Whoops, I missed your reply @Bampot.
Re: Dec 1 - March 31: We camped on Longspur once for example. We took the portage to Jack Lake and then headed through the bush from there.

They aren't obligated to issue permits on any particular date (just like they frequently don't issue permits for a few weeks in the spring), but between those dates if you are issued a permit you're required to camp away from designated campsites.
The nice thing is that opens up all sorts of additional locations to camp that you couldn't otherwise use =)

From O. Reg. 347/07: PROVINCIAL PARKS: GENERAL PROVISIONS:
“Between December 1 and March 31, no person shall camp within 30 metres of the nearest portage or shoreline,
(a) in an area operated for interior camping in Algonquin Provincial Park”
Trip Planning » Craig creek/access So3? » 7/26/2023 1:41 am |
Craig Creek is often so dry, even in the spring, that you can't paddle and need to wade instead. I'm dropping it from my new map as a result.
1b is a much better plan. There is a parking area left of the main road, just before the bridge. Then, at the bridge you put in and paddle into the park.
Let me know if you have any more questions =)
Trip Planning » crown lake to ragged lake, crown bay trail?? » 7/18/2023 9:21 am |
The water level shouldn't matter on the Crown Lake side, but it definitely matters on the Ragged side. We went in October 2013 and the water was *very* low in Crown Bay.
To find the portage from Crown Lake, we headed down to the end of the bay as marked on my map. We then bushwhacked 10-20m from the lake to the trail. From that point the trail was pretty easy to follow.
To be a bit more specific about the bushwhack, there was no evidence of the trail at the shoreline. However, I got out of the canoe, crossed the creek, and very shortly thereafter I picked up the trail.
The trail was clear and obvious to the road, then we headed west along the road. Soon we saw flagging on our right side which marked a 'trail' down to Crown Bay. It had clearly been used before, but the forest was quite open there so it was not as if you needed to stick to that one particular path. I just wanted to so I could GPS it.
I have since heard that the area was logged, and I know that Peek mentioned there was blowdown along the trail from Crown Lake to the road (though he *was* able to locate the trail).
Hope that helps!!

@Jdbonney I don’t believe there is any association. That said, I’m not sure exactly how things went down.
Trip Planning » Lady-Slipper Lake - Campsite still unlocatable? » 4/14/2023 3:10 pm |
That campsite was actually officially closed a few years ago (really, just a formality since nothing chanced after my previous map). This is not the only situation where you can reserve a campsite that does not exist - I assume that no one thought to update the reservation system after the change.

Swift Fifteen is not the only person who's let me know that they haven't seen any roaches at that site, but I've heard from a few people recently - in fact someone actually PMed me a week ago - who have seen them there. I have not seen them personally, but I've only stayed at that particular site once.
I looked into it a bit more a few years ago, because I got a couple of reports re: a couple of sites in Killarney as well. Like Peek pointed out, they aren't actually cockroaches but rather are another related species. My best guess is that they're transient - I'm not sure if it's a seasonal thing, or what.
Nonetheless I'm not adding a note about them to the new map. I'm convinced that even if they're there sometimes, its intermittent and unpredictable. As well, it surely must affect more than that one site. In the past I included anecdotes like that, but I'm trying to shy away from that going forward (i.e. unless there's a clear reason that only one site is affected, I don't think it's useful to call one site out because that's all the info I have)
Trip Planning » Access Point #1 and 1a » 4/04/2023 3:48 pm |
@IanTendy since #1 is located outside the park, I don't believe there are fees for additional vehicles. That should apply to all other accesses outside the park too (e.g. Tim, Hay, etc).
Definitely in the case of Hay (and I assume in the case of K'mog too) the accesses are located at public boat launches and are also used by people not accessing the park.

FYI that's his old address. If someone actually wants to pursue him though (i.e. small claims) I'd be happy to share what I know, but very frustratingly the costs involved are much higher than what people lost. That's what let him get away with it for so long.
I'm very happy that's he's *finally* stopped though. I think Shopify (they provided the web store) banned him, but I'm not 100% on that.

Sorry all, but I purposefully didn’t share that version publicly.
As an aside, @ScratchyPants, I would kindly request that folks PM me directly for copies of my map. Long story short, the copyright info is wrong on the version that is floating around. It incorrectly indicates that the map is ©️Jeff’s Map Ltd, but I never transferred my ©️ to the company and instead own it personally. I’m also happy to share additional info with anyone who gets in touch, including info about known errors/changes.
Thanks so much for understanding! =)
Fishing » Update on availability of lake depth charts? » 3/05/2023 6:29 pm |
I heard from Greg around Christmas time, and as it turns out, I actually just talked to Stephen a few days ago.
Stephen told me he doesn't have any hard copy books left and is low on laminated maps. If anyone needs his email address to contact him, just PM me. I have his permission to share it with anyone who wants to contact him about his depth maps.

Trip Planning » Portages Off Opeongo » 2/24/2023 11:00 am |
@Martin It's certainly possible. Here's a screenshot from the MNR's 1970 map showing that portage. It doesn't show it starting from that far south, but at the same time I still wouldn't rule it out. Another future exploration perhaps =)
@Bampot He's using the Avenza app, but unfortunately that version is no longer available. Sorry about that.
Trip Planning » Portages Off Opeongo » 2/23/2023 3:46 pm |
Woo, thanks Martin!
That's very good to know about the White Gull route. Of all of the historic routes on my map, that was one I thought might still exist in some form. That said, I struggle to remember what gave me that impression. It's been over 50 years since the park maintained a portage through there and honestly I can't imagine it was ever very popular, so in hindsight that makes sense. It's nice to get definitive answer on the current state of that route =)
