Before we get too far off topic, we must acknowledge the heroic efforts of Krista Petrie-Wallace and Glenn Wallace in this rescue effort.  The two survivors almost certainly would have died had they not intervened.  In my opinion, Glenn took quite a risk in attempting to rescue 3 people, who cannot swim, underprepared, and with a language barrier, by himself.    Brave.  Heroic.  Heroes.

I am planning to base camp near Hailstorm Creek, Opeongo before mid September.  Does anyone have any experience and/or recommendations for a campsite?  We are planning to go into Hailstorm Creek each morning/evening in search of moose and fish during the mid day for trout.  Moose it the main aim.  Fishing is just to keep busy.

What about #16 (right next to the entrance to Hailstorm Creek)?  Too boggy/wet/buggy?

According to the Friends of Algonquin Park booklet, "The trail is 5.1 km long and fairly rigorous, but may be easily covered in a couple of hours by an active person."  You can usually get the booklet at the Park office or at the trail head for $0.50.

The regular Garmin and the new Garmin Mini can be paired, via Bluetooth, to your cell phone or tablet.  That makes using these devices easier since the cell phone or tablet will have a bigger screen.  It seems that the Bivystick is doing the same thing.  However, requiring pairing the emergency device with a cell phone in order for it to function creates a point of failure.  Cell phones/tablet are generally less water resistant or durable.

If you have cell phone reception, you would just call 911.  If you don't have cell phone reception, a "rescue app" on your phone can't call for a rescue anyway.  SPOT, Garmin inReach etc work by using satellite connection.  They don't need cell phone reception to work.  That's why they are most useful in areas with no, or spotty, cell coverage.

I am planning a trip from Access Point 2 to Rosebary via Tim River in early August.  If this drought/fire ban continues unabated, would the Tim River be passable?

I've heard that even in a good year, that portion of the Tim is shallow and full of beaver dams.

The official Twitter account of Algonquin Park (@Algonquin_PP) have been tweeting lots of photos of moose sightings.  They also tweet photos of the wildlife sighting board at the Visitor Center.  (5 moose seen on Hwy 60 on May 5.)

Yesterday (May 8), they tweeted, "Our Park Rangers are saying this weekend will likely be the best of the whole year for moose watching!"
