I live in Hamilton but work in Mississauga.  I've got a relatively short one you could borrow if you wanted.

It's the battery life that will keep InReach relevant (unfortunately). I don't know of a phone that will last a week+ on a charge.

I dunno, I can get 7-8 days with minimal usage out of mine.  I can also get a lot of power banks or solar for the cost of just 1 season of inReach.  Plus a phone affords the luxury of weather updates and any alerts we may need.

I've been waiting on this over Garmin or a PLB for years, glad to see it's finally coming.

Joe Lake it is.  This was actually for a wedding, so the grandparents were able to stay at Arowhon Lodge.  EGB is up!

Yeah, we went through there from the south and it was WAY easier.  Nobody likes the schwack from the north.

THAT is a very good clue.

It is the island site on Linda, if I'm not mistaken.

Looks like a fun loop!
I would (and have) skip right past Timberwolf in favor of staying at Misty or McIntosh coming from Grassy Bay, but there's nothing wrong with Timberwolf.  It's just nestled right between two very pretty lakes with great sites.

I'd also either do two nights at either Timberwolf/Misty or push through to Daisy instead of staying on Little Misty.  It's such a meh site with a meh view, and doesn't get you significantly closer or farther from the take out.

Good chance of moose on every step of that route.  There's lakers to be found in certain lakes.

Just my 2 cents.

Wow!  Crazy to see how localized all this damage is.  Nature must have really not liked that park in particular.

No it's not legal. Increasingly people are bikepacking the old rail lines and other roads through the park. Too bad the park has no vision for this. There's an awesome video of Steve Evans Bike Packing the 'Meanest Link'. Great video https://youtu.be/B0j53jrHmKo?si=0oEt35aLtPhoWJyx

I've thought this for a while now. The park is definitely not cashing in on this market. Ive seen a few videos of the rail bed rides as well as the measnest link. What a slogg that must have bean. I'd love to see more access opened up to wilderness backpacking.

The issue is logging right?  If they open up more areas to bikepacking or backpacking, then your run more risk of people getting smoked by logging trucks, criticism of how carved out the Park is outside of the lakes, and lost income from forestry in areas that are newly packing areas.

I'm not saying I don't want to see more of the park and love the idea of a bikepacking loop being set up, but the economics and optics aren't there when there's so many other options in Ontario.  Even within a 1hr drive of many park boundaries.

I've done all these portages recently over 2 different trips.

The portages to Burnt Island are basically highways and fairly easily done with a cart.  Here's a brief clip of Burnt Island to Baby Joe so you have a frame of reference.

You'd definitely not get a cart through Burnt Island to Iris easier than carrying it, that portage sucks.  Same goes for Iris to Linda, and all the other portages to Source.  There's a good number of short boardwalk sections over mud/gloop that wouldn't be conductive to carting.

That being said, Linda -> Owl was really nice and packed down.  You might be able to get a little cart through there.  This picture is about as good as it gets in that area.

If they're hell-bent on paddling solo with a double-sided paddle, maybe try to convince him to rent a solo pack boat or something?  Or just plan on 2x portaging the kayak with a person on each end?  It's definitely do-able to carry a kayak, just kinda sucks.
