I installed the Scotty mount as well. I bring a light single blade if I’m in my pack boat and use that when I fish and stow the double.

Somehow managed to get this booking in Killarney this year with some of the best sites on the trail but the reservation gymnastics I had to perform were quite something. You want to hike this beautiful trail now you either have to be on top of it really early or incredibly lucky.

I don’t Gord sorry but if you post this over at canoetripping.net someone will likely help you out. Lots of canoe builders over there.

So purely my unsolicated experience and again YMMV but I think you need to keep your feet happy. I use trip specific foot wear.
Some examples from left to right.

Gortex mid cut boot. - hiking only in cold weather.

Non Gortex mid cut- hiking in summer and what I will likely be using 90% of the time now move forward as I broke my foot and support is a bigger concern now.

Trail runner- I will still use on easier hikes and likely what more serious hikers use most of the time.

Canoeing. Totally different shoes for me.

Have some mid cut La Sportiva that I’m trying this year and Astrals that will drain well, offer support and have tread that do well in wet conditions. Astral low cut too have worked well for me.

Yup - Kinda what I like about a light mesh non waterproof boot - I never have to avoid the water or how deep it may be as a mesh type as it will dry quicker than the membrane models.
I like the goretex options for terrestrial trips.

The Salomon model mentioned above doesn’t seem to be stocked at many retailers.
I will double check the Salomon Canada site to make sure it’s legit as there was a scam Salomon site that I ran into a year or two back.

It’s legit. Have ordered and received plus a different pair for my daughter. Hiking La Clouche with her this year.

I’m trying these this year. I have had good luck with Salomon.

Broke my foot last year hiking the Lake Superior trail. Picked up some higher cut canoeing and hiking shoes this winter as I think I will need them now.

I own the Quest 4D GTX mentioned too. Won’t wear those in summer Goretex is too hot for me. YMMV.

Ultimately we are not going to have sustained temps at night above freezing until may and that's more determines when bugs show up.

Well that is the key question as it impacts water temps but to me if temps keep going the way they are and ice is really as early as we think, April should be full of night temps above 0 and bugs should be early.  I’m just guessing though.

So I think the bugs are going to react to the weather conditions not a calendar. Hypothetically if we are a month ahead here.  Say April 1 ice out instead of May 1.  Black flies should arrive around mid April or so and stick around the typical 4-5 weeks. Which means I guess June could actually be a great month to be out there this year if my logic is correct. Usually the month I avoid.
My spring trip is booked for May 13-20 which could be really bad for black flies now depending on the actual ice out.

So in a nutshell..Personally I’m waiting for ice out and will likely adjust my early trips accordingly.

Not Cranebill. Wrong direction. This spot is south of 60 and Tepee is still the closest guess.
