Silky is the choice of many arborist's. My wife owns one for home use and it stays sharp and cuts like butter. As stated by SP don't horse it and it will last a life time. It is on my wish list for camp gear (my wife won't let me take her's on the trail - she is an arborist).

Thanks YC for the clarification - We stopped at the Flintstones site as well on Tuesday 9/25 and yes it has been very well cleared - I saw nothing damage wise there. Hope everything gets fixed on your friends cottage, easily (relatively that is) and quickly.

I didn't get into the park until Monday the 24th, after the storms. However, I can only think that what I saw on Cork was due to the storms. Here is a pic of the path to the thunderbox on the southern most site. Both sites had multiple blow downs. I would not have wanted to be there when they all went down.

If I came to a site with fresh bear sign, and you could tell they were successful in finding food (previous occupants left food ...) I'm out of there. But if it is a clean site and it looked as if he left without reward - I figure he won't be back for at least 2 days or more. I would just use extra caution with all the bear prep, and all.

Agreed - Looks more like Moose poo than bear. I also agree that you should be especially vigilant in your bear prep for the night.

To maximize the trout fishing, starting/ending at Opeongo might work better than a
North arm of Opeongo to Crow River site 20K
Crow River to Mallic 22K
Mallic to Radiant 22K
Radient to Pet (2nd portage) 20K
Pet to Perley 18K
Perley to Burnt Root (south end) 10K
Burnt Root to Big Trout (Southern island) 12K
Big Trout to Opeongo 14K
Make it a 10 day trip and add in layovers. I was looking at this as a possibility to do with a buddy in the future (nearing retirement and planning ahead).

I have stayed multiple times on 16 and like it a lot. Nice easy put in. Not much for views but nice site, it is sheltered from any winds and is quite shaded. I have investigated #12; great views of McCarthy's creek , the marsh and Booth. Up on top of a rise so you are open to a lot of wind but spacious. I am a shoulder season camper so I can't speak to bug issues on these sites. All this from memory of 4 years back, so take that into consideration too.

On old canvas tent's we used a candle, rubbing the seams where the sewing needle left a small opening. Haven't had that issue since the newer materials that are in existence now. I agree with AlgonquinTripper and bring a small candle for fire starter and sealing if necessary.

Nice report (both of them). You have strengthened my reserve to only head up there in the shoulder seasons. I love Algonquin, but bugs are not invited to my parties there.
