Excellent report and certainly a route for the "type 2 fun" memory banks. Virgin alder creeks are definitely hellish.
Funny how the garbage of yesteryear turns in the artifact of today. Sometimes it is still just garbage.

Bill Swift drilled a hole in the the ice yesterday on the bay in front of AO in Oxtongue Lake and reported 10" thickness. That's up from the 8" he reported earlier in the winter!

FWIW, AO staff drilled some test holes yesterday on Canoe and Opeongo. Measured solid ice thickness of 11" and 12" respectively. Less than most years but still a good amount of coverage. Cold spell coming up with overnight temps in the negative double digits next week. Could be making more ice by then!

Great report, and good plan to switch direction. I've stayed on that site on Clamshell, it is a gem. We caught a nice walleye there just to add to the ambience.

If you are entering the park from the west side (as in, via Huntsville), you can rent a canoe from Algonquin Outfitters in Oxtongue Lake. We don't deliver at that time but can tie it to your vehicle so you can take it to Rock L. We also rent foam blocks and straps if you don't have your own. (Full disclosure, I work for AO).

Travers??

Not Travers, though it is a similarly-shaped but somewhat smaller lake oriented in a different direction.

Not Carl Wilson. You'd have to do a portage to get to it.

Nosirree.

Here's a big clue: Take a look at the oversize wanigan in the canoe, with no tump strap. Would you want to portage that?

As nice as those cliffs are, they are not the right ones.

Not McCraney or Lavielle.
Here's a big hint: the bow paddler is gazing at some rather impressive cliffs on the east shore of the lake, which, of course, are out of frame.

No, but you are closer both in terms of geography and the fact that we are in the north end of the lake, paddling due south after leaving a campsite.

Nope and nope. South of all those lakes and not quite as big as any of them.
