Equipment » Different way to transport kayaks » 8/02/2023 1:32 pm

Afternoon ... I recently got a new car and my roof rack doesn't fit.  I was wondering if there are viable options to roof racks to carry 2 kayaks?  New roof racks are really expensive and I'm only planning on going within an hour of home.

Thanks ... .

Trip Planning » Moose Hunting » 8/14/2021 8:03 am

I'll be in the east gate area for a few days next week.  I'd love to do an evening paddle in an area that might have moose feeding.  I know our lake it's unlikely.  Any suggestions in that area would be appreciated.  I'm wondering about McNanus lake perhaps ...

Thanks

Trip Planning » Mcmanus lake questions .. and high falls .. » 8/09/2021 7:43 pm

I had a question about McManus lake campsites 1, 2, 3, 4 ... (as per the PCI map on this site)

Would anyone know if any have decent swimming in front of the site ?  Sandy bottom ?  In addition all the sites look like a short paddle from the put in ... I have a novice paddler in a kayak coming along so I cant paddle too far.  Is it safe to say that those sites would be a short paddle ... very little current (I know its technically a lake but its also part of the river)... ?

One last question ...  .. for the High Falls slide ... I assume theres no issue this time of year with low water ?

Thanks

yeah we go to the rideau prov park near us and just walk in.  Not a lot of people there so far though,  They told me its going to like that until park closing in the fall.

You know its a small thing but good on the province for doing this ... we went every night last week and it made a big diff to our moods ... (dad is not as cranky !)

now if i could jsut get the kids to stop splashing me until I'm "ducked"  ...

Trip Planning » Almost there » 6/09/2021 10:39 am

I went to a local provincial park and went for a dip yesterday ... not algonquin but it was really nice to be in the water.  The smell of burning charcoal and hot dogs didn't hurt either ...

(and it was free)

I'm reading some good things online about all the recommendation you have all made ...  many thanks ..

Trip Planning » Almost there » 6/08/2021 8:24 am

I haven't booked anything yet .. traditionally I go during the week and so I've never had trouble getting sites so I book closer to leaving .. but for those that are booking more recently, is it also booked up a lot mid week?

If the answer is yes then that's a big miscalculation on my part ..

Trip Planning » Best Solo Canoe » 6/07/2021 10:34 am

I will be looking to rent a canoe or kayak for a solo paddle or two this year.  I've mainly done  kayak or canoe with a partner.  Note .. I like stability .. I hate a "tippy canoe" ... so the more stable the better.  It will be 2-3 night trips ... I usually bring a backpack and a barrel ... I dont care about single carry since I dont foresee long portages.  For a kayak same thing  . stability .. I have a couple of kayaks but they are not suitable to carry very much.

If you have recommendations on brand, outfitter, length, etc. that would be great ... anything .. I'll take it.

Thanks

It's certainly a double standard, but an understandable one. You can control people travelling to go camping by closing campgrounds and Ontario/National parks. On the other hand, how do you control people going to their own cottages - set up checkpoints and start asking for ID along every highway in the province?

They're limiting movement when and how they can, but the government's power is (fortunately) not infinite. We're just unlucky enough to have a hobby they have control over.

True enough ... in my area those going to Quebec at one point had to go through a checkpoint and if they were heading to the cottage they were told to turn around and go back to Ottawa.  But lets all be honest . .at this point there no appetite for that with the govt or police .. and thats understandable.  We just need to grin and bear it for a few more weeks.  if i didn't live so close to the road I'd tent in the back yard !

I do wonder sometimes while we and others abide by the stay at home order those with cottages have been going for a couple of months with no attempts to stop them.  I'm sure we all know people who have a cottage and travel a couple of hours to get there ..  one of the main reason backcountry camping is closed is because they dont want people traveling to get there, stopping for gas, supplies, etc.  .I can tolerate a double standard for a while but now we are well into June.  I have a neighbor thats been going to his cottage every weekend since early April ... he says its business as usual ...   .. .cottage country remains fully open and backcoutry does not ... it's getting harder and harder to not get at least a little bit irked ...

Anyone else feel the same.

I work from home now and love it .. but we are seeing that it doesn't work that way for kids ... I've lost count of the number of parents who have told me their straight A student is struggling this year.

But yes back to the post topic .. we are almost there ... and we will get in some decent camping this year for sure.  For those that don't normally do fall trips try one ... you might not be able to swim but no flies balances that out ...  how many sleeps til it opens ?

Trip Planning » Almost there » 5/27/2021 10:20 am

The chief medical officer and other health units along with Childrens mental health are the ones calling for the kids to go back to school.  We are in a children's mental health crisis (e.g. CHEO here in Ottawa said they are up well over 200% increase over last year for mental health services) and its for that reason that they want them back in class ... agreed that the month of June usually carries the least amount of work but the benefit of having kids together again is huge .. even for a few weeks.

Shall we give him the buck a beer stuff ?

Trip Planning » Bass Fishing » 5/25/2021 8:47 pm

You will definitely get some bass in those lakes.  I have had good luck with the perch pattern scented tubes for some reason in Algonquin.  Other colors not so much ...
