Hey Ryan,

Brent is a pretty cool place.  It's like stepping back in time.

Assume that there is nothing there except wood, water and bugs, and you will be fine.  Like RC said, Brent Store has some supplies, but I don't think they sell bait and they certainly don't sell booze (Ontario is still stuck in the early 20th century when it comes to booze).  Your best bet is to come to Brent with everything you need, and then the cold coke and ice cream bar at Brent when you end your trip will be the greatest treat ever.  I would bring cash to be safe.

I've experienced a few sphincter-clenching crossings of Cedar.  The deceiving thing is that it rarely looks bad from the shore where you put in, but then when you are on the water past the point, it can get choppy.

But, that is much more of a concern in the spring.  If you are going in the summer and you are 3 canoes, just take it easy, stay together and you will be fine.  And, as EddyTurn said, just head for the Petawawa.  Hard to miss - you will hear it!

(I have also crossed when the lake was like glass, so you just never know of course)

That's cool.  Some good people out there.

All I found on my last trip was a LOT of old socks, hats, a pair of burned-out pants and a pair of panties.

Great read, as always.  Thanks for sharing.  This confirms what I thought - long river trips are not for me!

That's pretty cool UpTheCreek.  I've been to the Sand Lake area and Sec Lake specifically a ton of times with my kids and have never seen moose.  On the east side, we saw a moose on Travers once, and earlier this spring on Booth Lake near McCarthy Creek.  (Booth is a nice trip with kids; a decent adventure without it being too far and difficult)

+1 on thermarest brand.  I had a bad one (seam) and they replaced it.  They also fixed an old guidelite that I had kicking around - they found the leak that I could never find.

Appreciate a company that stands behind its products.  Thermarest (owned by Cascades Designs I think) is one such company.

hey DW, the 'cheater' trail to high falls is indeed about 3km/45mins from the parking lot that MartinG is referring to (parking lot is even signed from the road now, as 'Cheater Trail').  It's a nice walk.

Ya, bugs are really bad in AP right now.  I was out with my kids on Booth Lake Friday-Sat.  We were supposed to stay into Sunday but we pulled the chute early because the kids (and dog) were being eaten alive.  We had an open site.  The wind was very light, mind you.  Had the same experience as Garraty - in the evening, the black flies hitting the tent sounded like rain.  We had to bring the dog into the tent.

The lady at the Shall office says that bugs are as bad as she has ever seen them this time of year.  The dragonflies *just* hatched, so maybe this is simply a case of everything being a bit delayed due to late ice-out.

It's still manageable if you are prepared (bug nets, deet, etc.) though obviously much less pleasant, but I wouldn't bring kids or dogs.  Hopefully within a couple of weeks the black flies will be gone and the mozzies will be fewer.

While I did not have a thermometer when I was on the Ottawa river last weekend near Pembroke, I would say it's still balls-shrivelling cold, unless you manage to stay in the top 6 inches of water.  It's not dying cold though.  Have a fun trip!

+1 on el capitan.  Not light, not the coolest design, but it's durable and bombproof.  Never wet.  Ever.

Ya, that road is in rough shape.  You can normally get through in a car, but you gotta take it easy.  Park management doesn't seem to care about that road, presumably because it (and parking lot) is outside the park boundary.

In the spring you can run the portage from Allan to North Depot.  It's pretty tame water.  The other portages along the North River are not runnable.  On that route, perhaps paradoxically, I've always found that the most challenging portage is the very short one from Shoal Lk into Radiant.

Clamshell is a cool spot. Nice rushing water right next to the camp site.  Have fun!

I have wondered about this.  In the side- and off-seasons, the box makes sense, but in the summer season I would only do this if I had a reservation already, otherwise you run the risk of an 'overbooked' situation, especially on busy lakes?

Hi Shayne, I drove to Canoe Lake last weekend (Fri-Sun) via the East Gate.  There were workers out and about, and the road had gravel cut outs here and there, but if I recall correctly it was otherwise smooth sailing.
