Don't need a boat.  I built my own or you can buy this apparatus that allows you to put a 5hp motor on the side of your canoe.  Once across Opeongo or any big lake, I just stash the motor and apparatus in the woods until my return.

I’d be very curious about this apparatus sir. Can you share the details of where I can find it?

Cheers!

Pen is a viable option for catching trout in May.  You also have the option of going on a day trip to Welcome, Harry and Rence which too are speck lakes.

I know you have visited there countless times and are an avid fisherman so I was hoping you’d chime in! Thank you sir.

I know technically there is trout and I assumed with Oen being a decent sized lake the fishing would be fine but wasn’t sure. Here’s to hoping!

Well I missed the update that they were opening for bookings starting May 3 so I didn’t get to book the lake I wanted.

So I am wondering (without any specifics ofcourse) if it is worth a trip to Pen for spring trout? Or am I wasting my time?

For some reason my PMs are acting up so if anyone wants to reply privately we can email.

Cheers!

I used Algonquin Outfitters 5yrs ago, last minute decision due to windy weather.  With my sister & kids & dogs, there was not enough muscle to deal with strong winds, knew that right away on the dock at Opeongo.  Since then my sister has rented a couple of times after that, forever spoiled after the water taxi experience....  All the times AO did not charge extra for the dogs (2).

However, after my first booking I have done something different that maybe you may want to consider.  I bought a 10ft inflatable (zodiac style) & 5hp outboard motor & I tow a kayak out behind for quiet paddling time (or could do canoe as well). At $200+ minimum for round trip water taxi, I figured my breakeven would happen in about 7 trips (considering if I could sell boat/motor for 50% of purchase price), after 7 trips I'm ahead.  Inflatable boat solved problem of where I'm going to store a boat & once you have it you end up using it more often as well.  Have used it several times on Opeongo, Kiosk & Lake Travers. After 4 yrs, I'm definitely ahead on owning vs renting costs. Owning your boat also gives you more options to lakes that don't have water taxi. And if you don't have a lot of muscle (young kids, older parents/family members, dogs...) You also have the use of the boat daily for the duration of your trip, not just pickup & dropoff.   You also are on your own schedule, much more flexibility, don't need to book water taxi time & make sure that you are ready at both pickup & drop off times.

Thanks Barbara!

And this is a great idea!!

Thanks @OTCanadienne and @boknows for the responses.

I agree it’s expensive! I’ve paddle OP many times but won’t with my 6 year old daughters haha

There are 3 dads, 4 daughters and 3 dogs. It’s an annual Daddy-Daughter trip I do with a couple of my longest running portage friends. My girls are the youngest and while the last 2-3 years we’ve done a paddle in with usually 1-3 portages, I think us dads are looking for an easy trip in and then explore from there!

Good day all!

Been a while since I’ve used the taxi but want to do a nice easy trip to the east arm with my daughters and 2 dogs. Last time I used the taxi service, dogs were fine on the the taxi, is that still the case? And do they count as a person when I’m booking? Haha

Appreciate any insight!

Cheers!

Came out Sat. Bugs are fine. Better than expected for very early July. Going in next week again will likely just bring a small head net and 1 can of spray.

Thanks Shawn!

Thats what I like to hear! Probably just do the same then

Trip Planning » Print Permits or pick up in Person » 7/06/2020 12:17 pm

Thanks for the info everyone!

Nice to know I can get out early. I know we all believe this is the way it should be with preprinted permits but would be nice if they had a checkin button the day before/of so they know you went, especially in busy times where it could open up a campsite for day of reservations.

Aw well, Ill get my wife to call Friday morning and tell them I am out there!

Trip Planning » Print Permits or pick up in Person » 7/06/2020 10:03 am

Hey Everyone!

Been trying to find an answer to this. I know my first trip on June 4th I just printed the permit at home (actually just printed confirmation email twice and left one on my dash as I couldnt find where to print the permit) but I am not sure if thats changed and we now have to stop in at a permit office for backcountry permits?

Hope everyone is staying safe and finding ways to enjoy the summer so far!

Cheers!

Sell and Swap » Werner Kalliste Paddle » 3/14/2020 2:51 pm

Hey Everyone!

I have a brand new Werner Kalliste 250cm 2 piece straight shaft kayak paddle. I bought it for my solo pack boat but need a different size and because it has touched water its technically used but there isn't a mark on it.

If anyone is interested please let me know and I can send some pictures.

Cheers!

Uppa I feel your frustration. It seems to be the pattern every year now: an initial delay that seems reasonable and then a second delay that seems like an overreaction.

Atleast this year they are admitting it was pre-emptive and leaving the door open for an earlier ice out.

I atleast have faith in that otherwise I am not sure why they would make that tweet 24hrs after announcing an added five day delay...that seems very odd if they dont plan on opening earlier as I am quite certain the water taxi will be able to get up Opeongo by Saturday afternoon after today and tomorrows wind and rain.

Geez now my email and guy on the phone at Ontario Parks says all backcountry is delayed till the 15th...

After the wind and rain tomorrow and warm temps Saturday/Sunday you will definitely be fine for the 15th.

Geez in 18 years I don't think I've ever seen Lake Nippissing ice out this long before Algonquin...crazy
