Let's lighten it up a bit. What's the consensus on worms?

Question - why does the Swedish Pimple want EGB Blinkers?

That was great, Dave. I, too, was set for a short trip starting the 25th - first in 3 years. The second I set foot out of the office to start my vacation, I got that ominous tickle in the back of my throat - out of commission for a week and had to cancel.

If that cow had slicked her ears back you would've been in some serious trouble. Good to not let it get to that stage.

Just tried again and now it's a blank page. Weird. I'm an IT professional and this was not local cache related - I re-downloaded the kmz file just this morning. Perhaps the hosting service just forgot to suspend the account and our activity alerted them.

A quick 2 nights on St. Andrews arriving the 25th. Should be stellar - I'll be tipping a flask in the Eureka No Bug Zone.

Honestly the "stewardship" option (coming soon) doesn't look half bad: $5K for 500 acres, 10x10 cabin size limit, and up to 8 guests. People pay way more than $700 each for that kind of hunting territory over here. The 60 acres I rent for deer costs me $400 a year.

Wouldn't that be looking mostly east? An evening shot would have to be looking west.

It looked like the sun was over the viewer's left shoulder - note that the higher ground in the distance is awash in sunlight.

Maybe someone can corroborate...

I find that specks in rivers, at the right time of year (ice-out to end of June) are ravenous. If there's a fish there it will bite. In lakes/calm bodies, much less so. You could be fishing for an hour with nary a nibble, and then bam - supper bell rings and one after the other.

Somewhere between the 2 is my favourite: early evening, just before sundown, fishing a deep woods beaver pond with a bobber, a flask, and a smoke.

Trip Planning » Possibility of Site-specific Reservations and Increased Fees » 2/27/2022 8:00 pm

In La Verendrye, only specific sites are reserved specifically. The vast majority are first come, first served with the condition that anyone could should up and stay as long as the site has capacity. In other words, the site isn't "yours."

I would disagree that the entire park reservation system should be retooled to accommodate those with disabilities. Don't misunderstand me - I'm 100% for supporting equal inclusion and opportunities for everyone - but the vast majority of the Algonquin interior requires portaging. Often lengthy, rocky, rooty and hilly portages. Suggesting that site-specific bookings are necessary because someone's disability wouldn't allow them access to certain campsites is a little absurd if they have to navigate 4 kilometers of portages to reach that lake to begin with. If they can do the portages, the campsites will not be an obstacle. If they can't do the portages, the reservation system doesn't need to be revamped.

Which brings us back to AlgonquinLakes' suggestion - which I doubt would ever happen as much as anyone else - that a hybrid solution would be the most appropriate. Make a distinction between the access point lakes and the rest of the interior, and it may be the best of both worlds.

Or are you suggesting that your protected rights extend to the park needing to build and maintain cart-trail-quality portages throughout its entire interior?

I don't think anyone here is suggesting paved cart paths throughout the park with rope barriers blocking off danger areaa a la Disney World Uppa...there are a few here who are advocating for no accomodations and ZERO changes to the status quo that works perfectly fine for them yet completely ignores other stakeholders and points of view

I think the point is that some site-specific reservations would help those with access limitations, those with younger children, and larger parties with 3 tents etc...and that those "accomodations" outweigh the entitlement of those that want the flexibility to camp on whatever lake they want, whether they've booked it or not...put simply, it's about responsibility, rights and reasonable accomodations vs self-serving entitlement and privilege

Indeed

The park is a bit like Disney World in a lot of areas. What could be an arduous journey for the client could be easily accomplished via one of the many roads accessible only by park staff. I don't think it's okay to write off a portion of the population because they have a disability when accommodating them affects only one's perception of isolation.

Trip Planning » Fly Rod exclusive » 2/10/2022 6:31 am

Actually, for really tight spots a fly rod with a spinning reel would not be a bad combination. Pendulum casting a lightly weighted worm (the horror!) with a long pole gets you into those holes between boulders and behind logs.
