That sounds like you're conceding defeat to me.
(But yeah, if you're doing the link next year I'd join for sure)

The meanest link is probably the most canoe-biased route in the entire park. It's not the total length of the portages (68km), but how many tiny little portages there are along the route, which means I spend more time packing/unpacking than I do portaging.
But Martin: I'd still kick your ass. Bring it.

5 days? Am I doing it twice?

Camping isn't, and should never be, a race. But I understand why you'd try to switch the race to pedal boats, because solo canoe versus solo kayak is a recipe for you getting smoked.

Well yeah, that's the impact of peer pressure when everyone does something the same way. It's easy to start thinking that's the only way you can be, and it takes courage to step out of the mold.
I believe in you Martin - you'll get there.

It’s okay Martin - I long ago came to understand that you’re a closeted kayaker. You desperately want to come out but just aren’t... quite... ready. And so until the day you’re ready, you’ll slag kayaks at every opportunity.
On behalf of the kayak camping community, we’ll be here for you when you're finally break free of your canormative constraints.

The trouble with asking for opinions is that even experienced campers are going to have twenty different ones, especially about something as personal as the boat you paddle.
I really appreciate all the feedback in this thread. I still have no idea what I'm going to end up buying, but I'll be test paddling everything I can this season to figure it out, then likely going to the outdoor adventure show to get a good deal next February.
Thanks folks!

Also, memory cards are dirt cheap even at larger sizes. If you're going to do a lot of filming, especially in higher resolutions, don't get too stingy on what you buy. I've maxxed out a 128 gb card on a camping trip before. Two of my cameras have 128 gb cards, the other has a 256 gb card, and I bring a spare 64 gb card as an emergency backup.
Edit: 256 GB Samsung EVO UHS-1 - $67:

Not being able to change batteries would be a total deal breaker for me. Seems like a massive d**k move by GoPro that you have to buy the Black just to be able to put in a fresh battery.

The latter. There are always people who end up where they shouldn't be, whether due to weather, injury, or just the jerks who think they can ignore where they're booked because they found a nice site elsewhere. Plus imagine having to paddle the length and breadth of some of the larger lakes trying to find the one available campsite if it could be fully booked. So the booking system is designed with some leeway in mind, so nobody (in theory) ends up on the lake they're supposed to be on and can't find any available sites.

I hate to say it, but you're not likely going to be camping in Algonquin on May 3rd this year. But to answer the question, a wetsuit and water shoes. Yes, his feet might get cold stepping in and out at portages, but you're stepping out into shallow water at worst, and it's not going to be all that cold. Or a wetsuit and neoprene socks I suppose, but personally speaking I don't want to take the time to switch between those and my shoes on both sides of a portage.
Chest/hip waders sounds super dangerous to me. What happens if you dump into the lake? You'd be too heavy to ever get back into your boat or even try to swim for shore.

I used a Spot (Gen2) for many years and was happy with it. But after my daughter was born, I found myself wanting two-way communication instead of just one-way, and having the ability to write anything I wanted instead of just pre-defined messages. I'd say both of those could be important to you one day, being able to identify exactly what's going on.
Anyway, I picked up an inReach mini at the start of last camping season, and I've been very happy with it. For full functionality you'll want to bring a smartphone along on your trips (I always do anyway), as it would be a pain in the behind typing up messages on its tiny little interface. Last July I even used it to arrange an earlier water taxi pickup!

I had a GoPro once upon a time (Hero3 black I think). I don't know if it's still the case with new GoPros, but the reason I eventually got rid of it is because it was a camera wrapped in a waterproof housing, not an actual waterproof camera. The result was terrible sound quality.
If you're not planning on taking video (or if you won't care about the audio), or if they've since fixed that problem, then disregard.
I take two waterproof cameras on my trips. For the last few years it's been two Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS5 cameras, and I've been reasonably happy with them. While they're 'waterproof', I wouldn't recommend using them underwater as it results in the lens fogging up until you let it bake in the sun for a few hours.
This year I've replaced one of them with an Olympus Tough TG-Tracker, which is a wide angle waterproof ... camera? I hesitate to say camera, as it's mostly designed for wide-angle video. As I haven't used it on a camping trip yet, I can't yet give an opinion. Olympus also has the Olympus Tough TG-5, which is their true 'camera' waterproof option. It reviews very well, but I've never used one.
