You could also try the Oxtongue R. for Brook Trout. I would put in at Pine Landing and paddle up to Whisky Rapids. Then Portage into Westard and try your luck.

I've been skunked on all the stocked lakes along the corridor.

That's Greg Betteridge and he can catch trout if there are trout.His technique is unstoppable.

May i ask which brand of hip waders your son chose?  And which outfitter you chose? Thanks!
 

There is only one outfitter who services the Sutton river and that is Hearst Air. I can't remember the make of his waders sorry. I will do the trip again someday but not the whole river. Who knew catching trophy brook trout all day long could get boring.
 

For my canoe trip down the Sutton to Hudsons Bay last summer I bought four of these for my son and I because
they packed down nice for flying and were cheap if they got broken it wouldn't be that big of a deal.

I've never encountered one in the park but I've come literally face to face with one in Labrador. I decided it would be easier to climb this embankment http://www.erichall.eu/images/1010/1010486.jpg   on the East Branch of the Wilson river than wade against the current under the bridge. There was a large blueberry patch on the other side of the road and a big boar(that's how close I was) heard me scrambling up the rocks. He peaked over the edge just as my head came to road level. Our faces were maybe 2 ft away from each other. We both took off in opposite direction but he moved faster (hence my ability to identify the bears sex). Also once my buddy and I were making camp on a trip down the Kowkash River in NW ontario and had 4 different bears wander into our camp before we could even get the tent set up. Our solution was to drink copius amounts of vodka and river water so oif we had a nasty encounter we at least wouldn't feel anything. I'm happy that this summer the only polar bears I saw(you have to be armed on this trip for protection) were as our plane took off and then we saw 6.

399- My speckled senses are tingling now can't wait for next week.

Check out these guys I seen on Pimisi Lake yesterday. The first portage of the Mattawa River is on the far shore just slightly to the right of the photo. That's where they were headed. Funny thing is I know they weren't the first people to run the entire Mattawa this Spring. Bill Steer ran the River from Pimisi to Mattawa on May 1st.
There were also around 10-12 kayakers playing in the Amable Du Fond yesterday, beside Highway 630 around the snowmobile trail crossing.

I can remember doing stuff like this in the park back in the 80's when we would get our pemits regardless for opening week.
