Summer time? Keen sandals. Ice out? Keen sandals. Mid/late fall? Keen sandals. I ALWAYS have a pair of dry camp shoes with dry socks. Shoulder season, usually running shoes. Summer, flip-flops or similar.

My turn to ask for a bug update...? Going in July 18th with my boys for 5 nights - Hanging out on Daisy and Ralph Bice...Looking forward to frisbee golf, swimming, fires and hopefully fish! But not looking forward to too many bugs...

All - I just wanted to send this out to the ether in the event I have missed anything important. My Thing 1 needs a sleeping bag and he will be taking to a 3.5 week seep away camp in Northern(ish) Ontario during which time he will participate in a 5 day canoe trip. All our bags are down - however 11 year olds are not known for their attention to detail and if it rains/is generally just wet, I worry he will soak the bag and thus might as well not even have it. therefore I want to pick him up a synthetic bag - any recommendations other than the standard SAIL/MEC standards?

Was looking for tips on pizza sauce - I did not know it could come in a squeeze tube! I always bring a can (I know, I know...but I religiously pack it out...after burning out the inside...) and I was hoping someone could point me to a freeze dried option. I don't have a freeze dryer myself...

DO NOT USE SALT IN THIS RECIPE, IT WILL KILL THE YEAST
2 cups flower +bit extra to cover hands and if necessary, a bit to roll ball of dough in if it is sticky
1 small tablespoon yeast (quick rise yeast from a jar is fine)
1 tbs sugar
mix together before trip in ziplock.
3/4 cup lukewarm water and 1/4 cup oil about 2 hours before you wanna eat. Longer if weather is cool, (below 18 celsius).
I use my largest pot to mix the dough into a ball and knead untill elastic , 10 minutes or so. Dough should no longer stick to pot or hands.Will take about 2 hours to rise if weather is warm. Put ball of though in xl size ziplock, or other container untill doubled.
Use non stick frying pan or outback oven pan. Split ball in half and use to make 1 pizza bottom, squeezing dough around pan and up the sides like pie shells. add pizza sauce( i bring smallest squeeze bottle available from grocery store), cheese, real or parmesan, thinly sliced pepperette (the ones that dont need refridgeration) or whatever toppings you like.
set over hot coals on grill rack of fire pit, or, if using stove (i have a peak one that can simmer) you must use a spacer/diffuser (outback ovens come with one), between the flame and bottom of your pan. Cover pans with either a lid or foil, or the hood if you have the outback oven.
Bake untill golden, about 20 minutes.
take out and put on plate, too hot to eat anyway. Gives you just enough time to prepare pizza two and get it going. before digging into pizza 1.
you can compare bottom of pizza to thick crust pizza. these babes are no thin crusts!

Thermarest, thermsarest, thermarest. The extra 50 bucks is worth it - the mattress works beautifully and lasts and lasts and lasts...I have said this before on the forum - I have had one for 20 years and I bought it used at a gear exchange from a woman who did a cross country bike ride from Halifax to Vancouver...and back (yikes!)!! The thing is still going strong.

I would say you'd need a boat with WAY more room than that...16' is pretty cramped. When our family of 4 go (two grownups, 1 x 11 yr. old and 1 x 8yr old) we use a 19.5' boat (rental) and even then it takes some navigating inside the boat. Quite honestly, I think we are at our end of all 4 going in one boat, the boys are just too big now. Good thing Thing 1 is almost a capable sterner (sans wind) as we'll be going out in two boats soon.
It sounds like you want to buy - have you considered renting for the trips you do?? I have been doing 3-4 trips per year and I have pretty much decided renting is the best for me (unless I want to go solo). The drive with the boat on my car reduces my fuel economy by more than 1/3, plus I have to store it and look after it, not to mention the initial outlay of cash. No doubt it costs more in the long run my way, but I can do a lot of rentals for the price of a SR Quetico 19.5...!

This is a piece of kit I would NEVER go camping without. Worth every penny.
I have two thermarests - I bought one used (a "luxury series" for $50) 18 years ago and it still works beautifully. I bought a second one of this brand (a regular one) and it too works really well.
I picked up two MEC brand ones about 4 years ago - my kids use these and they have never complained. They seem to work well - I worry about them though, because the fabric and overall construction seems lower calibre. That said, they fold/roll up better than the thermarest IMO - If I were to buy another one, I would still go with the thermarest. I find to roll them tight enough, you have to deflate them, close the valve, unroll and quickly and roll them up, while still keeping the roll tight as considerable air will infiltrate quickly. The mattress needs to be topped up once it expands (I like mine super taught).
I have no experience with any other brands.
I think one key to the longevity is taking care of them - we keep them unrolled, with the valve open when not in use. A good place to store them is under the bed...This was the advice I was given when I bought the first used one and I followed. Seems to work!

I haven't watched any episodes, but I jumped right in on Day 7 - just did that exact route last spring. I highly recommend Maple Cr. just after ice out - the falls along the portage are really spectacular.
This episode was great! I'll totally check out the others now. Looks like they set the tarp up pretty much over the fire pit - anyone els do this?? I am always afraid the tarp will melt....And I really dislike mayo.

I was May 5th, but I am pretty sure this is too optimistic - because of work, our trip was adjusted to May 20th, so I think we'll be good for then!
