Gloves for camping (not cold weather)

Whether crashing through the bush while portaging or cutting up firewood, keeping my hands free of scratches and other injuries just seems to be a smart thing to me - which means wearing gloves. But any searches I’ve tried, and complete scans of camping retailers’ inventories don’t seem to turn up anything like what I want. What I *want* is not warmth, but rather a pair of gloves that are light and thin and tough and with some degree of fire resistance (don’t want to melt a fingertip pushing a stick into a fire or my twig stove - which is what I just did to a pair of my running gloves).

Does something like that exist?

Buddy!

These are 3 or 4 bucks at Dollarama. Will easily last you an entire season. I use them for collecting wood, breaking branches, grabbing hot pots and even rearranging logs that are currently on fire.

Not overly heavy, just don't leave them out in the rain cause they can take a while to dry.. but thats the worst thing I can say about them...

Re: Gloves for camping (not cold weather)

Full shirt and pants are much more important in the bush. If you scratch you fingers walking the bush you probably won't be able to get your boat in there. Firewood is another story - almost any light and cheap gloves will suffice to keep your hands out of harms way.

Re: Gloves for camping (not cold weather)

I carry a pair of gloves similar to what Peek posted.  I'm pretty sure I got them at Costco, and it was a pack of about a dozen pairs.  Unfortunately, I just went to pick up another pack and they don't have them anymore.  They fold/roll up small, and you can manipulate hot coals/logs with them and hold a cast iron pan for a reasonable amount of time.  Home Depot seems to have something similar for less than $5 a pair.  Mine look quite similar to these, but I'm sure they weren't as expensive:  https://www.amazon.ca/BlackCanyon-Outfitters-71050-M3B-Economy/dp/B00AO19DKS/ref=sr_1_17?ie=UTF8&qid=1527637404&sr=8-17

I don't think I'd wear them portaging, but they protect my hands for everything else.  The gloves Costco has now are much bulkier as the are full leather gloves and not cloth on the top.  They are probably more comfortable, and could be worn more of the time.  I got them to do yard work, so I haven't had the chance to stick them in a fire yet.  They're similar to these: https://www.amazon.ca/OZERO-Leather-Cowhide-Working-Construction/dp/B072B9Z6NV/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1527637997&sr=8-4

Re: Gloves for camping (not cold weather)

@MartinG - LOL!  This is definitely my vote!

@Uppa - Have you tried looking at gardening gloves?  Also, probably not enough protection - But I wear Sea to Summit fingerless gloves when kayaking.  Very light weight, but also leather protection on palms.  This obviously wouldn't protect the ends of your fingers, but may be of some value depending on exactly what your looking for...

Re: Gloves for camping (not cold weather)

Currently I use a good quality leather work glove like this

Not this specific brand but of this sort. They have a nice snug fit which I find more comfortable especially when using them as canoeing gloves if I feel a blister forming. I've used leather biking gloves before as well.

Re: Gloves for camping (not cold weather)

In the past I have used a pair of carpenters gloves similar to what AT mentioned above. these days I just throw in a cheap pair of leather work gloves for around the fire and around camp and just paddle naked. (My hands that is).

Re: Gloves for camping (not cold weather)

You can search "mechanics gloves"  might find some options.  I have a light pair of wool gloves made by icebreaker that do the job if my hands start getting beat up.

Re: Gloves for camping (not cold weather)

I've found a simple pair of leather (or deerskin) gloves work great.  I will sometimes intentionally soak them so that I can handle hot pots or even burning logs without concern (for very short time fire adjustment, not toting them around the camp).  We discovered that benefit after a rainy day when the gloves were soaked by rain.  During the day I will sometimes wear them for a long paddle and definitely use them gathering firewood.

I've recently switched to the cloth gloves with the rubberized palm/finger coating around the house and do like their toughness/economy but I wouldn't want to use the rubbery stuff to grab something hot.

Re: Gloves for camping (not cold weather)

How about a pair of cut resistant kitchen gloves.

Cheap, light and you certainly wont get cut or scratched with them on.

Re: Gloves for camping (not cold weather)

I keep a pair of lined work gloves in the food barrel. Originally these came along for spring trips. Given a good spray of canvas waterproofing they work really well in the spring with cold water, snow, slush, etc. That led to the realization that they also work really well when cooking on the fire and/or picking up hot pots and pans off the fire so now they get used all season.
