Two years ago we had a similar, but far less hostile, experience on Travers. A couple approached our site in the evening looking for site "313". I explained the story about reserving the lake not the site and pointed them to some sites that were open. They thanked us and paddled away. I wonder if the new website not showing the number of permits per lake adds to the confusion for first timers?

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) has announced that the current restricted fire zone which applies to all zones in the fire region of Ontario, will be lifted effective Saturday, May 16 at 12:01 am.

What do you use to protect your hands when cooking over an open campfire? (rag, cotton gloves, split leather gloves, silicon/Kevlar BBQ gloves, welding gloves, etc).
I have been using cheapo split leather work gloves but if I'm not careful I burn my finger when picking up a hot pot handle. I am considering getting a pair of "BlueFire" gloves as an upgrade.

That's them. Although I haven't installed them yet (they were already installed on the canoe by the outfitter) all that is required is tightening 4 wingnuts. I think I can handle that

After having the opportunity to try them on a 8 day trip in Woodland Caribou PP, I purchased some "Superior Deluxe Cordura Portage Pads". They are incredibly comfortable, I don't know why anyone would waster their money on a regular yoke pad like the ones you find at MEC. Not once did my shoulders or neck get sore.

You may think I'm crazy but here it goes. I've got a trip planned for WCPP this year and was struggling with what to do with my feet on those cold/wet days on non-groomed portages and water entries to the canoe. I settled on a pair of amphibious shoes that will drain/dry quickly along with a pair of knee high Sealskinz socks. The socks are 100% waterproof as long as the water stays below my knees and they are extremely warm and comfortable with a merino wool inner layer. I plan to try this out this spring in APP.

Hi Folks,
I'm looking for a new frying pan for my next adventure but I am having a tough time finding "the right one". Depending on the day, I bounce between a $10 Walmart frying pan, $70 Non-Stick Titanium Keith and everything in between. Ideally I am looking for 8-10", non-stick, folding handle and lightweight. I plan to use the pan to cook pancakes, bacon, eggs, veggies, fish, etc over both a stove and an open fire. Any suggestions? What do you use? Thanks in advance.

I just got back from a weekend trip to Booth Lake with my two boys and friend with his two boys. It was the first backcountry trip for the boys and it couldn't have gone better.
During the controlled chaos of the portage from Kitty to Booth Lake, I forgot that I had left the safety kit at the stern of the canoe. When flipping the canoe on to my shoulders the kit fell out. It wasn't until we made it to our campsite that I had realized it was gone and where I had left it. On the way out we were hoping to spot it hanging from a tree but no luck. With my tail between my legs, I explained to the lady at Algonquin Bound what I had done and happily paid the $15 for a replacement. When I got back to Ottawa, there was a message on my phone from Algonquin Bound saying that someone had turned in the safety kit and that they were going to refund me the replacement cost.
I want to thank the person who found the kit and returned it and to Algonquin Bound for making the effort to refund the cost. It just goes to show that the Algonquin Park "Community" is a group of great people that share a passion for backcountry adventure.
