26 April 2024 , just  in time for Trout opener :-)

Trip Planning » White Partridge via the cart trail from the spur » 5/03/2023 7:19 pm

Ingress and Egress would be via the cart trail .
I’ve biked it before and that’s an option
If the road is passable and assuming I can figure
out a better ncanoe bike trailer 😁
But was also thinking  about the option of Ingress via horse and wagon .

Has anybody done the cart trail to WP recently ?

Last I heard the road was blocked from fallen trees after
a huge storm  and was  impassable but that was many many
years ago and I have been  focused  more  on  Big Trout
or Welcome Lakes for  my go to fishing lakes the last
10 years.

Also wondering if any body knows if  a Wagon Ride option
into this lake is still allowed and if there are still  any known
persons doing such horse drawn wagon transport?

Contact info would  be appreciated  if you know of any
person doing these Wagon Rides still.

Anyways
Thinking that as my tripping days wind down … there are a few lakes
that I would really like  to visit again and White Partridge ( plus North
Branch and Little Dickson as day trips plus maybe even WP creek to
the forks) are part of my bucket list. Big Trout is planned for 2023
as is   the Pen-> Welcome/Harry/Rence loop

Also
Has anybody  done the WP creek to the forks recently ?
How  are the alders , last time ( decades ago ) they were starting to
really over grow  the creek and likely now that means the creek is
impassable without a lot of impromptu portages ?

Tia for any answers to my questions

RIP Gordon , your songs will live on forever !

Gordon Lightfoot's Canary Yellow Canoe | The Stories They Hold

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lZ-5brdqGrs

Definitely a plus for using a ABS canoe in Whitewater 🤔
Still can not find his song “ CanaryYellow canoe “ but
I’ll keep searching 🙂
But
The lyrics could easily be
modified to be Algonquin related
and then hopefully heard often on the portages 😁
or
the original lyrics sung would be fine as well 🙄

Lyrics
In my canary yellow canoe - my yellow canoe
I want to go tripping in my canary yellow canoe
The Eastmain, Coppermine, Back River too
In my canary yellow canoe
In my canary yellow canoe - yellow canoe
I want to run rivers in my canary yellow canoe
The Desmoines River, Rupert River, George River too
In my canary yellow canoe
In my canary yellow canoe - mellow yellow canoe
I want to go tripping in my canary yellow canoe
Chebugema, Peace River, Resolute too
In my canary yellow canoe
In my canary yellow canoe - my elephant too
I want to go tripping in my canary yellow canoe
Churchill, Yellowknife, Ross River too
In my canary yellow canoe

Ooh-Key Doh-Key , seems Pen lake is a reasonable  location for  an opener trip.

Hoping to cross bows with fellow AAers
this May/Summer but until then for those
heading in early, here’s wishing you all great
weather ,cool nights for sleeping and high
teen/low 20’s daytime tripping temps plus
dry portages. However I fear boots
might be handy for a few of them 🤔.

Ladtly , hoping the ingress wind is at our  backs and as well at our back on the egress 🤔

Lastly tight lines if fishing and clear sky’s if star gazing
and hoping the early  trippers  do pitch a  tarp because
camping  without a campfire ( even in the rain)  is just
not right somehow,
Please go  prepared for night time warmth and maybe
Campfire camaraderie  where campfire  tall tales  get
taller the later in the night they are repeated 😁

Planning is the boring part, the actual tripping is the fun part 🙂

Later trips ( likely Aug or Sept) I hope to do one final trip to a Big T likely starting from a Canoe L  as a nostalgic trip redo of  my very first Algonquin  interior trip .

Seems my brother has hung up his portaging days a while back
and seeing I am not much younger , each year will likely be a challenge for me  knowing  eventually my tripping days too will be done .. But still  hoping that quite a few more paddle strokes and portages in my remaking years or months of tripping are achieved 🤔

Trip Planning » Trip planning 2023 » 4/21/2023 9:12 pm

Now that lakes are opening up , I anxiously
await the  official date that interior trips can
start .

