Thanks for the Brent Road photo update PhillyPhister... I've shared it on our AO Brent Facebook page with a link to this post to give you credit.

Re: 2018 Ice Out Predictions?

Satellite seems to be showing a lot of open water. Too late for me but hope the park allows access soon. Should not have to wait until Friday. Happy paddling/fishing/hiking everyone!

Lake Opeongo photos captured this morning (May 7th 2018) by Austin Bonvivere, Store Manager of Algonquin Outfitters Lake Opeongo Store. #IceOut2018.

Our Lake Opeongo BloomSky weather camera is off line currently but I'm heading out tomorrow to try to fix it and capture some more photos from various lakes in Algonquin Park.

I'll post our full report here and share photos and maybe even more video on our social media channels.

Re: 2018 Ice Out Predictions?

I think they'll take a wait and see approach. I was sitting at the Opeongo docks a few years ago waiting (with the OO water taxi) for someone to do the fly over before getting the green light.  Three hours later we were on our way.  A lot of outfitters have stake in this as well.

Re: 2018 Ice Out Predictions?

I don't know folks, I think we're going to have to pick up the pace if we want to hit 400 posts before the Opeongo is officially declared open water.

As nice as that satellite picture looks, if you move straight down from Opeongo, it doesn't look like Rock & Pen are entirely open yet either. Usually they open up as much as a week before Opeongo, although I expect that this year they will open up a lot closer together.

Re: 2018 Ice Out Predictions?

This is from the Kiosk Access point early this morning :

Carmen said it was well below freezing last night so it looked pretty white this morning, I bet its black after the sun today.

Dottie lake outside of the park still had ice today.

Re: 2018 Ice Out Predictions?

Lake Nosbonsing is nearly ice free. The part I saw tonight was all slush, no solid ice left.  Nosbonsing isn't that far from Kiosk or Manitou.

It was freezing/below freezing last night, so it's unlikely the lakes finished clearing overnight. I think we're looking at another 2-3 days for ice-out.

Just yesterday May 14th had 35-45mm of rain predicted. Today it looks beautiful, yes - but don't count on that just yet

(Also heading in May 14th, not just randomly staring at weather forecasts).

What's your access point?

Re: 2018 Ice Out Predictions?

Just back from a bikepacking trip with a fat bike, north of APP. Weather was spectacular, with highs around 15-18C and lows of -2 to -5C. Ice was 3' from shore on Saturday and 6' from shore by Sunday. 1/4" crust forming on the lake every night though.

Driving back south on Monday, there was a huge change compared to Friday with a lot of ice disappearing. May 11th looks really good, I'd be surprised if it's not open then.

Ice on Gauvreau lake:

On the way there, two guys were walking on ice with canoes on Mattawa River (Pimisi Bay)... Very odd and not safe.
