Thanks for posting your trip report. Do you happen to know what site number you had on Little Doe?

To bad the industry types here in Ontario can't organize something like Canoecopia in Madison WI.

I find he OAS is now mostly a travel show now.

I will guess April 16th.

Also I am boldly predicting a much drier summer than last year. (or is this just wishful thinking?) After my first tripping experience to Linda Lake last summer where the portages were 85-90% mud paths, I'd like to avoid the worries of losing footwear on portages that would otherwise be a nice walk in the park.

Does hydrogen peroxide work well? My neighbour leaves his trash bins and compost bins outside and now resorts to live trapping his attracted unwelcome guests. Last week he had a skunk in the trap, so no I am afraid that my dog will chase after a visiting skunk and possibly need a similar peroxide treatment.

Will the Bushbuddy be a viable stove during a fire ban?

After 2 nights on Linda Lake last week, I would say the ankle biting stable flies were the worst part. The mosquitoes were hungry on the portages, and the blackflies were still around as well, but bearable.

Thanks Trippy. Yes it was your help that made me pick Linda Lake for a beginner trip. It's been decades since I have been tripping in Algonquin as a teenager in scouts, so I am still a rookie. We are leaving early to try get the island site. We were the only reservation on the Tuesday with someone being on the lake Monday. I hope they have the island and are leaving Tuesday, giving us the island as it would be best with a dog. Now there are others on the lake to compete with, but we will get one of the others you mentioned.

Based on recommendations from this forum, my wife, dog and myself will be making our first ever overnight canoe trip to Linda Lake next week. Initially we had the lake to ourselves as we were the only reservation for the lake. As of today there are 2 of 3 booked. On the off chance the island site is occupied, what are your choices for an alternate site? PCI has #1 the island site and #3 listed.  3 does not seem great, but I am sure it would do. Does anyone know what are 2 and 4 like?

Thanks,

Steve

Spoke with the people at the permit office on Canoe lake while attending the 150 for 150 event June 25th. Initially I was asking about extending our trip by an extra day. First person said the system there would not allow her to do that, and I would need phone or do it online.  After the other person freed up, I spoke with her asking about an early departure and getting the permit early.  She wrote down my info and would pass it along to the people that would be on duty the evening before we are departing early so we could get our permit then.

No Algonquin trips yet, but Killarney in early September and at the end of September for my wife and I. Was lucky enough to get reservations on the coveted OSA for both trips.

I use pieces of pipe foam insulation on the gunwales where it is in contact with the crossbars. I find this helps prevent the canoe from sliding and protects the gunwale as well. They are cheap, about a loonie a length at Canadian Tire. They do wear out from the compression of strapping, but spares take up very little space in vehicle.

But just wanted to mention Linda Lake is a great lake, one of my favourites, with one of my favourite campsites. Here's a trip report of mine: http://www.myccr.com/phpbbforum/viewtopic.php?f=108&t=45348, and you can find the campsites on the campsite inventory as well: http://www.algonquinadventures.com/PCI/PCIindex.htm

Based on your trip report and recommendation this past winter in the Trip Planning section, I booked 2 nights on Linda for us this July. It will be a great reintroduction for back country camping for me after a few decades and a first for my wife.
We are already trying to plan another 2 night trip into Algonquin late September.

My wife and I are booked on Linda Lake in July, and we are staying at Canisbay Lake for two nights prior to departing from the Source Lake put in. I assume the closest permit office is Canoe Lake for this launch location. Can we get the permit the afternoon before so we can head out bright and early on the first day we have reserved?

You should look into Source --> Linda

- you get all the benefits of it being on Hwy 60 (close to Toronto, if you're coming from there.. plenty choices for outfitters, etc.)

- if you do single carries, it's about 3k split into 4 portages, all of which are pretty flat/easy. Travel time is only 3hrs to Linda lake

- avoids large lakes, so mid-day wind isn't as big of an issue (great for first timers)

- 2 out of 4 campsites on the lake are great (the island is a personal favourite), and they only reserve 3... so 2/3 chance of getting something good

- perfect route for a 'there and back' 2 nighter

- exposure both east and west, with lots of flat rocks. 10/10 for sunrise, sunset, stargazing, and swimming

edit: and one more, it's great for privacy! The island and eastern site are far enough away from the others on the lake, and the firepit at the island actually faces northwest, so you're not bothered by any passing traffic.

I might use this trip idea this summer with my wife and dog.  We are beginner trippers and will be car camping at Canisbay for a week and want to do 2 nights interior.

Thanks,
