PCI Now Has Petawawa River Sections

For those planning to paddle and camp on the Petawawa River this summer, I've set up the reservation system's 'Reservable Areas' (river sections) in upstream and downstream from Cedar Lake, on the PCI's list system .. along with a numbered map for each one. https://www.algonquinadventures.com/PCI/PCIindex.htm
However as of yet, there's no campsite reports to link to. So if you're going that way, please submit campsite reports.

Re: PCI Now Has Petawawa River Sections

If you're referring to the "rapids" campsites, almost all of them will be added in my next batch of campsite reports (within the next couple weeks). If you want to send me an email I'll share the campsite numbers I've already setup on my end.

Re: PCI Now Has Petawawa River Sections

Hi Cody

As you can see in the PCI, I've already listed, mapped and campsite-numbered the Reservation Areas. I'm hoping you can mesh your end to match! I chose to list them within associated sequences since most river-runs are "linear", not "alphabetical".

I'll be going over those Petawawa campsite reports you have in your list and will be doing my best to intergrate them into my 'river sections' listing and maps' campsite numberings.

Following Petawawa 'river-sections' go upstream from Cedar Lake (E to W)

Petawawa Stacks Rapids (RA 459) - Map
Petawawa Narrowbag Rapids (RA 460) - Map
Petawawa Catfish Rapids (RA 463) - Map
Petawawa Snowshoe Rapids (RA 466) - Map
Petawawa Cedar Rapids (RA 467) - Map

Portage 695m Cedar L. to Petawawa R.
Portage 300m on Petawawa R.
Portage 2345m on Petawawa R.
Portage 170m Petawawa R. to Narrowbag L.

Following Petawawa 'river-sections' go downstream from Cedar to Travers (W to E)

Petawawa Surprise Rapids (RA 414) - Map
Petawawa Plover Lake (RA 414) - Map
Petawawa Big Sawyer (RA 415) - Map
Petawawa Wagtail Rapids (RA 418) - Map
Petawawa Bypass Falls (RA 419) - Map
Petawawa Poplar Rapids (RA 420) - Map

Following Petawawa 'river-sections' go downstream from Travers(W to E)

Petawawa Thompson Rapids (RA 314) - Map
Petawawa Grillade Rapids (RA 315) - Map
Petawawa Crooked Chute (RA 316) - Map

Re: PCI Now Has Petawawa River Sections

Why is the PCI now a "paid" service? I had thought it was supposed to be community sourced?

Re: PCI Now Has Petawawa River Sections

The PCI is not a "paid" service.

Originally, the PCI evolved into an inventory of links to reports generated by the readership and Barry, plus Cody and Drew (located on their respective websites). Originally none of them were part of any "paid" service.

At a point in time, Cody decided to require payment for readers to access the reports on his website. Since links to those reports had already become part of the content of the PCI's inventory, I decided to make it clear that Cody's links required payment.

Simply put, the PCI is an inventory of "links", to which one owner of some of the associated "content" has "monetized" access.

NOTE: As of Feb. 21 of 2024, "paid membership" is required by AlgonquinBeyond.com to access its reports.
AlgonquinAdventures.com will still link to those reports, and will indicate the required membership by a "PM" at the end of each such link.

Re: PCI Now Has Petawawa River Sections

They are contrary to the spirit of this site. You should remove all the A&B submissions. Very quick and easy to do. Behind a paywall they offer no value to the membership here. Unless Cody is paying AA for the links they offer no benefit to AA either.

Re: PCI Now Has Petawawa River Sections

Cody put up his "pay wall" a full year ago and these are the first "complaints" I've received. The internet has evolved considerably since I started this website a quarter century ago and continued to evolve even over the decade-plus since I started the PCI. I believe my way of dealing with Cody's "paid membership" access, is a practical compromise. If you see the "PM" and don't want to subscribe, just don't click on that link. I find it interesting that direct submissions of campsite reports to the PCI have recently dropped off considerably. I imagine that's probably because of Cody attracting submissions by his payments for them. But I'm too old to get upset by that and I figure doing so would just be like shooting myself in my foot! I'd still like to see reports submitted here of portages. After all, the PCI is for portages too. And if any of you, who don't like the "PM" campsite reports, want to submit your own campsite reports here .. I'll be quite happy to receive them and add them directly to this website's content and the PCI.

Re: PCI Now Has Petawawa River Sections

Just looking at the first section, A - C, more than 50% are pay to play. Seems really silly for a community sourced project. So more than half the links are useless. 151 paid links vs 143 free links.

Re: PCI Now Has Petawawa River Sections

Just gave a critical eye to the fore-mentioned "A-C" list and observed a couple of things. Over the past decade, aside from those campsite report links originating from Cody's and Drew's websites, there's only PCI campsite submissions from a handful of our "community" .. a few from Wanda and myself .. and a considerable  number from the late Chris Taylor. I think it's fair to assume the same limited degree of community content probably exists throughout the entire PCI. While Cody is drawing in a good number of campsite report submissions from guests, he's also out there paddling-the-water and getting a lot of his reports himself. All I'm prepared to do is advise those who don't want to pay for the "PM" reports, is just don't click on those PCI links.

Re: PCI Now Has Petawawa River Sections

Let's hear it for Drew! Thanks for making all your reports accessible to anyone. I love clicking through and getting a sense of lakes, whether I'm headed there or not.

That's the kind of thing I love about this site, so please keep it up!

Re: PCI Now Has Petawawa River Sections

I want to start by saying I greatly appreciate everything this website has provided to the community over the years. AA has been an invaluable resource for me, thanks to the collective efforts of its contributors and the dedication behind maintaining the site.

That said, I find it concerning that Cody is using AA’s platform to drive traffic to paywalled content.  While Barry has taken a pragmatic stance, I wonder if it would be fair for Cody to contribute a portion of the revenue generated from AA referrals back to the site. I’m assuming AA, as a non-profit, still incurs costs (hosting, maintenance, etc.), and those of us who benefit from it—including those who profit from it—should consider giving back to help sustain it.

To be clear, I respect Cody’s right to run his site as he sees fit. But if AA is providing him with exposure and traffic, wouldn’t it be reasonable for some of that financial benefit to support the platform enabling it?

Just a thought.

Re: PCI Now Has Petawawa River Sections

I'm not going to lie, the fact that you need a paid membership to view some campsite reports has rubbed me wrong since day 1 - I agree that all these links should be taken off this website unless this website is directly getting paid per re-direct to his website just like any other ad on the internet. Camping is expensive enough as it is. Good for him at the same time for coming up with this, he definately has a good plan to make money more or less taking advantage of people who obviously want this information bad enough to pay.
I say all of us AA diehards use this as motivation to start recording more campsite information ourselves and upload on here for free access.

FWIW, I'm fine with people trying to make a $ on their work but question how it's promoted on a "community" site. Barry, I hope you are being compensated accordingly.

Re: PCI Now Has Petawawa River Sections

I believe the way I've dealt with the links is to present each viewer with a choice, clearly indicated on each link.
