I have been going to Ahmek district for years, it gets much nicer and quieter once you get passed drummer (altho no more lean-to's), as dummer has begun to get busy these days beleive it or not. I was looking for that same paddle this summer and went way past drummer, all the way out to E.U lake from there looking for it along portages. Damn passed it on Drummer!! Hahah

I did it this year in the first week of July, I think it was approximately 5-6 hours from Big Bob to Highview. Two things to keep in mind:

1: We were going as fast as we could
2: The weather was insanely hot and it was insanely buggy which slowed us down, and we were on day 4 of an ass kicker trip that also slowed us down

Long story short, totally do-able in one standard day without killing yourself, just some swearing in the Alders

I have tried cooking trout every way possible and yes, French cuisine has a classic boiled trout recipe called Au Bleu. Google that and give it a try, basically you first make vegetable broth then poach fresh trout with skin on in it.

Hey Barry, I work in Ecology in the Algonquin Region. Fortunately I live near the Western Uplands side of the park so I would like to go visit this location. I am more than certain it would be the first record of Northern Catalpa in Algonquin Park. Will it be easy to find? I am wondering if it is still there.

Blueberries just recently came out around here, seem to be having an average year too. As for mew lake airfield, I would avoid that area for blueberry picking. Due to social media and how busy Mew lake campground is, it has become a battle between those who think all the berries need to be left to bears, vs people who understand a little recreational picking wont hurt anything. I've heard recently by Park staff friends that they get calls of people reporting eachother picking blueberries and what have you.

Otherwise, Low-sweet blueberry shrubs can be found on nearly any rocky exposed area in algonquin park, with the other spieces, Leatherleaf Blueberry occurring around the periphery of lake and wetland. Faya lake most likely has its own bluebery stash.

I really hope that they abolish the "too far" thing all together, save for perhaps just a warning in case one is unaware. I cant tell you how many times I have been forced to book permits for the lake i am not heading to because they literally wont give us the correct ones.

It is an option, sometimes a pain to deal with. I live on the road that leads to Hollow River / Dividing lake access for algonquin park, meaning 15 mins I could drive to the parking lot access. However to get permits, I would techincally have to drive all the way to Canoe lake permit office like an hour in the wrong direction. Over the years of calling and pleading my case to the East Gate office, they quite often issue me a permit and get me to write a # down for the dash and to carry with. Just a thought.

I do love it out there. We used to call it "Ahmek district" when I lived on Canoe lake, because other than us, the only folks you'd see out there were boys and girls from Ahmek / Wapomeo kids camps. Long portages that dont get used a lot.

I have been to every single one of the lakes out there, most of them many times and have done all the portages. If you have any specific questions feel free to ask.

There are a few portages which need special attention, like getting in to E.U, or from E.U - Oak - Mossy. Also, West Harry - Mossy - Panther has to be one of the steepest sections in the entire park, despite not having a catchy name like "Devils staircase". Even going downhill is rough on your damn knees as it is steep as a mother. Id call it "Hell's Cliffside Traverse". Going from West Harry - Mcraney sucks, as you can tell it would. The Remona - Dace section is also very steep, with it being uphill from Dace - Remona. Nobody should ever stay on Tonakela, it is a swamp, not a lake, despite what the park says. I wouldnt even want to drink its water filtered.

However, what you will find is solace. With the exception of crossings with the Western Uplands Backpacking trail.

It's been a few years but if the portages were bad they paled in comparison to the bushwack up to Band L. from Boot.  That was no fun at all.

My plan that day was to make the bushwack from Boot to Band just didnt expect to hafta bushwack the whole way to boot hahah.

From my background review, Band looks "worth" the bushwack

I think the portage from Raja to Muskrat is marked on the wrong shore on the map. Look on the south side of the creek.

I was wondering that, I searched everywhere on the north and only half assed on the south, figure i mighta missed it. The creek is passable there but takes forever because of logs.

Oh actually I was referring to the ability to paddle-in to camp without having the need to portage.

If I were to really want to drive right to camp and still ahve nobody around I go up my road that dwindles into crown land and therse plenty of lakes any decent 4x4 can get to that nobody seems to care for.

I live near access pt 14 for Dividing Lake but there are options all around the park.

I usually plan a group camp for a group of former park staff every year and try and make it drive-to. Nice thing about Oct - Nov is nobody is around. Lake Travers was where we went last time which is great. Some Walleye in there too.

The best time of year to catch trout in numbers, besides the May blackfly hatch, is peak summer when its hot. On medium - small lakes they are all piled into one location and are super easy to predict. There are a few ways to achieve accessing them and the one I use ive been doing for around 10 years after inheriting the rig from a grandfather. Id like to say more but I feel like the trout population benefits greatly from the fact that most people mistakenly think dead-summer heat is a bad time. I do think this method is hard on the trout so even catch and release should be done so in a limited fashion on small lakes especially.

Here is the old man with a deep-lined lake trout
