This is similar to what yellowcanoe wrote. I used to maintain a section of the Finger Lakes Trail in Western New York State. Occasionally, I worked with crews that put up new lean-tos along the trail. As part of these projects we would install a fire pit ring. These rings had three legs on them. As I remember they were somewhere between 12 and 18 inches long. We would dig a pit deep enough so the bottom of the ring was flush with the ground. Then we would mix up some Quick-crete and pour it into the pit enough to secure the legs. It could not be moved once it cured. This is probably an expensive proposition but it would solve the problem of moving the pit.

Rich,

Thanks for that info. That's exactly the loop I was referring to. I haven't been in the Algonquin area since just before Covid and have been relying on my old maps. It's disappointing to hear that  section has been decommissioned. Although, I appreciate having the information now rather than after doing some serious planning. I'll take a look at your suggestion about going up to Loft Lake. But, it may be a good idea to get up to date maps first.

Thanks again for the reply.

I have backpacked a major portion of the Western Uplands Trail. Bad weather forced a detour on one of my last trips so there is a portion that I haven't been on and for the sake of it would like to complete. It's the 15.8 km loop to the west of Rainbow Lake. I was looking at my options of doing the whole thing on foot but it would probably take me 4 days of hiking. I would prefer to do it over 3. Based on the Canoe Routes map it looks like Rainbow Lake is pretty easy access if I approach from Canoe Lake. I'd have a portage of about 1.5 miles but other than that I'm not seeing a problem. I'd be using a Hemlock solo canoe that weighs about 28 pounds. I'd paddle in on day 1, hike the entire loop on day 2, and paddle out on day 3.

Has anyone done this trip? If so, any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks.

About 10 years ago two of us were on the Western Uplands trail and had stopped for a rest. We were sitting against a tree right on the trail when I heard something and looked to my left. It was a big bull moose standing there looking at us. It was late September. My buddy lives near the park and I asked him if I should be afraid and he said no. He wasn't convincing but what could I do. I managed a few pictures. He walked by us at about 20 feet. At one point he stopped, looked directly at me, and shook like a dog does to shed water. I thought I was doomed. Thankfully, he then turned and walked off into the bush. Like trippythings said, it was both scary and exciting. Once is enough for me.

Martin - that was an interesting article. Living in the park is definitely possible. Nothing I'd like to try for an exteneded period. Reminds me of a book, Stranger in The Woods:The Extraordinary Story of the Last True Hermit. This guy lived in the woods in Maine for 27 years. One day he just parked his car and walked away.

Rats! I was afraid you guys would say that. Had hoped the water up there would be cooler and I could try out the new 3 wt. Guess I’ll have to wait a bit to use it. I also have an old fiberglass 6 wt I may bring along with the 5 wt. Bass it will be. Decided to rack up the canoe too.

Thanks for the input.

That’s a nice one!

I’ll be in the Huntsville area from Saturday the 18th until Thursday the 23rd. Any advice on where I could try my luck along the corridor in the Park? Won’t have my canoe this trip so will have to be near the road. Will have a 3 wt and 5 wt fly rod. Is the water cool enough to be looking for trout or should I be looking at bass?

Thanks

Satellite seems to be showing a lot of open water. Too late for me but hope the park allows access soon. Should not have to wait until Friday. Happy paddling/fishing/hiking everyone!

I, and I’m sure others, appreciate the eyes-on reports that are being posted here. I can read the weather forecasts and check the park website but it’s the guys on the ground that tell what’s really going on in and around the park. Will keep checking back to see what you guys are seeing. Thanks!

Really interesting stuff. Never heard about the P.O.W. camp. Reading material while we wait for the ice to go.

I’ve been watching Simcoe. Have heard it’s usually out about two weeks before Opeongo. Still looks pretty white on the satellite images.

Sounds like Env Canada is following after the forecasters down here in the States. If they expect between 3 and 15 inches of snow they go into hyper mode and tell everyone to get ready for a major storm. Then we get an inch. Drives me crazy.

Anybody know anything about fishing Rain Lake? If the roads are open and I can get in I’ll be up there May 5-7. Just got into fly fishing and thought I might try it out.

Wondering when the roads to Rain Lake will be passable. Checked the Algonquin website but it doesn’t list any advisories or closures for that area. Don’t imagine they can be travelled yet. South of the border we’ve been getting days a little above freezing and cold nights. Everything is melting slowly and steadily
Hoping it’s the same up north.

I’ll go with May 3 for ice out. Hoping for sooner but don’t expect to get up there until then for first put in of the season. Thinking about a trip on Smoke Lake. Would expect it would be open sooner than Opeongo.
