I have never done this trail in the winter, but when I went in April this past year shortly after early ice-out was announced, I believe I was the only one on the whole trail for three days (bliss!). Based on how booked up the trail typically is, I was surprised. If memory serves, I didn't see too much evidence of winter camping near the lookout point, aside from maybe the remnants of one or two fires in the vicinity.  I assume that it does not get much winter camping usage in that spot. There's a great open area to setup camp a very short distance away from the actual lookout. I would think the trail can be travelled in either direction without issue, but again I have only done this (in different directions) in non-winter months. As for water supply, the Madawaska west of the lookout would be a safe bet as it's quick flowing/cascading here. I'm not confident of any other areas as I seem to recall other creeks and streams to be narrow and slow moving. Maybe someone else with more experience can chime in?
Hope this helps, for what it's worth...
Cheers,
Rich

Great read Bo!

Sorry to hear that your plans didn't work out as hoped, but it sounds like there were some good points during your outing plus great tales about MR WIND and an insane storm to regale your audience with. If it's the same storm I'm remembering, I actually had the thought "wow, I wouldn't want to be out camping right about now." Kudos for making the most of it.
As for the key fob incident, I can also relate as it happened to me on a backpacking trip. I knew I had it with me, tucked in a package of tissues, but couldn't find it when we were at our site. I figured (well, hoped) that it must have somehow fallen out of the hood of my pack during our lunch stop about 3 km back over some tough terrain. I was just about to make a round trip back there when something white was spotted under the low firepit bench - yup, the pack of tissues with the fob somehow wedged its way there! Huge relief after a great panic.

Cheers!

So I pulled the trigger on the Stihl MS 194 T Aborist, I mentioned earlier in this thread, for this winter in Algonquin. Super easy to use and manage with one hand if necessary. It weighs about 7lbs, but really doesn't feel like it. I think I'll install the bar upside down too and start a trend

Glad to hear you're having good luck with your Stihl. I had been a loyal Stihl owner for about 15 years. But now my Stihl chainsaw tends to either cooperate or jam up and try to rip my arm off when I try to start it (it doesn't have many hours on it and I clean it religiously). My most recent Stihl purchase (a gas trimmer) has been a supreme exercise in frustration - it randomly bogs down and cuts out on me certain times that I use it. I have brought it back three times and told 'it's good now, nothing wrong with it', only to have it repeat the same thing. I have emailed Stihl about the issue but they did not respond. Zero customer service. Based on what I've heard from others, I am now going to switch to Echo (or maybe Husq). Sorry to be a downer, I'm just really upset with having spent $600 on something that runs worse than a $150 unit. Never again.

Amazing shot! I have a similar one from Susan Lake so I will guess ‘Susan’, despite being reasonably confident that this is incorrect 😁

The potages from Erables to Nadine are work.  When I last did that area, I did Erables to Little Osler then Little Osler to Nadine.

In terms of which direction, counterclockwise you get the benefit of the Nip's current but you'll likely have to deal with the prevailing winds from Cedar to Kiosk in your face the whole way.  You could get lucky though.

Love that area of the park.

Agree 100% - amazing area! We covered this route as part of an epic trip, also staying on Erables, Little Osler, and Nadine (with an awesome rest day on Nadine). IMHO, going from Erables to Nadine in one day would be a really tough grind, especially so when factoring in double carries and shorter daylight in September.

We canoed/portaged through there in August of 2021 and had no issues whatsoever. From what I remember, you could pretty much see a water path through the weeds, likely amplified by other trippers.

Kind of reminds me of a site on Lauder?
...missed the 'very very close' comment, but I will keep this guess anyway

Corbeau Lake is north of North River Lake straddling the park boundary, but where is West Corbeau?

If you travel straight up Cedar and through Hurdman Lake, a series of small waterways and portages gets you to West Corbeau. We found it to be an interesting (and very quiet) part of the park.

You got it! The lake itself isn’t bad, but unless you sleep in a hammock I have no idea how you could overnight here.

There are two entrances to this lake, one of which really requires using the brain.

This one was taken from a campsite quite north of 60 in 2020. We had to hunt for the firepit and benches which were swallowed by the vegetation shown in the photo. Aptly labelled 'Terribly Overgrown Campsite' on Maps by Jeff. Fortunately, we were just exploring the area and had not actually booked the site. My apologies for the photo orientation - my tech skills are not improving with age....
