Interesting...you think its due to the cormorants? Had not considered that.

The banded gray jays are part of an ongoing study in Algonquin started years ago by dan Strickland.

Sadly I have just found out that map maker extraordinaire Jeff McMurtie has left jeffsmap.com. I'm unsure of the reasons but am profoundly saddened at the loss. Jeff brought a wonderful product and put it out there for
all to use and enjoy and he was genuinely concerned about your trip going well and his map contributing to that great trip. Happy paddling Jeff.

Sadly American eels were extirpated from the park in the early half of the last century. The last confirmed eel in the boundaries of algonquin park was 1936. They are capable of by-passing dams going upstream (can breathe for short periods on land and leap over small dams) but are not smart enough to avoid them on the downstream return and are sucked into the turbines and chopped up in hydro dams.

Obviously an error in that article...we're not at August 20th quite yet.

Forest fires are numbered in the province. Algonquin park 20 means it is the 20th fire in the province this year. Not that it is on the 20th of the month.

As long as you follow the rules it doesn't matter how long you take. Using a cedar strip is mandatory to be considered an official Brent run and sticking to the exact route. The cedar strip is the sticking point for most.

Don't drink tea or coffee myself but have tripped with people who just use a bit of powdered milk or even the small individual milk containers you get from mcdonalds or Tim hortons.

Where is Brule?  I don't think I've been on that lake before...can't seem to find it on a map

follow potter creek north from canoe lake. It ends in Potter lake and a shortish portage brings you to brule.

I also prefer Highland, especially for a first trip, though the sites on Provoking do see a lot of use by daytrippers. If going for an easy weekend trip with newbies I'll book two sites on Provoking. That way if there's an issue, you can backtrack to the split and go up the opposite side, cutting off about 10km, or bail out in a couple of hours.

a good point. The first time I took my kids on the highlands we stayed on west provoking the first night then hiked to east provoking the next. After setting up camp on east provoking around 2-2:30 the rain started...and continued...at about 5 it was not letting up. It was pretty miserable, especially when the water started pooling around the tent. We packed up and hiked to the car and were there before dark.

The trails are pretty closed in and several sections are marshy and thus have lots of bugs but the campsites are great, mostly lightly used, good swimming, nice fire pits. You'll enjoy it for sure. My recommendation would be the highlands. Stay on provoking first night then head or harness next night. I would recommend east end provoking, but you really can't go wrong on either side of the lake.

Hi Gord

My family and I are going to paddle that section of the mad the last week of July. I suspect we'll be walking it by then unless the rain forecast changes.

Have you done any of the other links?

Balderson, not balderdash.

superstore carries the mesh pack of assorted cheese.

Costco carries a mesh pack of just aged cheddar and it is excellent for longer trips.

The company has expanded a great deal.  You should check it out.  Prices are listed right on their site.

They even offer packages for canoe/camping.  I didn't check out the details, but it might be of interest.
