good question. I use the platy gravity 2L and this thing is worth its weight in gold, period. I cant believe how many years back in the day all the water we consumed we actually boiled first (time time waiting to boil, then cool, + all the fire fuel and processing wood, my god).

That being said, while we are camping I leave it out the whole trip. If its cold at night flirting with 0 deg I will bring the filter into the tent and wrap it in a jacket or sweater so it doesn't freeze. I transport to and home in the mesh bag it comes in, but I feel like that will break soon (on third filter now). Curious to see what other people do with this

we took in a couple last summer. They were VERY cautious and nervous. They had never been paddling and had obviously never "camped" outside of a canadian tire style drive into a 15x15 lot in a provincial park with your car beside you.

A few key things I took into this trip:
- small water so wind wouldn't be as big as an issue as it could be on bigger water
- close to put in incase of emergency to get out
- possibly still within cell range

But I wanted to give them the best experience I could. This meant atleast a small portage to get atleast somewhat "remote" if not by distance atleast by feel.

We put in #4 Rain Lake and went down the lake and portaged to Sawyer and stayed there for two nights. It actually was a perfect trip. Although to me it felt like it wasn't even time yet for a snack break, we had reached our destination. The lake was great, we were swimming all day. I got a leech on my foot lol. At the end of it all, they both said what an amazing time they had and how they can't wait to go next year on a bigger trip.

I brought my canoe and we rented a canoe for them in Kearney, so we got to avoid the whole show at Canoe etc.

I take this approach with whoever new we are going in with. I ask what they want to accomplish and what will make them feel safe. Then assess their skillset and plan something to fit so everyone has a good time. If someone is pushed too hard, is miserable, is not comfortable, they likely wont return.

Hi Barry,

Thank you for your efforts and everyone who has contributed to this. This is a tremendous resource. Although part of backcountry camping in Algonquin naturally feels "wrong" to see the sites in advance, I must admit I use this resource before embarking on any new lake, it really helps seeing the size of some lakes and which campsites to aim for.

Those 4-5 warm days followed by the 15mm of rain last night did wonders.  They made an announcement today that ice out is coming and that LOTR could be ice free within days. If I had to guess, I’d optimistically say that the park will open Friday April 28

Thanks for the intel.   Last year spring came early.
What’s anyone’s guess for ice out/ opening date this year based on the winter we have had?

this really spooks me out. I couldn't imagine being there on a site with my gf and then say 4 big dudes rolled in and forced us to move at 3am.
What is wrong with people. We go into the park to check out and escape this crap. Urrrg.

you can shoot a helix ice fishing transducer straight through the hull of a canoe, jump the sensitivity up a couple points and youre ready to rock.

I have done 3 in mazda 3 many times, have had to restrap canoe as well. Its bumpy. Take your time, its far from a paved road

I echo above, tim blows out big time when the dam gets jammed, we saw cars stranded, you really need something a size up to consider tim if the weather is anything but calm and sunny

I know the original question has since been answered but maybe helpful for anyone reading this that I have put my slogg115 through 7-8 trips now and it has been fantastic and no issues at all, and I haul on the straps pretty good sometimes. Never had water in. No issues with leaks, holes, wearing, etc.

I checked in at Kearney first time I have checked in since covid, since we were driving by on operating hours. I really enjoyed getting out early the last few trips since covid.

They told me it is not essential, but that they do prefer you to check in for more remote trips, and that they aren't so specific/fussy about #5/ 6 etc.

I can confirm I had this booked the other weekend and cancelled in advance. I spoke with the park and they said it will be closed for some time for rejuvenation. I was pumped to get this site booked and then it sucked it was closed but atleast we knew in advance and planned a new trip instead. I support closing it for what is necessary.
