I picked up a pair of Bushnell binos from MEC last fall for $20. They are not good quality compared to more expensive ones, but they are compact and perfect for spotting campsites, portages or just having a closer look at wildlife. They fit into one of the front pockets of my PFD, which is perfect for what I use them for.

Lots of good info and advice, thanks! Now I'm just hoping the forecast gets a little better for the weekend...

I am fairly new to canoe tripping, this spring will be my 4th trip into the AP backcountry and my 2nd time going solo. I do lots of paddling around Lake Huron and the Saugeen river system, but have not done much in colder water temps. What is recommended as far as clothing goes? I have cold water paddling gloves, should I be thinking about any other neoprene clothing? Survival suit is probably over the top?
I know to stay close to the shoreline and all that stuff, just really wondering what people do for clothing in the spring?

ATVenture you rock!....I wish I was close enough to go and check things out. I really apppreciate the reports and pictures you've been posting....now, how about that road into Magnetawan?
I spoke with the guy from Canoe Algonquin in Kearney yesterday and asked about the Magnetawan access road, he informed me that they have not been down that road yet, but was going to attempt it today or tomorrow. I will post any update I receive on this.

Another good read! Thanks for all the reports Peek, they are keeping me sane until ice out... or making it worse, not sure, but entertaining nevertheless. Keep em coming!

Thanks Peek, I think we will try it, always up for an adventure either way.
I'm looking at Jeffs map right now and was wondering if anyone could tell me what the little pinkish marks/irregular shapes signify? You can see them on a lot of streams/inlets etc.

Is it possible to skip the Queer Lake to Tim River portage through Little Trout Creek in the spring? Might be going through that way, was wondering if it was worth a try?
Trip Planning » Spring trip » 2/02/2017 9:46 am |
I like the idea of going up through Shah to the Tim R, how bad are the beaver dams through that section of river to Little Trout? Any issues going upstream in the spring? I've seen that the water levels on the Tim can be an issue as well, not a problem in the spring?
As far as fishing, I am a rookie, I have an idea of what to use to for lures (sounds like everyone has their own ideas about that). Will I have more luck fishing around streams? Look for structure in the water (I plan on bringing a little fish finder)? What time of day is good? Do I need to get deep or can I troll near the surface this time of year? Any advice is welcome.

Hi folks, I'm somewhat new to canoe tripping and this is my first post here. I've been on 3 trips so far, all last season. I've never been in the park for the spring season. I know to expect very cold water and sloppy portages with lots of blow downs etc. Any other advice for me? I am wondering if anyone can tell me how difficult the 2435m Little Misty to Queer Lake portage is? I plan on doing a little fishing while in the park, advice for that is also welcome!
I'm hoping to get in the first weekend in May for 4 days. My route so far looks like this.... Let me know what you think?!