Lots of plans swirling around my head with
a few that  will no doubt include Big Trout
for at least a 1 or 2 night sleepover .

To make this even more difficult , I started
to read Kevin Calan’s “Once  around the
Park” book .
I have read many of his  other books but
definitely now I am thinking that reading
this book much earlier in my life might of
been better because it is temping me to
see how I could consider doing the
meanest link .

Obviously would Bev done as many
smaller links or trips that’s would be more
suitable to my aging stamina and portage
weary shoulders.

Oh my , planning in fact is the easy part 🤔

Trip Planning » Cellular service along Hwy 60 ( especially Cannisby Bay PaddleIn sites » 5/23/2022 12:07 pm

Thank you to all who gave me advice on this matter

I ended up going to a Grand Lake on a solo trip and was able to fish Carcajou Bay , Upper and Lower Spectacle on my first day and Rowan on my second day .. sadly caught nothing , one possible bite on Rowan
and oddles of Bugs swarming but not really biting but quite the nuisance unless you like bug protein in your porridge

Catch-all Discussions » Trout in Lakes near the Canisbay canoe in sites » 5/07/2022 3:55 pm

Hi
I am planning  to do a 4-5 day canoe trip  into the  Canisbay canoe into campsites  (easy does it trip eh  seeing it’s my  first trip of the year for 3 years) and as such I am also likely to try out my fishing luck on nearby lakes with supposed non  official portages

Thinking Olive, Longspur and Kathlyn might be worth
the  effort  even if it is a bush wack  trail.
Anybody have advice on the endeavour ?

TIA

Trip Planning » Cellular service along Hwy 60 ( especially Cannisby Bay PaddleIn sites » 5/03/2022 8:03 pm

No really a fan of cell service when tripping  but does anybody know if
cell service is likely to work on the Paddle In sites on the Cannisby Bay paddle in sites

Just a contingency as my partner has a in-law relative that  has been admitted to  the SunnyBrook hospital in Toronto ( Palative care)  with
Restricted visiting to immediate sons and daughters
Therefore being able to be contacted by phone in case things turn worse is one thing we are looking at to possibly savage a spring fishing  trip and do a Cannisby Bay Paddle in site plus do some day trips to stocked lakes along  highway 60

So, has anybody used cell service on the interior sites on Cannisby Bay

Alternatively , what about cell service on Sunday Lake if Cannisby Bay paddle in sites are too far off the Hwy60 corridor for cell service

Thanks
Randy

How do you recharge your Fitbit, mine needs recharging every 3-4 days so on a 7 day trip it would be useless for almost half the trip

Mind you I do have a solar charger for charging my cell phone which we take for its camera function ( cellular and Bluetooth turned off so it does last the week but if on a longer trip we decided it would be a good idea to bring a small Renolgy solar charger

Trip Planning » White Partridge access from access point “A39” » 10/13/2021 9:57 pm

Is the road in fully open again .
Considering a bike in trip or are there other options beside “portaging or wheeling”in  a canoe over the 14km or so of access roads

Wondering if anybody can shed light on the
Rock  Creek portion of this possible trip.

Thinking a possible Spring trip when water levels
should be higher but would like to know if anybody has
traveled from access#10 to Rock Lake in the recent past

Yes sir, Jimmy is quite the individual.
One thing for sure he is always on time for a water taxi pickup
and should you arrive a tad early you might find him resting
at the portage :-)

Pic#2 is correct (Allan) but your guess of Waterclear for Pic#1 is incorrect

MNR says : Species in that lake depicted in Pic#1 are
( Or so says Paddle Planner)
Brook Trout
Lake Trout
Brook Stickleback
Finescale Dace
Northern Redbelly Dace

Writing the log helped with cabin fever as does Mark in the Park Season 2

Kudos to Barry as his layout of the trip log definitely enhanced the final result with picture enhancement like “ click for larger image”

Thanks to all for reading the trip log and your feedback . Here’s  hoping we can possibly get a trip of two in the park this season

Til then
Stay safe
