Clarkey71 should have written "@nvm" instead of "nvm" at the beginning of the post as that is who it was directed at, not you, Lukatch.
Trip Planning » Opeongo to Redrock portage » 7/20/2021 6:19 am |
First hand experience walking that portage in the snow but not trying it with a canoe cart - I would say no. That being said, I've heard of people doing strange things that I wouldn't do so maybe it's possible.
Where In Algonquin? » WIA 488 » 7/01/2021 6:38 am |
Never been there, but I'll guess Booth. Thinking back, I seldom have been through lakes with a meadow along their edge...or at least have seen them as I go through.
Equipment » Mylar Bags for Dehydrated Meals- suggestions? » 7/01/2021 6:34 am |
I'm with Martin - I use ziploc bags and rehydrate contents in my pot/bowl. I often don't use the freezer version and just use the thinner sandwich bag or quart sized bags as the contents do not stay in the freezer more than a month before a trip. I typically make my packaging choices based upon reduction in weight and waste so an 8" X 12" would be larger than needed for most of my dehydrated dishes.

@Trippythings - I replaced my Jeff's Map bookmark with yours months ago...nice resource to include on your site, so thank you!
Trip Planning » Bonfield-Dickson or Unicorn Hill? » 5/06/2021 8:13 am |
Neither is easy but the shorter length/duration of Unicorn Hill makes me lean towards that being a lower overall energy requirement.
I would not call the Dickson-Bonfield "flat" - it has a 44 meter elevation gain from Dickson Lake and is undulating along the way with various smaller climbs and drops - I would wager that the cumulative elevation gain is nearly as much as the 70 meter elevation gain of Unicorn Hill.
The concept of doing the bigger portages later in the trip is a wise choice regardless of which loop you choose!

This is great that the Ministry has changed their policy and it would be better if they could put more teeth behind it with a fine but as a first step goes...nice!

Excellent points, trippythings. From the literature I have reviewed in the past, there is not a drop-off in efficacy of that first dose for 3-4 months following administration; the approach Canada has employed mirrors what the UK initiated in a larger scale. But the research on single-dose application is far less frequent so there will be many unanswered questions around that specific issue.
There was a bit of good news published over the weekend; Israel, who leads the world in most measures of vaccination, had their first day with zero Covid-related deaths reported for the first time in 10 months.

The study results linked below include a timeframe of December 2020 to March 2021 and provide guidance of their real-world results related to a specific vaccine type (mRNA from Pfizer or Moderna) but not all people are receiving that type so there is likely variability in the efficacy of mRNA vs. others. They defined "partially immunized" as greater than or equal to 14 days after the first dose and fully immunized as greater than or equal to 14 days after the second dose. They found 5.2% of recipients tested positive for Covid after showing symptoms or purely as a result of a test. They also identified very clearly that: "The 13 person-days between vaccine administration and partial or full immunization were considered excluded at-risk person-time because immunity was considered to be indeterminate."
So the esteemed clinicians involved in this particular set of research could not conclude that you were safe in a short time after the first dose (two weeks) and concluded that there was still a risk after the 14 days post first-dose, if I am reading this correctly.
It is far simpler to follow the distilled guidance from the CDC and other health organizations for the appropriate behaviors to reduce the risk of virus transmission during and after receiving the vaccine. In other words, they recommend mask use and distancing among other behavioral adjustments. Of course, anyone can choose to follow or ignore their guidance but it would be irresponsible to inform the public that "there is no risk" or "that's wrong" without providing sound evidence otherwise.

I think I'll give the powdered coconut and powdered milk a shot in a trial recipe at home. Thanks for the tip!
Trip Planning » Top 3 Backcountry Meals » 4/21/2021 12:49 pm |
I start like ScouterGriz - ribeye or NY strip steaks on night 1 with baked potatoes
We typically plan a fish dinner based on what we've caught - sautéed in butter with lemon juice, side of noodles or rice.
Then we move to dehydrated for meals after that - stuffed peppers, chili, chicken & dumplings, etc.
I'm going to look into cooking and dehydrating a thai masaman curry dish. Not sure how I'll handle the fats from the oil and coconut milk but I'll see if I can figure out a way.

@ TripperMike don't lose hope. They are stacked and they're in a good position to go deep...oozing talent and have some great leaders in that mix. Hopefully you have to cope with making paddling plans around playoff schedules!

Imagine a Stanley Cup Finals game in the Leaf's Scotiabank arena filled to capacity. Everyone in that arena is now dead. For game 2 only a third of the fans show up. They are now dead too.
That's how many people have died in Canada. Many of them alone. Without seeing a spouse, children or siblings; without the comfort of a family member even present.
Last April Canada was averaging around 1,000 new cases per day. This April it is likely north of 6,000 new cases every day.
Nobody likes the situation for sure - the uncertainty, the limitations, the cancellations, the date changes, the miscommunications. These are difficult decisions and complex scenarios that must be accounted for and these are merely people who are trying to do their best under very difficult conditions. Imagine if all of us were under that kind of scrutiny for every decision and statement we make...
I've always admired Canadian's for their polite and considerate manners. Don't let the stress of a virus turn you into rude, offensive, complaining Americans! (I'm an American, by the way) ;-) At least we are here and able to plan or just daydream about a canoe trip.

You are 100% correct, Bob! For others who may follow in our footsteps, wear wading shoes here as the mussel shells that litter the sandy bottom are quite sharp.

Looks like you are at the northern end of St. Andrews looking due south towards the portage to Tarn Lake. You might even be at a campsite with a very firm set of chairs.
