We were in Rain lake access last week end and saw about a dozen black fly.  Mosquitos were out, but not that bad.

I purchase the Tarn 3 from Kijiji.  MEC will not replace the fly because I am not the original owner.  I am not why this make a difference...Anyhow, I have re-installed the delaminated parts back on and will see if it hold up together.  I hope it does, at least in the rain.

I have a Tarn 3, slightly bigger version of Swede's tent. Great tent for the money, underrated due to one defective batch a few years ago (I got one of the lemons, which MEC was happy to replace with a good one).

What kind of tent were you using? Any tent in good condition should keep bugs and rain out, unless it's one of those things you see at Canadian Tire where the fly doesn't even fully cover it?

I also have a Marmot Limelight 3, this tent has been really good.  I strongly believe in good quality gear.  Good gear should not failed as opposed to cheap clone one.  Let us know how the tent hold up.

How do we expect them to be mid July, will I need to take blood transfusion supply for my dog.  I just pick up the Eureka mesh room and will work on getting it to work with my Kelty Noah tarp during the weekend.

Update for West side of the Park would be appreciated.

I will be entering Rain lake access in a few weeks.  We are picking up rental at basecamp in Kearney and paddling to Jubilee lake for a few nights with exploring other lakes during our stay.  I will let you know when we get back.

I have use Nesco from LeeVallee.  It is around the 100$.  It works well for what I use it for.  I have purchase a few extra trays and a few plastic liner for more liquid substance.

From what I heard from Excalibur, they are the top of the line.

I don't want to change the topic at hand but I have a question.  What do you at night with the nice cooking gear including cast iron pan with nice fry food smell.  Do you hang it with your food or do you hide it at a different location away from camp and from hanging food.

What is the proper way to put away cooking gear at night.

PS.  Maybe there is a better location for this question.

Thanks

I was wondering what is the best option or rule when it comes to fish preparation and cleaning.  Do you clean your fish after fishing while on the water or do you bring fish back to your campsite first.  What you do with the fish internal.  Also what do you do with the left over after fish is cooked (bones) for proper disposal to keep creatures away.

Let me know what is your practice.
Thanks.

I have decided a few things so far, I know and am getting late and looking at booking this trip in the next few days.  So What I have so far is this.

We will be leaving Cambridge at about 6am on Friday morning mid July.  drive to Algonquin Outfitters in Huntsville for canoe rental pick up.  Drive to Access #3, Rain lake.  I guess we should be on the water by 11 or 12.

Now this where you all,  point me in the right direction.  Should we paddle and find a site on Rain towards the East end set camp  or Sawyer Lake and stay at the same site for 2 nights and explore to Jubilee Lake or Rain Lake on Saturday and paddle around.  Possibly try some fishing.  Will leave camp Sunday to make the ride back.

I am aware this a short trip.  I am not sure how busy it get on Rain lake during weekend.  We are not looking at setting record.  I think having some time paddling together, set up camp on Friday and explore the Saturday, paddling around and try to fish.  Looking at getting back not too late on Sunday.

I think We should set up camp maybe once, since it is a quick trip.  Weather we go as far as Sawyer or just stay on Rain lake towards the East end and paddle and portage a bit.
I think this will be a good practice to see how our next trip would be,  how long we want to be away and figure how much paddling and portaging we want in our next trip.

Help me out.  I hope this make sense.

My daughter is 15 1/2.  Good paddler, she started her first trip when she was 7.  She has a week long camp canoeing and received good comment from organizer about her paddling skill and her attitudes.  Personally she can paddle for full day and be happy.  We travel light and portaging would not be a issue.   She also like fishing and find enjoyment in it.  Total opposite to her sister (this is why we are doing "Father and Daughter" trip this year.  I will be mountain biking with my second daughter).

I will look in Boknows suggestion for rain lake.  As long as we can get easy access to canoe rental and get our permit.  I find the suggestion of staying away from Highway 60 a good one.

Any other information needed let me know. We will be driving from Cambridge area.
Thanks

Finally secure vacation time for canoeing with my daughter this summer.  We will be going up Friday morning the 14th.  At this time I am planning to be paddling the Friday, Saturday and coming out on Sunday.  I would normally stop at Algonquin Outfitters outside the Park to pick up our rental canoe.  I maybe would be able to add Monday if seriously need it, although it would not be my first option.
Any suggestion route.

If you think crowd will be a issue, I would be willing to pay extra and get taxi at Opeongo Lake if this will help for crowd control.

Looking forward to hear your suggestion.

My comment maybe not entirely related to the post, but I thought I would mention it.
The first time I took my 2 girls canoeing they were 6 and 7.  The issue of getting to a lake and realize all  campsites occupied ( because of someone decided to stop at a different lake than reserved) was a issue for me.  What would I do with two tired kids and finding all the campsites with campers on our lake taken.  I felt better taking them to Massassauga PP back then , so I could reserve specific campsites.  Also once there we had a visit from the Park Warden visiting our campsite and going around the park.

Although my weeks of vacations have been reduce due to my new job, we have not been able to go up to Algonquin.  I can see from all of you, those are maybe remote incident, but it does still make me think twice about paddling long distances with girls and trying to find a site at night.
I hope to be in Algonquin soon and hopefully have great experience and not see this kind of behavior in our trips.

I have done Rock, Pen and Clydegale a few years back,  it was quiet as our trip was done in late October.  I will look at the West access as it is  a good option. I figure Canoe lake would be busy.
Last year we car camp coming back from Quebec City at Presqu'ile PP.  MY daughters were quick to point out that Canoeing is much quieter than Car Camping.  This is why maybe West access would be better.

I driving up from KW area.
I normally rent a Algonquin Outfitters.  Is there a location for rental on access #3?
We will be paddling 2 canoes.  We pack fairly light but I don't think the girls can carry a canoe and their pack for 2km.
I will look into the West Gate Access.  I am not too sure about a 2Km plus portage either to be honest (I need to start doing more exercise for the summer).

Thanks for all you input and will pull my map out tonight.  Any more suggestion would be welcome.

looking to take girls out this summer.  At tis time,  I think I can only go a few days at a time.  I would think Friday till Sunday is probably better and Saturday to Monday, unless someone think otherwise.    Looking for a simple 3 day loop and was looking at the Canoe Lake access.  I would think Burnt Island Lake, Sunbeam and Tom Thomson Lake get full during the weekend in August.  ( confirmation would be appreciated).

Any suggestion on a simple 3 day trip.  I will be with two young teenagers (12 and 14), they are good canoeist ( got confirmation of this from their counselors at a week long canoe trip camp.  I will be paddling with a young exited golden retriever.
We will need to rent a few canoes, I normally rent at Oxtongue Lake location.
I was thinking of Burnt Island for one night and Tom Thomson for the second.

Help me out.
Thanks

Where would you put your gear?

Paddle board are made for different application just like canoes.  Touring SUP would have a greater weight capacity.  I would think you need to be weight conscious and need to pack light.  If not already on the board, attachment can be added to secure gear.  With a decent weather forecast and warm temperature in July and August, someone could travel fairly light.  I am not too sure about long portage, weight seem to be less or equal to light pack canoe.

With the increasing popularity of the sport, has anyone seen or been doing  StandUp Paddleboard paddling overnight in the interior.  I have started reading about it on the Web and just wandering if this is something some paddlers in Algonquin Park have been doing.  I am curious about the possibility of this new way of travelling in the Park.  Also what are the perception of this new sport in the Park compare to Canoeing.

Curious to know...
