Re: So when does the ice-out prediction conversation start???

The best satellite image in days still has a good amount of cloud cover obscuring things, but plenty of lakes have gone from white to blue, and the remaining iced-in ones are all significantly darker. Good progress for sure!

Darn wispy clouds in the latest sat image (16:07 GMT) are blocking AP but Lake Nippising is completely ice free...maybe the next one in an hour will give us a little window through!

Nipissing and Trout Lake are free. Tried to get into Cedar Lake today but the road is still snowed in at the 12km or so mark.

how much snow would you estimate was still on the Brent Road?

1 foot I would say. But there were ruts going through it from pickups so it's probably gone now. I'll probably head that way on Wednesday.

I was up on the weekend, there is still a lot of ice.  I think it will be another week yet before the official ice out!  Here are some pictures....

Re: So when does the ice-out prediction conversation start???

If this week's forecast holds up I'd say there's still hope for this weekend.

Re: So when does the ice-out prediction conversation start???

Tried to get to Rain Lake road again today.. got passed the washout (I had to fix it up a bit for my small car) but the road is snowed in 3km before the access point..

I then tried to get into Magnetewan and its snowed in a few KM after the Tim River turn off, but pickups have been through.

Looking at the new Modis image today it looks like the ice is out on the East side? Grand, Stratton, Sec, etc?

Nice clear satellite image for today, showing good progress even from yesterday.

"Some Algonquin Park facilities, including the backcountry, are currently under a delayed opening[opening on April 28, 2017 (subject to change)]. Watch this webpage for updates in the hours ahead."

I DO NOT like the way that is worded.

But then again theres NO WAY they can delay the backcountry even further! I'm betting APP will be 75%++ ice free by tomorrow afternoon.

Re: So when does the ice-out prediction conversation start???

I'm not sure I'd go with "no way" after last year, we were camped at Rock Campground, paddling a wide open Pen on a Saturday, but I recall permits weren't issued until the following Tue/Wed?  Hopefully its more common sense this year, and the usable access points are open for this weekend (roads permitting) Grand area, Kiosk/Manitou/North Tea etc.

Here's hoping anyone with plans gets the green light for the weekend!!!

Re: So when does the ice-out prediction conversation start???

The Friends of Algonquin Park just reported today as "ice out" day! HAPPY CAMPING EVERYONE!!

-------------Official 2017 Ice Out Date Recorded for Algonquin Park — High winds and heavy rain caused Lake Opeongo, Algonquin Park's largest lake, to shed its ice cover today (April 25, 2017), just slightly earlier than the average ice out date of April 28 (1964 to 2016). Technically, the official ice out date for Algonquin Park is recorded when a boat can safely navigate from the Lake Opeongo Access Point to the Happy Isle Portage in the North Arm of Lake Opeongo. Ice out has ranged from as early as March 29 (2012) to as late as May 15 (1972). For more details see http://www.algonquinpark.on.ca/news/ice-out.php
