Re: 2018 Ice Out Predictions?

Lake Nosbonsing is nearly ice free. The part I saw tonight was all slush, no solid ice left.  Nosbonsing isn't that far from Kiosk or Manitou.

Is the ice out now?

It was freezing/below freezing last night, so it's unlikely the lakes finished clearing overnight. I think we're looking at another 2-3 days for ice-out.

Just yesterday May 14th had 35-45mm of rain predicted. Today it looks beautiful, yes - but don't count on that just yet

(Also heading in May 14th, not just randomly staring at weather forecasts).

What's your access point?

Re: 2018 Ice Out Predictions?

Just back from a bikepacking trip with a fat bike, north of APP. Weather was spectacular, with highs around 15-18C and lows of -2 to -5C. Ice was 3' from shore on Saturday and 6' from shore by Sunday. 1/4" crust forming on the lake every night though.

Driving back south on Monday, there was a huge change compared to Friday with a lot of ice disappearing. May 11th looks really good, I'd be surprised if it's not open then.

Ice on Gauvreau lake:

On the way there, two guys were walking on ice with canoes on Mattawa River (Pimisi Bay)... Very odd and not safe.

Glad you had a good trip!
Look back a couple pages in this thread, I posted a picture of the guys on Pimisi. The canoes were rented from Algonquin North, they ran the Mattawa from Pimisi to Mattawa on Sunday when you seen them.

New Modis Image! Things have progressed exponentially since yesterday's.

Re: 2018 Ice Out Predictions?

Amazing the difference! And we have another 20 degree day tomorrow and rain Thursday. Ice out is looking more like a reality by Friday.

Now we just need the roads in to behave! haha Hopefully the damage isn't too bad.

Re: 2018 Ice Out Predictions?

Looks to me like Cedar is the worst of the holdouts at this point. Opeongo is going very quickly!

Re: 2018 Ice Out Predictions?

Just booked 3 nights on my gem Brook Trout lake, couldn't be more excited ! Heading out Sunday May 13- Wednesday May 16, 2018. Couple of info updates for you guys:

1. I was driving up and down Brent Road and Bissett Creek Road Sunday. Bissett Creek Road is in decent shape, few ruts and very minor washouts but accessible even in a car. Brent Road, not so much. Even a capable pick up truck would have difficulties on Sunday.

2.Cedar still is holding onto its ice worse than any other lake in the park now, which is kind of surprising. Plus Brent Road is not accessible. HOWEVER, Modis satellite shows all the lakes on the Brent road and area making pretty fast progress, so im pretty sure Cedar will be good to go by the weekend.

3. I spoke to a couple friends at the Brent Permit Office, and the logging authorities and road maintenance crews are in the process of working on the Brent Road for opening Friday. As of now, Brent is still planning to open Friday, which I think will happen. They seem to do pretty good work on that road every spring getting it up and running. Hopefully Cedar Lake sheds its ice shortly though.

Cheers everyone, very exciting that trout opener is almost upon us! Now for a cold beer!

Sean

Re: 2018 Ice Out Predictions?

My group has a water taxi booked to take us up to the north end of Opeongo early on the morning of Friday May 11th to start a five day trip. With only approximately 60 hours between now and then, how totally screwed are we?

Also, I've been googling around a bit for this MONDIS(?) satellite imagery, but have not been able to find a source for current, or at least recently updated imagery of the park. Can anyone share a link to this? Would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

Re: 2018 Ice Out Predictions?

Today's photo is not very clear, but you can see Opeongo is getting darker...
Just google EOSDIS Worldview or here's a link to today's photo:

You can check this one too.   https://coastwatch.glerl.noaa.gov/modis/modis.php?region=g&page=1&template=sub&image=t1.18128.1538.CIS_Great_Lakes.143.250m.jpg

I think you'll be fine,  maybe get delayed a few hours while they confirm the ice is out.

Re: 2018 Ice Out Predictions?

Confirmed opening May 11th... but Opeongo not until the 15th:

http://www.algonquinpark.on.ca/news/ice-out.php

Algonquin Park Canoe Routes

As of May 8, 2018, many lakes are still ice covered, but it is anticipated that most lakes will be navigable by May 11, 2018. Park visitors that decide to continue with their existing reservation should expect to be potentially re-routed due to lingering ice on some lakes and bays. Based on current conditions, Lake Opeongo will remain closed due to ice until May 15, 2018 and therefore all reservations originating from that access point will be contacted directly by reservation staff to provide options
