| History » A Few Rustic Huts: interview with author Sandy Gage » 11/13/2024 7:58 pm |
My wife does a freewheeling interview show on Hunter's Bay Radio (88.7 The Bay) in Huntsville. The most recent one features Sandy Gage, author of "A Few Rustic Huts," recently published as a second edition by the FOAP.
In her own words: "Hey folks! Here's the link to the podcast of my interview with Sandy Gage, which aired on "Everything Bagels," 88.7–The Bay, on Nov. 10. He's an author, historian, hiker, paddler, Camp Pathfinder alumnus, and a lover of Algonquin Park, bluebirds and the great outdoors! I think you'll enjoy listening to our chat."
Here's the link to the podcast:

If you enjoy that, there are a few other Algonquin Park-related interviews in her catalogue:
Camil Lapointe - Algonquin Park canoe trip guide
Mike Sladden - owner/director emeritus of Camp Pathfinder on Source Lake
Jack Hurley - legendary canoe builder and APP tripping veteran
Colin Bruce - AO staff and talented wildlife photgrapher

I'll be coming in from the east, but I may take you up on the suggestion and just do the extra drive. Doesn't seem like there are many options. I'll be in a pickup truck though...doable to tie the canoe down somehow? Truck has an 8ft bed.
Yep, doable tie-down. See you then, we are open 9-5 at that time. Reservations not essential but not a bad idea a week of so ahead of time.

Depends on the weather, wind, your abilities, skill, etc. etc. You never know, you may have to hug the western shoreline, so be flexible and watch the weather.
| Trip Planning » Looks like we're due for a fire ban soon » 6/27/2023 8:46 pm |
Yes, as you mentioned, it is also about fire fighting resources and the fact that the MNRF determines when the RFZ will be lifted in certain area, not Algonquin Park management. So, until those fires north of APP start going out, we probably won't see any lifting of the frei ban.

You will need to give hints.. That is prettty generic (though lovely) view.

If you are handy with a sewing machine, they are not hard to make yourself. The contours of the Cruiser gunwales will add some challenge. Search for Youtube and check the plans in Cliff Jacobson's "Canoeing Wild Rivers."

Hey, Yellowcanoe, I have no idea where the photo was taken but if you are who I think you are, we had a fun trip with Glenn and my dog Mica back in the day. Started at Kiosk, looped around though Manitou, Three Mile, Maple, Erables, Big Thunder, Club, Waterclear, etc in three days. That was a lot of portaging over a three-day trip. Hope you are well.

Cliffs on the east, similar to Travers but smaller, heading in a different direction, no portage.
Last guess, Whitefish?
TripperMike uses the clues and comes up a winner! Whitefish Lake it is, we had just left the northernmost site and were headed back to the Rock Lake access point. Your turn, Mike.
Sorry, Martin, not your WIA today.

Low but passable. Several groups have been down in the last while. You'll have to make your own decisions about running rapids.

No offense to Bob, but if anybody else with extensive experience at ice-out observation (eg, me, Martin G, many others) had posted a rebuttal, would you have flamed them instead of kissing their butt?

I have been watching the FOAP ice out page for at least 10 years straight now and EVERY other year they included pictures from elsewhere. I guess this proves technology is taking over as all they are showing is the LOTR cam.
Agreed. And I know for a fact that FOAP has staff that drive from Dwight to the Visitor Centre EVERY SINGLE DAY. It would not be be hard for them to snap a few pics for the public. What else do they have going on in April?
Anecdotally, I can tell you that outside the park, the big Huntsville lakes just opened, Dwight Bay on Lake of Bays is open and Oxtongue Lake is 50% open. AO staff report that Tea Lake is 20% open, Smoke looks pretty solid and Ope is open around the boat launch but not beyond that. Cold nights this week. It will be another 10 days or more.

I was chatting with the chef from Bartlett Lodge today, he lives in Oxtongue Lake in the winter. He drilled a hole into Cache Lake two days ago and reported a total thickness of 21". About 5" of crap ice, six inches of water and the rest good solid ice. We are a ways off, especially since overnight temps next week are consistently below freezing.

Rence?
Yessiree, Rence Lake it is. The innermost of the lake's two sites, which is one of the nicest campsites in APP, IMHO.
Your turn to puzzle everyone, John McClane.
