Trip Planning » McIntosh Lake Non-Island Campsites... » 2/13/2016 8:12 pm

I spent 2 night on McIntosh last year - 1 near Ink - I think the 3rd site up the shoreline and 1 night near the entry to the creek. The first site was protected - which was good since I was getting cold when I got off the water - the second site had a great sunning rock. My impression was a number of nice sites on the lake.

On our long trip last summer we took an outback oven and a cast iron dutch oven. We make bannock and regular (yeast rising) bread in the outback. Love it - worth it. The dutch oven we use for lots of meals - 2 person size was perfect.

I live on the southeast corner of the park - the ice is sketchy - people do not have their ice huts out - it isn't safe around here yet.

I have read several of his books -'got it for 20$ a few months ago - it was interesting - parts of it were really good, parts of it were okay.

Maybe tell us what you normally eat on canoe trips?

Equipment » Kobo and Charger » 1/24/2016 4:13 pm

Hi Rob

The H2O does look interesting - just debating cost vs basic model - I took my ereader on a 23 day trip last year - so if I can get a Kobo that suits and recharges I think it would be better than the iPhone - but only if I can recharge it.

Equipment » Kobo and Charger » 1/23/2016 7:48 pm

Hi Rob,

See if I am going to buy an eReader I want it to work withthe battery pack - my iPhone and inReach both work with the battery pack - so if it does not I may just give up on an ereader and use the phone - the ereaders have a much longer battery life so I was thinking it would be worth bringing IF I can recharge it with the battery pack.

Equipment » Kobo and Charger » 1/23/2016 6:26 pm

I have a Sony ereader. It does not have wifi and I think I need to replace it as I am having issues downloading books. So I am thinking of a Kobo. We use a Goal Zero solar panel and battery pack. The battery pack would charge everything else (iPhone, inReach) but it would not charge the Sony eReader.

So I am looking for recommendations about which Kobo I should buy and if the Kobo can be charged by the Goal Zero battery pack. I just do not know if I should buy the cheapest model or if some of the added features of more expensive models are worth the money?

Equipment » Nova Craft Tough Stuff and Whitewater Wraps? » 1/16/2016 4:27 pm

Hi Everyone,

I'm interested in what fellow Algonquin whitewater trippers think about this video: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=cXsXRcRgD6Q. My last Algonquin whitewater trip was in a Royalex boat and I suspect my next one will be as well. Eventually, however, I will probably buy a tripping boat and paddle the Petawawa in a boat made out of another material because as many of you know, Royalex - which many of our whitewater tripping boats are made out of - is no longer available. Nova Craft has come out with this new material and one of the big questions is how does it handle a wrap? Personally, I am a fan of NC - just still figuring out what I think of this material.

I am curiuos what other trippers with more experience with wraps think about what they have learned about this material's ability to handle wraps so far (either from this video or other sources of information). I guess I was hoping to see a bit more detail regarding the wrap - I am less concerned about how it handles being dropped, etc. My only first hand experience with wraps is where we have intentionally wrapped Royalex boats and I have a boat that was wrapped by someone else - which still has reasonable integrity. Anyways, curious what others think?

Coming from Ottawa why not Achray? It has some very easy portage options.

Equipment » Which of these Tents?? » 1/11/2016 7:30 pm

AT - the Gearswap is what they do with things that have some damage or blemish (even if minor/only cosmetic) or if it was a 'sample.' For things that are basically new but have been returned they put them back on the rack with a discount. We have bought a silnylon tarp and a Thermarest cot this way - they were both 20-30% off and there was nothing wrong with them - but someone had bought & returned them - I always check at MEC to see if something on my wish list has a discounted version.

When we needed to get the cot replaced because we were unhappy with the wear we payed the difference and got a new one.

Equipment » Which of these Tents?? » 1/11/2016 4:52 pm

If all the tents were marked down then it probably was an error - if only a few of the tents were marked down it probably was not an error - we have bought many things from MEC that were discounted because MEC has previously sold them and had them returned - the only 'catch' is that if you want a warranty, MEC only allows its 'rock solid guarantee' on items at full price - so if you buy it as discounted or on clearance MEC makes you pay the difference to get a replacement under warranty.

What about the MSR Elixir 3? MEC sells it and it is in the same price range. I would agree with the comments about the Volt - we do actually have a 4 person tent that is all mesh for the summer and used it on a 23 day trip last summer - I sleep cold, my OH sleeps hot - so it was perfect - I brought my second coolest bag (rather than my coolest bag) - so if it was a cooler night between OH's body heat, our dog's body heat and my sleeping bag I was good - but I would not want it to be our only tent - We have a different 4 person tent for the shoulder seasons.

Equipment » solo canoe? » 1/10/2016 7:54 am

I've considered going to a15' tandem to have a permanent yoke and the only thing that has held me back (other than trying to find one used and money) is the question of packing. When I've looked at 15' I'm concerned that if I added a kneeling thwart that I would need to pull out a tandem seat to fit my dog and gear - but that may be a uniquely me issue.

Equipment » solo canoe? » 1/09/2016 11:59 am

Its all relative - I'm 5'6" and paddle a Shearwater - it is a big solo but much narrower than a tandem - it is long and handles big water and big loads well - I use it on large bodies of water and on smaller bodies of water with a dog. Not for everyone but I really like my Shearwater

Sell and Swap » FS NRS 107 L Bill's Bag Backpack » 1/05/2016 6:27 pm

Hi Everyone,

I have a red NRS Bill's Bag. You can google it to see reviews. I can send pics if you are interested. It is located in Petawawa, Ontario. The bag is made out of waterproof material. It is double reinforced on the bottom. The material is awesome. It is much more puncture resistant/tough than my MEC bags. It has a backpack set of straps and a sternum strap, no hip belt. I am selling it because we have too many bags. 75$

Thanks for looking.

Christine
