Trip Planning » Lake Travers drive time » 7/19/2016 7:46 am

Not sure about the road leading into Travers but the logging trucks have started back up on my road (which is a road coming out of the park). They started back up this week and have been pretty steady. I can hear them driving down the road as I type. So do be cautious out there.

Equipment » Tent Recommendations » 7/17/2016 4:25 pm

We camped in a 4 person backpacking (not 4 person car camping) tent last summer for 23 days in Algonquin and had no trouble finding sites that were already present - but I would not want to go bigger than that. Personally I would recommend between 2 and 4 person tents - unless you have some real solitary types on your trip (who need their own solo tents).

Campsite Cooking » Dehydrated and dry food vs real food » 7/17/2016 4:08 pm

We tend to bring mostly homemade dehydrated with a bit of other stuff (eggs, bacon, cheese, etc).

I think this is a very personal decision. I take an inReach on solos and text my other 1/2 at least twice a day - I don't find it takes away from the experience - we sometimes take the cell phone - I like it as a camera - I can see using it for reading. I think a lot of it has to do with how one uses it and how one defines getting away from it all.

Trip Planning » Can I still call it the Brent Run? » 7/09/2016 8:34 pm

I would call it th Brent Run no matter the speed - to me it is a route in the park - Kevin C calls it the Brent Run in his book and recommends 8-10 days suggesting with humour not to expect a crowd cheering after doing it in the worst time in history.

For me carrying these things is like carrying an inReach - may never need them but prefer to have them.

Trip Planning » Recommendation for a First-Time Solo Trip » 6/21/2016 4:46 pm

I take Mojo on solos but it is a lot more work so definately worth thinking about. My first solo was Achray after I was familiar with the route. Nothing worse than being in the bush and the only group you've seen in hours is a group of guys who made you nervous - so my suggestion is start with a route that has people on it like Achray, Canoe, Smoke, etc.

Equipment » Bear Bangers or Spray » 6/21/2016 4:22 pm

I carry both. Have seen bears in AP not been charged but close enough that I had my stuff ready if they came any closer. Neither weigh too much and I could see choosing one over the other depending on situation (wind, how open the area between me and the bear is, how fast the bear is moving, how much time I have, etc.) Figure it is worth having if I ever need it.

Trip Planning » Dogs in Algonquin? » 6/20/2016 5:52 pm

Also Mojo loves canoeing and is good on trips - but just like kids - he has bad days - once 1/2 way across Smoke Lake I told him if he didn't settle I was taking him home and going without him. Another time he pulled so hard he flipped me with a barrell on my back. Once we had to wade a river because he was afraid of the bridge.  The day I miscalculated and went too far on the last portage it took some coaxing to get him in for the last paddle. But I never regretted bringing him.

Trip Planning » Dogs in Algonquin? » 6/20/2016 5:42 pm

I bring our dog but he is ALWAYS on leash. My pet peeve is dog owners who can't follow simple rules. It isn't just about how your dog acts. On our 23 day trip last year we had our dog on leash on our site. A little dog jumped out of someone's canoe swam to our site and started barking at our dog. Mojo was 'off' for the next 21 days - he wasn't bad but he was upset and worried because of this yappy dog. So yes this dog did something it should not have but that owner truly impacted our next month and had no idea. We also ran into a dog off leash with an owner who did not bring a leash. The dog barked at Mojo on the first trip and for the next 3 passes I had our dog sitting off the trail (with a canoe on my head on one pass) while the owner dragged his dog past us. I always pull off to let others pass when we have our dog - no matter what I am carrying - canoe, huge pack, etc because I have no way of knowing how they feel about dogs. Often people will ask to pet him and say not to step aside for them on the next pass. I appreciate it but do not expect it. So yes your dog needs to be on leash.

Can you tell us about your bug net?

Campsite Cooking » Cheese » 6/16/2016 6:39 pm

Babybell is not as good as more expensive waxed cheese in my experience

Trip Planning » Bug Report » 5/16/2016 6:52 am

I don't know about setting them back but it is still pretty cold on the south-east corner of the park so I do not anticipate the swarms until it warms up a bit.

Trip Planning » Car Shuttle Between Access Points » 2/27/2016 11:14 am

Some of the suggested shuttles in Kevin C's books are a good deal. We did the math on a shuttle for the Mattawa River. When we considered the cost of driving 2 cars to Mattawa plus parking in North Bay it was a nobrainer to pay for a shuttle.

Trip Planning » Car Shuttle Between Access Points » 2/27/2016 11:03 am

Like Martin, I am sure AO has their insurance up to par. From experience in other industries I suspect if there was an accident, your insurance would kick in first (as most insurance policies allow for others over a certain age to drive your vehichle with your permission) and then theirs would kick in if yours did not cover it all.

In terms of shuttles, commercial ones are going to be expensive because it costs a lot to run a shuttle and their goal is to make money. When we have done our own shuttles and it is time intensive and still expensive enough - so it comes down to cost vs time. Last year we started at Kiosk and came out at Opeongo. We got someone to pick us up in our vehicle (if we had not found a friend to do this we would have had to drive to Opeongo and arrange to leave the car there which would have been another day). Then we drove to Kiosk in our other car. The day after we got picked up at Opeongo, we drove back to Kiosk to get the other car. So we saved some money but still had the cost of gas for the second drive up and the time invested.

Fitness » Danger of mixing alcohol and outdoor winter activities » 2/14/2016 12:09 pm

At my most recent WFR we were told that layers is the way to go for sleeping - as for the alcohol thing - I do not take any on solo trips - this is one reason - I just figure dehydration, waking up under the weather - there is less room for error while solo - on trips with my OH we enjoy a drink once off the water if we are warm, dry and properly hydrated.
