Oo sorry. If it's confusing I can remove it (or maybe change the icon?) I just included that because I wanted to build an association between the text and the fact that it's directly related to the existence of 'extra' campsites that canoeists can use (i.e. that some of the backpacking sites can be used as canoe sites). Like essentially there's nowhere I can point to and explicitly say 'these are the canoeing sites on the lake' but that's basically what the note is trying to do indirectly.

Yea, that's just an old site. Last I looked they still had the ones on Chickaree (off Happy Isle) and Bluebird (near the west gate just S of the highway) as red triangles even though those both haven't been open in years

Low enough that you can't really do the route. GFromKitch was the one that pointed that out to me a couple of years ago when he tried late in the year.

I don't know anyone who's done Hay to Big mink but it's on my todo list. I expect it to be a challenge. If you try it I'd really love to hear what you find :D

Yes, my map is wrong here. It is indeed at the start of the portage to Mama L. I'd GPSed the correct site but later on I got the impression that it'd been moved. That's not the case.

Anyhow, as Tripper says it isn't too great.

The error will be fixed on the next version of the map

@Shayne74 This happens all year long in the offseason as well as for a couple of low use access points (Aylen and Livingstone)

There's no need to visit the permit office after a trip.

Opeongo and the West Gate are both run by Ontario Parks so they might be willing to do that for you. In the past they've issued me a Canoe Lake permit at the West Gate but more recently someone else I know was rebuffed so it could go either way for you.

Basically it depends on which access point you're starting at. If you're going through Kearney then no, you need to get your permit at Kearney (it's privately run and they're contractually entitled to get their cut of the permit revenue).

I've stayed there before. I can guarantee it's exactly where my map says it is.

The Ontario Parks reservation map isn't even close to being spatially accurate, but I don't think that's really something that concerns them (since it's not for navigation or anything). But yea, that means that it can be a bit confusing at times.

In general I'd always trust my map regarding the campsite placements. While the odd one might be a bit off (~10% aren't GPSed yet,) even the least accurate ones on my map shouldn't be too far off.

I think it might be possible. Me and GFromKitch checked it out from both ends and it looks good. I have a historic map that shows it as a route with one short portage (I think there used to be a dam on it)

That's too bad about Rence

It was always nice to be able to have the lake to yourself

I use cork squares like MartinG for my own copy.

A year or two back I asked around and some of the alternate solutions people had come up with included framing, using sticky tack, just taping it to the wall, mounting it on plywood and dry mounting it.

I believe dry mounting involves heat which might be an issue since the maps are printed on plastic. If you'd like to try that I'd happy to swap your plastic copy for a custom printed paper copy
