I over heard some ladies chatting one day about Algonquin Park hiking and they said there was a water fall that you could swim in?? I think it was on the East side. Does anyone know about this? Hoping to take my son there for a night or two of backpacking.

Does anyone use a gps watch?? I have researched them and don't know if I truly need a GPS watch, I like the idea of the compass and Barometer built in. I used my cell phone the last time I was backpacking but the battery doesn't last long enough. Thanks!!!!

I am renting backpacking gear. I pick up next week. So far, it's been a great experience. The food menu was amazing, service amazing. They let you use their tent areas overnight before pick up if needed and give you free continental breakfast the morning you leave.
I called a different outfitter for another area and the owner was very rude and pretty much made fun of me. So that sealed the deal with Algonquin.

I am just curious, how do we pick a site? I am confirmed to go EU Lake and Maggie Lake West. My confirmation has numbers on it, 640 and 636. Are these camp sites that I will stay at or do I just choose an area once I am at the Lake? Also, do all sites have access to the Lake to cool off? Do they all have leeches lol. I don't do well with leeches.

Great post! Odd to hear about the bugs as you see pictures posted on the Algonquin fb page and people are in t shirts and shorts, hiking through trails. Perhaps certain areas get it worse? I am not sure what lake it is on but heard there is a beautiful waterfall?

Has anyone used the gps watches? I am looking at the Suunto. I like that it can map where you are and you can upload to digital version and see altitudes, etc. I am looking at the Ramblr app that can track, use photos, etc to log your journey. But I agree, having it with me will be a bit distracting especially when I am trying to get away from it.

Thanks Everyone! I took everyone's advice. EU lake first then Maggie's Lake West. I hope West is marked? then 3rd day will be out. Excited for this trip and nervous Hope to see some of you on the trail!! If you see the lost looking gal, that would be me

I am booked!! Yay! One week and I will be in.
Backpack booked with Algonquin Outfitters. Am told they take care of everything, including food. I have one dilemma. Tea -- I have to drink my tea but I need a splash of milk. What does everyone use?

Ok.
So I am renting all gear. I am going in for 2 nights. Water... I take from lake and purify? It really works lol
I'm figuring I will use camp stove and not build a fire yet.
That can wait til second trip.
I'm most worried about water
I think it's odd that we have these straws that purify water.
Oh and bugs.. I have the nets for hat and body.
How do I keep them out of tent?

Thank you all for great advice. I am new, like first time new to everything. Camping to me has been in my 24ft travel trailer. However, much "crap" has happened this year and I am "screaming" on the inside for solitude. At the same time, I want to push my body to a point of where it cannot go any further. Almost a "hike the demons" out of my head. I have looked at Kilareny however, it is 7 hours away from me and I am debating the drive as I only have the 2 nights.
Adirondack might be another solution.
Or if anyone has an Algonquin area that can push me to my limits, I am all ears!

I am looking to hike/backpack this summer. I found a pair of hiking shoes that were comfortable but they were not waterproof. Is this a big deal?
