lake, sorry!
Trip Planning » How bad does the Crow River get below Big Crow (Water Levels)? » 7/06/2020 4:08 am |
I've got a trip coming up in a couple of weeks that has me headed up the Crow River from Lavieille to Big Crow. 2-3 years ago I did this same stretch in the opposite direction in mid-July, and remember having a fair number of times I had to get out and drag. Once beyond the 1220m portage water levels were fine, it was the section right near Big Crow that was the issue.
This year I think water levels are quite low overall. Should I be concerned I might be walking the entire upper part of the Crow River?
Trip Reports » Covid-Out: Canoe to McIntosh » 6/30/2020 8:51 am |
It was about 9:30 I think, so I may have beaten the Friday crowds. I passed one couple on Canoe Lake, but otherwise yeah, it was empty. There were certainly a lot more cars in the parking lot when I came out than when I headed in.
I was home in time for brunch!

You know what they say: Happy husband, happy... no wait, that's not the saying. But my wife understands my obsession with Algonquin, and is always supportive when I'm planning a trip.
I'll be in the midst of a 10-day solo on our anniversary ;).

I didn’t notice any garbage, so it may have been cleaned up. Or I was just oblivious, which is also possible! It’s clearly a well used site - finding firewood took me a while.
Trip Planning » A way to find available number of campsites with the new system! » 6/28/2020 5:04 pm |
Awesome. Now we just need someone to build a browser plugin that will surface this information right on the page without needing to use the developer tools. I work for a software company but am sadly not a coder myself - but I might see if I can talk someone into a side project!

Well it wasn't an ice-out trip, so I'm calling it Covid-out. No? It'll grow on you.
This was a quick two-nighter into McIntosh a few days after the interior opened. I was hoping for few bugs but expected the bugocalypse, and took a Eureka NoBugZone in with me as a result. As it turned out I barely used it - my site on McIntosh was virtually bug-free, and I had a peaceful and relaxing time. New kayak, new camera, and yet no problems to report - even the Tom Thomson/Ink portage felt easy.
Hope you enjoy it!

It's also seriously tone deaf in the present circumstances. Good job Ontario Parks, encourage people from different households to share an enclosed space for hours in order to save on parking fees!

On a nice day, no problem. If you get a windy day for your paddle out then it's going to be quite the slog.

I'm sorry to hear that, but when a door closes, a window opens! I'm sure you'll have an awesome trip at BWCAW.

"Inundated" is meant in the relative sense of course - it's still the back country. Popular lakes near access points will likely be booked up or nearly so (Ralph Bice, anything off Canoe Lake, Booth etc), but there will be plenty of options and availability further in.
