I use frog toggs for backpacking trips for the last few years and they have held up pretty great, no holes yet!!! For kayaking and canoeing I use level six paddling tops and pants, heavier weight but do a great job keeping us dry and warm.

Hey gopenguins the access for the canyon can be from Grand lake at Achray, from Brigham lake,or paddle up River from Squirrel Rapids. When reserving use Grand Lack/Achray #22. As for seeing the canyon by foot there is the Barron canyon trail that is about 1 km long and access from Barron canyon road near kilometre 29. There are many different lakes to stay at when doing the canyon route but the one I use is start at Achray and end at squirrel depot, stay first night on St. Andrews or high falls lake or opalescent lake the second night in the lower canyon. You can mix it up depending on how much ground you want to cover in a day. We usually do it in a weekend but can be longer if you have a slower pace. You will have to arrange a car shuttle from Achray or drop a second vehicle at Squirrel Rapids.

On the east side with access via Achray is the Barron canyon route, nice two or three day trip depending on how much water you want to cover in a day. Only big lake is Grand at the put in but your not on it for long, maybe 20 minutes or so then a paddle down Stratton of about an hour to the high falls area. If you get an early start you should have no problems with wind and waves on either. The rest of the route is small lakes and Barron river. If you don't want to do it as a one way trip ( you will have to arrange vehicle shuttle) you can turn around at the canyon and double back on up to Achray put in. I have done this trip at least twice every year and love it.

I bring a Bug shirt for on the portages if they are super crazy and Vicks vapor rub the rest of the time, it works great to keep them from biting, just lightly apply to exposed skin, way safer than using chemicals. Works for me and has for many years
