There aren't any 'jump off' sites at Opeongo, no. There are 2-3 sites within spitting distance of the put-in however. I don't imagine they're heavily used except by people doing the same thing you are.

@RC: thanks for the feedback! I've got some new ideas for my next trip so hopefully I can crank it up a notch.
@Steve: I think I've watched Lesta's entire video collection while at work. Best place for it!

Thanks for replying - I was really hearing the crickets chirp on this post! The good news is this was the final video of the trip, so I'm done for now. My next camping trip is actually coming up soon and I do intend to make videos for it as well (having learned a few things I think), but I'll try to pace myself ;)
In all my trips in Algonquin only four have been in a canoe. With a wife and a dog and a baby I can feel the pressures of a canoe calling, but my solo trips will always and forever be done in a kayak. I love it too much to change. So I hear you - you couldn't get me out of my kayak either.
Yeah, it's a carbon fiber paddle - a Werner Kalliste bent shaft to be specific. I'm always really careful with it when I'm using it to push, pole, or getting in/out of the kayak, so no I haven't been worried. That being said, a paddle doesn't have to be mistreated to break, sometimes it just happens. I've so far neglected to take a backup paddle on any of my trips and gotten away with it, but there will come a day when I'll regret that choice!

The final video of this trip is now up! Due to a combination of a not-so-waterproof waterproof camera and being out of batteries for my SLR, I had very little footage of the last day (Day 4) so I combined 3 and 4 into a single video. I hope you enjoy it and, as before, feedback is appreciated!

@Martin: Yes, that's a Titan kettle. I've been quite happy with it since it joined my gear a couple years go.
Re: twig stoves. I've never used any twig stove except my Bush Buddy but I can't imagine there are massive differences between models. If you've already tried three different ones and not liked any of them, I'm thinking twig stoves probably aren't your thing. Was it something specific about those stoves you didn't like?
@Kellycamps: That was definitely an unusual experience to say the least, but solo camping probably does lead to extra wildlife encounters just because you're quieter. Although I spent enough time talking to the camera on this trip to scare off plenty!

@RC: Thanks for the comments and I'm glad you enjoyed it! Beaver dams are great fun - when you're headed downstream anyway ;)

I've not seen that issue with my stove (kicking off sparks/embers) but it's a problem that solves itself. In windy conditions there's no chance I could have it up on a table like this in the first place. I'm sure you can tell from the video that it's a very calm morning - there was no cause for concern.

The Day 2 video is done! Day 2 was travelling from Merchant to Shippagew Lake, and includes a very close up and personal encounter with a moose. As with Day 1, feedback is greatly appreciated. Hope you enjoy it!

@RCShevalier: Thanks for the feedback. I'm not sure if I spent much time talking about my travel plans this time around, but I'll see what I can do. Another suggestion to talk about my gear and how I pack? Hrm. I did film a number of videos talking about that sort of thing (for my website, not specifically for trip reports) so I'll see if I can incorporate some of those. Yes - scenic videos with the original sound would be good, you're right. I hope I took some, because otherwise that was a grave oversight!
@Martin: entirely accidental I assure you ;). I intentionally bought this particular hat a size too small. It hurt like hell for about two months until it stretched out properly, but it fits on my head like it's screwed on - I've never had it blow off, including during water taxi rides.
Day 2 will include the close encounter with the moose video some of you have probably seen on facebook. Once I find time to work on Day 2.

Thanks for the feedback Steve!
1. I have an entire website and loads of videos devoted to this topic so I figured I shouldn't focus too heavily on the "kayak" side of things in trip reports, but maybe I'll slip in a little kayak-specific stuff into them going forward - believe me, I can sure talk kayak camping.
2. I do. My SLR takes great photos but is pretty unreliable for video. I have a fantastic point and shoot camera so I think I'm going to retire the SLR from camping trips going forward. It makes me a bit sad, but it also means I'll be dropping about 4-5 pounds of weight from my gear. I think I can live with it.
3. Yeah, I rambled - I know it. Day one, like I said in my videos, I'm positively giddy to be out there and it makes me talk too much. I'll cut it down for the other days.
Sadly I had a bit of an issue with the (brand new) waterproof camera I took, in that it turned out to be not entirely waterproof. I have a few hours of videos from day 2 and day 4 that are more or less unusable as they're too blurry (condensation in the lens) to make out. But I still have lots of footage to put reports together I think.

Hey folks,
I've taken a stab at a video trip report this time. Day 1 is up at
Having never done a video report before, I learned a lot while putting this one together. I would appreciate feedback about what you enjoy, but also what you don't, about this video. Constructive criticism is appreciated so I can improve! Having watched my own video a couple dozen times while creating it, my own comments are:
1. If I can't get my SLR to reliably focus for filming video, don't use it for filming video.
2. Less talk, more music and scenery
3. Shorter
I can't fix the occasional out-of-focus video for the other days of this trip since it's already been shot, but numbers 2 and 3 I'll do something about.
Any and all feedback is appreciated!

Great read! I'm already starting to think about my daughter's first camping trip, and she's 10 months old ;). It's a bit nerve-wracking I imagine, taking your own child camping, wanting them to have a good time and love something that you love.
I'd say you pulled it off despite challenging conditions!

Good read - thanks. While some folks' lack of respect for their fellow campers can be frustrating, try not to let it get to you. If it weren't for your beautiful photos which shout "I'm really happy to be here" I'm not sure I'd be convinced you had a good time ;)

Good video! Nice to get a tour of a bunch of sites all in one vid. I've stayed on Harry's but not for years - can't even remember what campsite I was on. I remember I had the lake to myself and that wolves were howling overnight. Was pretty cool.

I've got this "what if" scenario running through my head now thanks to this thread, especially since I'm scheduled to spend a night on Shippagew on my upcoming trip (which has only one reservable campsite). I think I'll just head back to Big Trout if someone's squatting on my site, especially since I'll be out there alone. It's not worth attempting anything else.
Trip Planning » Would these campsites be considered Crow Bay or Lavieille? » 7/28/2016 5:48 pm |
I am unreasonably excited to learn that I've never camped on Lavieille. Who knew that actually paying attention to the map would tell me things - thanks spicol!
@Martin: You had your dry suit on I imagine, so let's go with "almost had one of the worst experiences of your life" instead. But you pulled it off, and survived to later portage through snow drifts ;)
Since I've never camped on Lavieille (!) or Animoosh, I'll go for two new pins in one trip then. I've been on Big Crow a dozen times so I don't think I'll go that route, instead I'll take the 5k portage in both directions. Now I just have to decide if I'm going to change the trip coming up in a week, or if I do this in September. Thanks for the help!
Trip Planning » Would these campsites be considered Crow Bay or Lavieille? » 7/28/2016 11:28 am |
Pfft - you and your logic. Just because something makes sense doesn't mean that's how it's been done ;)
It's not that I don't revisit lakes - I do all the time. But I try to book routes that have me camping on at least one lake I've never camped on before. Booking a trip to finally put a pin in big, beautiful Lavieille? Awesome! Booking a trip where the goal is Crow Bay? Not so much, ignoring that it would be the same route either way of course. It makes sense in my head.
Fine then. I'll still book a trip with a couple nights on Lavieille, and then I'll portage into Animoosh to get a new pin that way. Except I don't recall hearing anything that exciting about Animoosh. You barely mention it in your own trip report and you camped there!
