I would add that Kevin’s book Backcountry Eats does an excellent job discussing dehydrating rice, pasta, etc. New process for me that we are using this year.

I just bought the 13. I debated the size but think it was a good decision.

I used weather reports when on Lake Huron but don’t worry so much in Algonquin.
Trip Planning » Possibility of Site-specific Reservations and Increased Fees » 4/14/2022 6:47 pm |
I was actually thinking of going further North this summer but might do one last big trip in Algonquin recognizing that it will probably be the last year I camp there.
And it isn’t because I am worried about picking the perfect site. We have only had one truly terrible site and one that we chose not to camp at that was terrible. But we pick a site based on if we are tired when we hit the lake or want to paddle on a bit and I’m not prepared to give that up.
Honestly I think they hope this will force most people who do trips that are longer than 2-3 days out of the park. It’s all part of the rebranding of OP as using a for profit model
Trip Planning » Possibility of Site-specific Reservations and Increased Fees » 4/14/2022 6:45 pm |
I will stop camping in Algonquin if they go site specific. I prefer to do 2-4 week trips and I have no interest in spending time online figuring out what site to pick. It isn’t a hotel. Things like weather matter. They impact travel and site selection. I’m not staying on an open site in a storm on Big Trout when only 1/2 the sites are booked due to rules that ignore the reality of backcountry camping.

Hi There,
I'm not sure if this helps in your search at all, there are a few women's only groups on Facebook such as "Women Backcountry Campers Ontario"
Hope that helps.
Thanks. I’m not really an avid Facebook user so I was looking for other avenues.

Not sure if this is the right place to post this but I’m looking for some other women interested in doing tripping with - could be solo or tandem. Weekends in May/ June or longer trips in July/ August.
PM me if you want to discuss.

No, we only fish when my husband comes and he cleans all the fish. I’ve never really got into fishing although I don’t mind going fishing with others if they know what they are doing.

Moose can be far more dangerous on a campsite then a bear. My husband hunts so he is very good at hearing them in the bush. Anytime they have come up to our campsite he has kept them from approaching us by making noise before they get to our site (even when the site is in the middle of the runway.)

Honestly mostly I’m just so relieved to be away from the craziness in of our society that I don’t freak out. But I also love paddling with others and wish I had more paddling partners 🤷🏻♀️

I think I see this one differently because I think all that matters to politicians is what the GTA/Southern Ontario thinks because that is where the bulk of votes are. The majority of the GTA canoe camps in groups of 4 or less (if they aren’t commercial) so if people actually write to government I do think they will backtrack on that. The majority of the GTA / Southern Ontario also does primarily weekend trips so the idea of spending months online researching sites and booking it like a hotel and then bragging on YouTube about the site they got actually probably appeals to most of the middle class urban boating class. This is disappointing to me because not only is it not how I trip. I think it undermines the basic values of backcountry camping 🤷🏻♀️.
I think I’m going to go to parks for weekend trips but start looking to other places/ provinces with more open booking options for longer trips if they go ahead with this in the parks I canoe in the most 🤷🏻♀️

I am super disappointed with this. This is all about monetizing the park system. It completely undermines the concept of backcountry.
I will probably stop going to Algonquin if they implement this.
They did specifically say they aren’t applying this to canoe sites in Algonquin. If they do, I am pretty sure I’ll stop supporting the park system. It’s an aberration IMHO.

Without delving into politics, I would say that our Government is influenced by public opinion. So I stand by the idea that writing the 3 levels (Premier, Minister in charge and your MPP) is the most impactful thing we can do.
I encourage everyone to write if this is an issue that matters to them.
