How about the distant campsite is the southern most of the group of three on the west shore of Lake Travers near the bigger island.

Believe Maps by Jeff for the length of this portage, not the FOA map.
On average the portage is pretty good, an old road through the bush. Not quite as good at the Coveo Lake end but still pretty easy.
There is minimal access to the river along the portage. 2 or 3 spots along its almost 5 km length.

I usually delay any upstream travel to Whitson until after July 1.

Hi Jim
A very nice write up and description of what must have been a fun hike. Now, if I were just a little younger ...
With respect to the historic maps. Diana and I are currently hosting (and anticipate continuing to host) this collection of maps. However, all credit for assembling this collection belongs to Jeffrey McMurtrie. We took it over when it was clear that it would no longer be available at the old algonquinmap site. While I have not discussed this with Jeffrey, perhaps he might be interested in hosting this repository at at sometime in the future. (I had always assumed that Jeffrey would get back in the game).

My question would be: is it even deep? If so, where? But I've never seen a depth map or sounded it.

Never worried about it. Never had an issue. Like Barry, I leap frog.

The forest from St Andrews to Rouge is so open that you could jog through it without ever stepping foot on the rail bed.
Except that they are on opposite side of the rail bed.

Another most interesting and intriguing trip report.

It is. But that's not BETWEEN High Falls Pond and High Falls Lake. It's upstream of that. This photo was taken from within a few tens of meters -- at most -- from where Shayne's photo was taken but the view is in the opposite direction. My photo was taken in May; I suspect Shayne's was somewhat later in the year when this channel -- the channel between St. Andrews Lake and High Falls Lake -- is usually essentially dry.
You're up Peek.

Shayne needs to take a closer look.
(I changed "no" to "not" in my previous post).

I'll let you guys fight it out. Algonquin Lakes was first but not quite correct while Peek was exactly correct.

Somewhat farther north than all of the guesses so far (and I say that without checking a map to ensure that I'm right).

I hope everyone on aa is having (or had) a great holiday.
So where is this short portage? (Sorry about the exposure issues at the top of this photo.)
