Ice Out predictions?

I'm booked to be on trip May 2, but this real winter we've been given has me wondering if the park will declare ice out by then.

Let's hear those predictions!

Re: Ice Out predictions?

They’re allowing early May bookings this year? For the last few years they’ve been playing it safe and not allowing anything to be booked before mid-May.

It’s been a long, cold, snowy winter (and it’s been awesome) so my completely unscientific guess is that it’s going to be a consistently warm and early spring. We’ll be camping before April ends - and the water levels are going to be insane.

Re: Ice Out predictions?

Significant good ice on the lakes east of the park. It’s made for great ice fishing this year. End of April I’m guessing but wouldn’t surprise me if we’re into May. Supposed to get rain this week but then turn cold again so will only help it.

Re: Ice Out predictions?

i was booked may 7th ,, i cancelled on feb 18th ,,  i still paid out $ 15 bucks to cancel,,  someone is making money .
the ice will be late sinking this spring ,, and the roads will need to be groomed at some access points.
hurry up and wait,,
algonquin will open when opie is clear ,, this has been the past practice the last several years,, at least

Re: Ice Out predictions?

Ice out this year sure seems like it has a “later” vibe to it.  I just got back from some hot tent camping at Mew and it’s very much winter still with a lot of snow.
But who knows March might exit like a lamb..

Re: Ice Out predictions?

I booked for May 2-5.  Really hope that pans out because it's my best window until mid-summer...
Asking for a friend, but how long would Ope take to chop out with a standard axe?

Re: Ice Out predictions?

My ice out guess for is is Apr 24.

Last year started my season with Mew Lake as a base & day trips for fishing, Victoria Day week. Black flies had become a nuisance later in the week. Wanted to go a bit earlier this year to avoid black flies, booked similar trip this year for May 5th.

Re: Ice Out predictions?

If it makes you feel better, there was 23" of solid ice on the local lake yesterday. I'm hoping for mid May if we are lucky.

Re: Ice Out predictions?

May 8. Which lets them open the Park on the 9th and me leave on my trip on the 12th.

Re: Ice Out predictions?

Latest ice out date in the last 60 years is May 15. I think the mild winters we have had recently has messed up our perception of winter used to be like... As in this winter can't be anything close to the worst winter in the last 60 years...

Ice out better not be mid May! I have a cabin fever affliction that needs its fix!

You're not alone! Can't wait to get into the park. The long bug free days of early spring are the best!

Re: Ice Out predictions?

Ice melt is the first step…
…predictions on the access roads?

Seems like there is usually a delay for an access point or two (or three) while they try to repair the roads. Lots of snow this year equals lots melting run off… maybe equals lots of wash-out spots?

Predictions?

(My first trip goes in at Tim River… so my own fingers are crossed for  one.., its been 5-6 years since i started there and don't remember much about the road)

This one has had some wash out before, and the end of the road right at the Tim has been a massive puddle before. Not ideal, but at least you might be able to still use the Magnetawan access to start your trip? the road in there is a little better.
We have had to switch these two access points in the past.
