Well, Christmas season is here and people are beginning to ask about Christmas gifts. I've always found Christmas to be an excellent time to upgrade and expand my camping arsenal. I'm quickly coming to a point though where I feel as though I have most or all of the basics. I'm sure, however, that I'm missing something, or that there are things that would benefit from an upgrade. With that being said, what is your favourite piece of camping gear? What do you love showing off to your camping buddies when you are in the woods?
For me, one of my favorite pieces of gear is my Platypus Gravityworks Filter. I love that it takes zero effort to have a nice, good tasting bag of water hanging from a tree for whatever needs might arise.

He posted this message on Facebook:
Hey Everyone,
I’ve got some sad news to share with you all.
I’ve recently had to make the very difficult decision to leave Jeff’s Map, effective today.
I wanted to genuinely thank every single one of you from the bottom of my heart. I truly appreciate all the support you’ve shown me over the years. I really, really appreciate it!
Jeff’s Map will continue to exist after my resignation. If you have any inquiries going forward, my business partner, Eric, will be the one operating the company. You can contact him at eric@jeffsmap.com
Although this chapter of my life may be ending, camping will always be a part of my life. Perhaps I’ll still be able to meet some of you out there
Clear skies and calm waters, everyone!
-Jeff

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone. I received a few MEC gift cards for my birthday last month so I picked up the Therm-a-Rest All Season Large.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I am currently leaning towards the ThermaRest Neoair Xtherm.
I am, however, in no rush to acquire one. Has anyone noticed if these (sleeping pads in general) go on sale occasionally?

I'm looking to purchase a sleeping pad. Up until now I've never used one, but thinking it might be nice to change that.
I've been considering the Nemo Cosmo Air Large, but at $179.99 I'm not sure whether or not I want to take the leap. The only Canadian retailer that I can find selling it is SAIL.
I'm wondering what you guys use? Is there a brand or specific model you would recommend. I'm 6'4 and 230lbs, so that also limits some of my options.
Thanks in advance!

I'll add a brief comment to help quell those crickets. As with the other two videos I thoroughly enjoyed this one. I thought adding a Jeff's Map visual of your routes was a great addition. It really helps one visualize where it is you are and where you are going. Great work and I'll look forward to the next series.

Thanks for all of the replies everyone. For my three night trip we ended up going to Bridle - Tattler - Bridle from the Shall Lake Access Point. It was a great trip with lots of fish being caught. While I have only now visited the park twice, Bridle Lake is my new favorite spot. Beautiful little lake all to yourself and decent bass fishing. If there are nicer spots I cannot wait to find them.
I'm still trying to decide where to go for my September 1-3 trip. Does anyone know if the camp sites on Raven Lake have good swimming? I hear you guys saying Linda is the superior lake, but I'm not sure if my party will be up for the trip. There are four of us going and I will be the only person to have canoe camped before and two of the people will be quite new to canoes in general. I still want to provide them with the portaging experience, but keep it pretty laid back. We also will not be able to arrive till mid-afternoon on the Thursday, which means that we cannot travel far on the first day and cannot stay late on the Saturday.
Any suggestions on locations that would fit the bill? Smaller lakes with good swimming spots is preferred.

If your are looking for a great place, my favorite for a short trip.... access #7 Source to Bruce to Raven to Owl to Linda. We've stayed on all these lakes with our favourite, on the Island on Linda, it has a picnic table. great place to watch both sunrise/sunset, fish, swim and if you take binoculars you can watch the moose, bear and bikers on the trail.
I'm interested in exploring this route sometime this Fall. Does anyone know how long it would take on average to get from Access #7 to Linda Lake?

Loved the Day 2 video. While I enjoyed the first one I thought the second installment was quite a bit better and I would have happily watched another twenty minutes. The close animal encounters were cool, but my highlight of the video was when you sped over the beaver dam.
Thanks for sharing.

I just finished the video and enjoyed it. Will stay tuned for the next part.I don't have many suggestions that either you or Steve haven't already hit on.
One thing that I love in camping videos is catching the sounds of being out there. Waves, birds, frogs, paddle strokes, etc. I'm not sure if your equipment is up to the task of capturing those things, but if in the future you are looking to include more scenic shots I wouldn't be too quick to accompany them with music. (I also appreciate how the wind on Day 1 would have made this next to impossible).
I also enjoyed the time lapse shot of the fire. Time lapses are always nice to show the progress of things around camp.
Also, I think it would be great if you used some of your talking time to walk us through your trip plans. How long are you out for, what's the final destination, what did you pack, how did you pack it, etc.
Again, great video and I look forward to Day Two!

Thanks for the advisory to stay clear of Tim River this time of year.
We ended up booking Bridle - Tatler - Bridle from the Shall Lake access point. Should be a very laid back trip and hopefully we will catch a few pike and/or bass as well.

A buddy and I are planning on visiting Algonquin from August 17-20 (three nights), and are looking for suggestions on nice routes to take. Last year we launched at Kiosk and journeyed through that portion of the park so would like to explore new areas this year.
I've been considering launching at Tim River and working our way up to Devine Lake and back. How is the water level in that area this time of year?
Would also be interested in other route suggestions that would be good for fishing (bass or pike), or that would give us good odds at seeing some moose.
I know this is an awfully open ended post, but would appreciate any suggestions. Where would you go?
Equipment » Tent Recommendations » 6/17/2016 6:41 am |
When you go camping with a bigger group of people, do you most often take one larger tent, or does everyone bring their own solo or two man tents? I'm looking at taking a trip with a few friends and most of them do not own a tent, so I have been considering whether or not I should buy a bigger tent that can hold us all. It might also be nice to have a bigger tent for car camping trips etc. I recognize that a big tent will be a little annoying for portages, but the trip I have in mind is only one overnight with one portage. With that being said, what tents would you recommend that have a bigger footprint? (4-6 people).
Catch-all Discussions » Are predictions for ice-out starting yet? » 4/25/2016 5:35 pm |
For those of you who have followed this in previous years, if they decide to push the date back further than the 28th, how long will they likely wait before announcing it? My current plan is to paddle up the Tim River to Devine Lake starting on the 28th, but that is looking like it might not be possible with the ice.

Thanks for all of the suggestions everyone. I was just browsing the MEC website and noticed that the Black Diamond Storm was on sale for $43 so I ordered one of those.

I'm hoping to pick up a new headlamp before camping season begins, and was wondering what you guys use and recommend. My previous headlamp was a Petzl Zipka (
I am hoping to get something with a little more brightness this time around and have been considering the ThruNite TH10 ( ). Is this a good option?
Thanks in advance for any recommendations.
